Livestreaming seemed like a good use of technology, where it allowed anyone to share footage live as it happens. This has aided so many people in a variety of fields, but unfortunately it also means that it is open to be abused, such as was the case with the recent shootings in New Zealand where the shooter livestreamed his attack.
So much so that according to a report from the Australian Financial Review (via Kotaku Australia), Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called for livestreaming to be suspended across all platforms due to tech companies’ inability to respond more effectively to such situations.
According to Morrison, “In the past, they have suspended this sort of Facebook live-streaming, and assurances were given that when it was put back up it could avoid this.” He adds, “There is very real discussions that have to be had about how these facilities and capabilities, as they exist on social media, can continue to be offered where there can’t be the assurances given at a technology level. Once these images get out there, it is very difficult to prevent them.”
In the wake of the shootings, Facebook had to play a game of whack-a-mole simply because people were uploading the footage despite it getting taken down. According to Facebook, after 24 hours they managed to remove 1.5 million videos.

Facebook has been taking some hits recently to their reputation, namely due to the privacy scandals that the social media platform has been embroiled in time after time. So much so that WhatsApp’s co-founder, Brian Acton, has called upon users to delete Facebook. This is according to a report from BuzzFeed News (via 9to5Mac) where Acton spoke to an undergraduate computer science class at Stanford University.
According to Acton, “To be brutally honest, the curated networks — the open networks — struggle to decide what’s hate speech and what’s not hate speech. … Apple struggles to decide what’s a good app and what’s a bad app. Google struggles with what’s a good website and what’s a bad website. These companies are not equipped to make these decisions.”
He adds, “And we give them the power. That’s the bad part. We buy their products. We sign up for these websites. Delete Facebook, right?” This isn’t the first time that people have called upon the public to delete Facebook. It is also not Acton’s first time calling on users to delete Facebook, but it sounds like he’s still pretty damn serious about it.
Of course whether or not users will remains to be seen as Facebook is quite integral to a lot of services on the internet, but without a doubt the company definitely needs to step up with regards to user privacy if they hope to keep their users around.

Do you fancy yourself being a Dota 2 expert? Do you think that you are able to predict how a match plays out before it ends? If you think that’s you, then you might be interested to learn that Valve has recently launched a new Dota app in the form of the Dota Pro Circuit app where it lets players make predictions in matches and be rewarded if they make the right call.
According to Valve, “You’ll be able to wager your personal stash of Plus Shards to predict the winners of DPC matches, with winnings added to your in-game total. The Fantasy Challenge offers the chance for more Shards, as you compete against your friends and the entire world to put together the best roster of pro players at each event.”
For those who are unfamiliar, Shards are an in-game currency used by Dota Plus members, and while it isn’t real-life money, it still feels very much like gambling and we’re not sure if regulators will be too thrilled about it (a few governments around the world are already quite unpleased with the concept of loot boxes).
Valve adds, “In addition, you’ll have access to a dynamic News Feed that features your personalized favorite teams and players, helping you stay on top of every DPC development along the road to The International.” The app should be live for both iOS and Android users, so head on over to your respective app stores if you’d like to check it out.
