Right To Repair Bill Reintroduced In California

A right to repair bill has been reintroduced in California after an earlier effort to push similar legislation through failed last year. State lawmakers will once again debate promulgating right to repair legislation which will compel device manufacturers to provide tools, parts, repair manuals, and other materials to independent repair outlets and consumers interested in repairing their devices on their own.

California State Assembly member Susan Talamantes Eggman has announced the introduction of Assembly Bill 1163 which will mandate that manufacturers like Apple, for example, “make service literature and equipment or parts available to product owners and to regulated, independent repair shops.” California is thus the 20th state to propose right to repair legislation just this year. Lobbyists working on behalf of major tech companies were able to block last year’s effort.

“The Right to Repair will provide consumers with the freedom to have their electronic products and appliances fixed by a repair shop or service provider of their choice, creating a competitive market that will be cheaper for consumers and reduce the number of devices thrown in the trash,” Eggman said.

Apple is one of the companies that maintain strict control over repair policies, only allowing in-house and authorized third-party repair. It’s openly opposed to such legislation, arguing that making repair material public would reveal industry secrets while creating safety and security issues for its customers.

California residents can now reach out to their representatives to put their point of view forward, be it for or against the proposed legislation.

How the Chaos of Studying Subatomic Particles Inspired the Creation of the Web

MoviePass Unlimited Movie Plan Returns For $9.95

MoviePass shot to instant popularity because of its unlimited movie plan. The company eventually had to take it away as it faced financial troubles. It’s now bringing back the unlimited plan which allows subscribers to watch an unlimited number of 2D movies in return for a monthly fee.

The plan, MoviePass Uncapped, will normally be priced at $19.95 per month. However, the company is offering it for $9.95 per month for a limited time. Customers willing to pay for the full year via ACH payment will thus be paying what they would have with the original plan, $9.95 per month. Those who don’t want to make the commitment for the entire year can get it for $14.95 per month for a limited time.

Some might wonder why MoviePass is bringing back an unlimited plan when it caused the company so much pain to the point that it almost ran out of money. The company mentions in its announcement today that it’s ability to “combat violations” of the terms of use has improved, and that “MoviePass has the right to limit the selection of movies and/or the times of available movies should your individual use adversely impact MoviePass’s system-wide capacity or the availability of the Service for other subscribers.”

Subscribers will now be able to reserve tickets three hours before showtime and will have to check into the theater between 10 and 30 minutes before the show begins.

Next James Bond Aston Martin Could Be An Electric

James Bond, the man with a license to kill, is always seen going about on Her Majesty’s service in the latest Aston Martin sportscar. Some of the company’s most iconic vehicles have featured in 007 films and to reflect the changing times, we might see an electric Aston Martin in the next James Bond movie.

The Sun reports that Cary Joji Fukanaga, the director of the upcoming Bond movie, wants the secret agent to go about his business in an Aston Martin Rapide E, it’s an electric sports car from the manufacturer. The director reportedly doesn’t want to see Bond in a gas-powered coupe.

He’s apparently not alone in wanting to showcase this shift in the automobile industry in the next movie. Daniel Craig, the actor who currently plays Bond, is said to be onboard in addition to the producers. They feel that “the time was right” for James Bond to use a zero-emission vehicle.

Obviously it’s not set in stone so it can’t be said with absolute certainty that this is going to happen. Rest assured, no one will say that the Rapide E won’t be able to get 007 out of sticky situations quickly. It puts out the equivalent of 602 HP and boasts a top speed of 155 miles per hour.

Google Stadia Cloud Game Streaming Service Revealed

Google confirmed a few months ago that it was working on a game streaming service codenamed Project Stream. It has formally announced the service today at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. Google says that its Stadia cloud game streaming service is a platform meant for everyone and that it will stream games to all kinds of devices.

Stadia isn’t a console or set-top box. It leverages the power of Google’s massive cloud infrastructure to stream games to PCs, smartphones, tablets, and TVs. Stadia will be able to stream games to the Chrome browser, Chromecast, and Pixel smartphones. It will be launched in the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, and Canada later this year. Google demonstrated the service being used to play a game on a Chromebook and then picking it up on a phone before moving to a PC all in real time.

Stadia is capable of streaming games in 4K resolution with HDR at 60 frames per second. It will support resolutions of up to 8K in the future with frame rates of up to 120 fps. The demonstrations of titles running on this service included Doom Eternal and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

The service will enable players to access and play Stadia games literally in seconds. One demonstration involved a YouTube video of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey with a “Play” button which almost instantly fires up the game for real-time play. It’s that’s quick because players don’t have to download or install anything. The game essentially streams like a YouTube video would, though the underlying tech is much more complex.

It will be possible for players to use current USB controllers to play on a laptop or PC but Google is launching its own Stadia Controller as well. It will work with the service by connecting directly over Wi-Fi to link up with a game session in the cloud. There’s a dedicated button on there for the Assistant and one for capturing and sharing clips directly to YouTube.

The company has also set up its own game studio, Stadia Games and Entertainment, which will develop titles that will be exclusive to the service. The effort will be lead by Jade Raymond, an industry veteran who has previously worked at Ubisoft, Sony, and Electronic Arts.
