No Man’s Sky To Get An Online Mode For Free This Summer

No Man’s Sky developers have continued to send out updates for the game to make improvements after many felt that the title hadn’t lived up to its hype. The updates have brought significant improvements to the game with the last major one coming in August 2018. Developer Hello Games has now revealed that it has been working on an online mode for the title which will arrive for free this summer.

Beyond is basically a bundle of the three planned updates as one large release, the studio says, with the first part being No Man’s Sky Online. Beyond is thus the next chapter for the title and will be available as a free download over the summer.

According to Hello Games, No Man’s Sky Online is a “new social and multiplayer experience.” It will let players meet and play together inside the in-game universe. No subscription would be required for this online experience and there won’t be any microtransactions as well so it can’t really be called an MMO.

Many players who had been hoping for an experience of this sort will now be excited to see what Hello Games has in store for them. The studio is going to provide more details about No Man’s Sky in the coming weeks. It will also be detailing the other two parts of the Beyond chapter.

DirectX 12 Windows 7 Support Arrives Only For Select Games

DirectX 12 was launched alongside Windows 10 in 2015 and it would have been a pretty big deal had it been supported on Windows 7 at that time. Four years have passed and a lot has changed since then. However, Microsoft has finally decided to take feedback into account that called on the company to enable DirectX12 Windows 7 support. It has done that but there’s a catch.

Even though DirectX 12 support is coming to Windows 7, it will only be good for select games. That’s because Microsoft is only working with a selected group of developers to port current DirectX 12 games to Windows 7. World of Warcraft is the first and currently the only game with DX12 support in Windows 7. That has been enabled with the 8.1.5 patch.

This change of heart on Microsoft’s part might appeal to some Windows 7 users but it doesn’t change the fact that DirectX 12 isn’t freely being supported on the operating system. Moreover, the company has already confirmed that Windows 7 reaches end of support on January 14th, 2020. It will also be sending out notifications to Windows 7 users in order to notify them about the impending end of support.

Microsoft has said that a few more games will be added to the list. “We are currently working with a few other game developers to port their D3D12 games to Windows 7. Please watch out for further announcements,” it confirmed.

New Sonic Game Confirmed To Be In Development

It has been a while since a main Sonic game was released. Fans of the iconic character can rejoice because it has now been confirmed that a new Sonic game has entered development. The confirmation came from Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka at the SXSW Sonic panel this weekend. He said that the studio has “begun production” on the next major Sonic the Hedgehog title.

The main topic of discussion for the panel was the upcoming Sonic kart racing title Team Sonic Racing which is going to be released in May. Lizuka did share some information towards the close of the panel about the status of the next main Sonic title.

He didn’t reveal a lot of information, though, only saying that the Sonic Team “have begun production on the next major Sonic title.” He added that the team “will be excited to share more news with you in the future, but for now, thank you for your patience until we have something to show.”

This suggests that it may be a while before the team reveals the title. Whether or not that happens in 2019 remains to be seen. There’s also no information on when this game is going to be released so fans still have to sit tight and wait patiently.

Tumblr Loses One-Fifth Of Its Users After Porn Ban

Tumblr announced in December last year that it will no longer allow pornographic content on its platform. It may have been widely used for sharing stories and images but there was a large subset of users that stuck with Tumblr because it allowed adult content. The ban has resulted in one-fifth of Tumblr’s user base deserting the platform.

SimilarWeb, a web analytics firm, reported that Tumblr website visits fell from 521 million in December 2018 to 437 million in January 2019. The decline was witnessed after the ban on adult content came into effect on December 17th.

Tumblr had announced last year that posts with adult content “will no longer be allowed,” and that it had updated its community guidelines to reflect the change in policy. It also said that automated tools would be used to identify adult content so that such posts could be flagged/removed automatically.

Its decision didn’t go well with the community that preferred the platform because it previously allowed them to post adult content. Many of its users participated in a “log off” protest which encouraged users to leave Tumblr. The figures show that the protest really made a noticeable dent in the site’s user base. However, Tumblr has shown no indications of walking back the policy despite considerable backlash from its users.

This Realistic Robot Puppy Is Here to Help the Elderly

There are many robot puppy toys out there that are built for entertainment and companionship, but Tombot Robotics is offering something with a much more meaningful purpose – a realistic dog that will help seniors with their health. It’s long been known that animal companionship can help the elderly maintain their mental and physical well-being, but it’s not always practical for them to take care of an actual pet. That’s where this robot companion comes in.

The robotics company collaborated with Hollywood animatronics experts at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop to get the look just right. No, they didn’t want it to look like a Muppet. The idea was to make it look like a real labrador retriever puppy. Its looks are not only very realistic, but so is the way it feels, and its behavior.

Being realistic is key, because research shows that those who suffer from dementia can see a decrease in behavioral and psychological symptoms when they form an emotional attachment to cute critters like this. Being emotionally attached also means being socially engaged. Plus having a pet (real or robotic) is shown to relieve stress and loneliness, and reduce anxiety. I mean, there’s nothing bad about a puppy right?

This adorable robot companion is available for pre-order on Kickstarter to get the word out that this pup is here to help seniors and others. You can get in on an early bird order for August 2020 delivery for $299. They also have shirts and mugs and stuff to help support the project.
