Ikea Has Delayed The Release Of Its Smart Blinds

Ikea unveiled its smart blinds not too long ago. The company was supposed to release them in the United States next month but it has now decided to delay the release. The company will now be releasing its smart blinds later in 2019, it’s going to work on improved firmware in the meantime.

The famous furniture company confirmed to The Verge today that the smart blinds are not going to be released in the United States as previously expected. The company has decided to delay the launch because of “an opportunity for improved functionality.” So it has to update the firmware before the smart blinds are launched.

There will be a benefit to this delay. Ikea has confirmed that the ability to control the blinds through the Ikea Trådfri smart home app and via that with Google Assistant, Siri, and Alexa will be available at launch. Customers would have previously had to wait for a firmware update to arrive for this functionality as it wouldn’t be available at launch.

Kadrilj, Ikea’s smart blinds, are reasonably priced compared to similar products from other companies. The smallest size is priced at around $110 while the Fyrtur blackout shades were reportedly going to cost around $130. Despite confirming the delay today, Ikea hasn’t said precisely when they will be released in the United States.

Googler Emma Haruka Breaks Pi Calculation World Record

Google’s Emma Haruka Iwao and her team have broken the Guinness World Record for calculating the most accurate value of pi. Little surprise that this accomplishment was announced on Pi Day. The team harnessed the power of cloud computing to successfully run calculations for 31,415,926,535,897 digits of pi.

Iwao works as a cloud developer advocate at Google. She and her team have broken the previous record of 22,459,157,718,361 digits which was set back in 2016. The same y-cruncher program was used to calculate pi as the previous record holder. However, the edge was provided by Google’s cloud-based compute engine.

To calculate the 31 trillion digits of pi, it took 25 virtual machines and 121 days to run the calculation. The previous record holder, Peter Trueb, used one very fast computer with two dozen 6TB hard drives to store the massive dataset produced. That calculation was completed in 105 days.

Iwao did mention that one of the biggest challenges with this project was the need for “a lot of storage and memory to calculate.” Over 170TB of memory was used for the calculation to be completed. Running this entire calculation in the cloud shielded the project from any potential hardware outage, not to mention the fact that Google’s cloud infrastructure is pretty solid.

Amazon Fire TV Picks Up Support For Apple Music

Apple Music has gradually been making its way to more platforms. Amazon’s Echo speakers picked up support for the music streaming service in December last year, allowing users to stream music from the service on-demand. It’s now possible for Amazon Fire TV users to do the same.

Starting today, Apple Music subscribers in the United States can play their music on the big screen through an Amazon Fire TV streaming box and stick. The company says that it will be possible for Echo and Fire TV device owners in the United Kingdom to do the same in the next few weeks.

It’s possible for Fire TV Cube owners to use Apple Music with their multi-room music setups as well. There’s no shortage of music streaming options for Fire TV owners. There’s Amazon Music, obviously, Spotify, iHeartRadio, and others. Nevertheless, this is a nice addition for Fire TV owners, who have already been able to stream music from Apple Music on an Echo device.

Users who have already linked their Apple Music account to Alexa don’t need to do anything else in order to start streaming music on a Fire TV device. It should work on its own and they will be able to stream music via Apple Music on their device right away.
