Konami’s Castlevania And Contra Coming To Modern Consoles

It’s Konami’s 50th birthday and the company is celebrating it with a bang. Konami has announced three new compilations based on its classic and early arcade games which will be released for modern consoles. These include Castlevania, Contra, and several arcade games. The compilations will be released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and via Steam for Windows PC.

Arcade Classics is the first collection which includes some of Konami’s hit games from the 1980s. The list features A-Jax, Haunted Castle, Gradius 2, Life Force, Scramble, Thunder Cross, and Twin Bee. It will go on sale through digital stores on April 18th for $20.

Contra: Anniversary Collection will be available in early summer this year. There will be eight titles in this compilation which include Contra and Super Contra for arcade, Super C for NES, and Contra 3: The Alien Wars for Super NES.

Finally, the Castlevania: Anniversary Collection will also be available with eight titles in early summer. The four that have been confirmed so far include Castlevania and Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse for NES, Castlevania 2: Belmont’s Revenge for Game Boy, and Super Castlevania 4 for Super NES.

All of these collections will also have a digital book with behind-the-scene notes, design sketches that have never been released before, and interviews with the people involved in the development of these titles.

Oculus Rift S Unveiled, Arriving This Spring For $399

There were reports recently that Facebook-owned Oculus might launch a new virtual reality headset and it has done just that today. The company announced its Oculus Rift S virtual reality headset at the Game Developers Conference today. The new headset costs $399 and will be available for purchase this spring.

The price tag gets a $50 increase compared to the headset’s predecessor. Some improvements have obviously been made. They include enhanced resolution as well as the same integrated audio system that’s present on the Quest. The OLED panels in the Oculus Rift S provide 1280×1440 resolution but the refresh rate is going down from 90Hz to 80z.

According to reports, the field of view on this new headset is slightly larger than the earlier model as well. Much like the Oculus Quest, the Oculus Rift S will come with Touch controllers out of the box. It features five tracking cameras as well so users can look at their surroundings without having to take the headset off through a feature called Passthrough+.

Oculus says that it worked with Lenovo on the redesign for this headset which has helped improve comfort, light blocking, and weight distribution. As always, a PC capable enough to power the virtual reality headset will still be required.

Xbox Boss Promises To ‘Go Big’ At E3 Following Google’s Stadia Reveal

Google finally unveiled its much-awaited game streaming service called Stadia yesterday at the Game Developers Conference. Lots of people paid attention to what it unveiled and it appears that Microsoft’s Xbox boss Phil Spencer was one of them. An internal email sent by him following the event has surfaced online which promises employees that Microsoft will “go big” at E3 with its own gaming announcements.

Stadia is not a new console or set-top box for gaming from Google. It’s a completely cloud-based game streaming service which will enable players to stream titles at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second in Chrome browsers, Chromecast, and on Pixel smartphones.

Microsoft has been working on a game streaming service of its own. It recently demonstrated gameplay powered by the Project xCloud service in public. The company will obviously have more to share about the service at its E3 2019 press event.

“Google went big today and we have a couple of months until E3 when we will go big,” Spencer wrote in the internal email, adding that “Their announcement is validation of the path we embarked on two years ago.”

“We have the content, community, cloud team and strategy, and as I’ve been saying for a while, it’s all about execution. This is even more true today,” Spencer went on to say, reminding his team that Stadia won’t be the only major game streaming service on the market.
