The Razer Phone 3 Might Not Be Dead After All

Last month it was reported that Razer might have killed off their Razer Phone lineup. This was based on a report that revealed that Razer had laid off some members from its smartphone division. Razer did not fully confirm whether or not the Razer Phone was dead, but now a report from DigiTimes has revealed that maybe the Razer Phone 3 might not be dead after all.

According to DigiTimes, “Razer is likely to launch the third edition of its gaming handset, dubbed Razer 3, in 2019 despite reports indicating it has reduced the number of its Razer team members by 30 or 2%, as it moves to enhance the competitiveness of its gaming handset business, according to industry sources.”

Based on this report, not only is Razer planning on launching a third-generation of its handset, but could also be changing up the brand to “Razer 3”. At the moment not much is known about the third-gen Razer smartphone, but hopefully Razer has learnt from its previous two smartphones and address some of the problems that were highlighted.

While the phone’s 120Hz display is beautiful, the phone did feel like it was lacking in other areas, such as its camera. If the Razer Phone 3/Razer 3 does launch, then hopefully it will come with much better cameras. That being said, the Razer Phone 2 was launched in October 2018 which means that if the third-gen model comes along, it will probably be months until we actually learn more about it.

Markforged raises $82 million for its industrial 3D printers

3D printer manufacturer Markforged has raised another round of funding. Summit Partners is leading the $82 million Series D round with Matrix Partners, Microsoft’s Venture Arm, Next47 and Porsche SE also participating.

When you think about 3D printers, chances are you’re thinking about microwave-sized, plastic-focused 3D printers for hobbyists. Markforged is basically at the other end of the spectrum, focused on expensive 3D printers for industrial use cases.

In addition to increased precision, Markforged can manufacture parts in strong materials, such as carbon fiber, kevlar or stainless steel. And it can greatly impacts your manufacturing process.

For instance, you can prototype your next products with a Markforged printer. Instead of getting sample parts from third-party companies, you can manufacture your parts in house. If you’re not going to sell hundreds of thousands of products, you could even consider using Markforged to produce parts for your commercial products.

If you work in an industry that requires a ton of different parts but don’t need a lot of inventory, you could also consider using a 3D printer to manufacture parts whenever you need them.

Markforged has a full-stack approach and controls everything from the 3D printer, software and materials. Once you’re done designing your CAD 3D model, you can send it to your fleet of printers. The company’s application also lets you manage different versions of the same part and collaborate with other people.

According to the company’s website, Markforged has attracted 4,000 customers, such as Canon, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, General Motors, Volkswagen and Adidas. The company has shipped 2,500 printers in 2018.

With today’s funding round, the company plans to do more of the same — you can expect mass production printers and more materials in the future. Eventually, Markforged wants to make it cheaper to manufacture parts at scale instead of producing those parts through other means.

Disney’s Acquisition Of Fox Is Now Officially Complete

Last year it was reported that Disney’s acquisition of Fox was approved by regulators, meaning that it was well on its path to officially being completed. The good news for those who have been watching out for this, you’ll be pleased and very excited to learn that  Disney’s deal to acquire Fox is officially done.

According to Disney’s CEO Bob Iger, “This is an extraordinary and historic moment for us—one that will create significant long-term value for our company and our shareholders. Combining Disney’s and 21st Century Fox’s wealth of creative content and proven talent creates the preeminent global entertainment company, well positioned to lead in an incredibly dynamic and transformative era.”

This move turns Disney into quite a powerhouse when it comes to entertainment. More importantly, at least for fans of superhero movies, this means that certain franchises will finally be returning home to Marvel. This includes the likes of the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool. While Deadpool has done pretty well on its own, many are no doubt hoping for Marvel to reboot the X-Men and Fantastic Four movies and fold them into the MCU.

Unfortunately there is no telling when we will see that happen, especially with the Dark Phoenix movie having yet to be released, but we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled all the same.

Apple Pencil Can’t Charge Inductively With The New iPads

Apple recently launched some new iPad models. This included a 10.5-inch iPad Air and a 7.9-inch iPad mini. These are designed to be Apple’s new lower-end iPads, but despite that, they also came with support for the Apple Pencil which had more or less been an exclusive to the iPad Pro.

Unfortunately we should point out that there is a catch. According to a report from Daring Fireball’s John Gruber, it seems that the new iPads will not support inductive charging for the Apple Pencil. This was a new feature introduced to last year’s iPad Pros where the Apple Pencil could be attached to the frame of the iPad Pro to charge.

According to Gruber’s sources, apparently it seems that the inductive charging tech was too expensive to be included into the new iPads, or at least it was too expensive where it would have driven up the price of the tablet and thus ruining its position as a budget iPad. What this means is that if you want to use the Apple Pencil with the new entry-level iPads, you will need to get the first-gen Apple Pencil that comes with a Lightning plug for charging.

If you own the Apple Pencil 2, then you won’t be able to charge it using the iPad, so that’s something to take note of. In the meantime it seems that despite the somewhat familiar size of the iPad mini, it has been discovered that older cases might not work with it.

Apple Launches Initiative To Help Combat Fake News

Last year Apple announced that they acquired Texture, a “Netflix for magazines” so to speak. The acquisition is said to be part of a larger plan where Apple expects to launch their own news and magazine subscription service, and it seems that Apple could be trying to give its service more credibility.

The company has recently announced that they will be launching an initiative in the US and Europe where they are hoping to educate readers on how to spot fake news. According to Apple’s CEO Tim Cook, “News literacy is vital to sustaining a free press and thriving democracy, and we are proud to be collaborating with organizations on the front lines of this effort.”

He adds, “We’ve been impressed by the important work being done by the News Literacy Project, Common Sense and Osservatorio, empowering young people to be active and engaged citizens.” Apple isn’t alone in their efforts to try and detect and prevent fake news from spreading. In the past we’ve seen similar efforts by social media platforms such as Facebook where they would try to introduce additional information/sources to articles to give users better context.

Even WhatsApp has rolled out new features that will help users better identify fake news, and YouTube has also launched workshops where it will try to educate teens on how to spot fake news. Apple will be hosting an event on the 25th of March where we might finally be able to learn more about the company’s upcoming services.
