For a while now we have been hearing reports about some of the features of Android Q, where the folks at XDA Developers managed to get their hands on a leaked build, but unfortunately there was no mention of when the official developer preview would be launched. There was some speculation that we could be getting close, and now it seems like the time has come.
Google has officially announced the launch of the beta for Android Q. The beta will be initially available to Pixel devices which means that non-Pixel users will have to wait their turn. Note that this is only the beta which means that certain features might not work, or certain features could actually end up getting removed ahead of the final release.
As such it’s not recommended that users use the Android Q beta as their daily driver, but if you are interested in checking it out, more details about the beta can be found on Google’s website. There is no word on when the final update will be released, but given Google’s past releases, there is a good chance that this will probably take place in the later part of the year alongside the 2019 Pixel smartphones.
In the meantime we expect that developers will continue to uncover features that are part of Android Q, so do check back with us at a later date for more updates.

The problem with lithium-ion batteries is that they can be dangerous if not stored properly. As we have seen in the past, these batteries can explode. This is why the US Product and Safety Commission has announced that HP will be recalling several laptop models over a potential fire and hazard.
According to HP, they stressed that there is nothing wrong with the laptops but rather the batteries associated with the laptops. So why the recall of the entire laptop? This is because the models affected by the laptop feature nonremovable batteries, meaning that users will not be able to just take out the battery and swap it for a new one.
This recall isn’t new as it was initiated back in the start of 2018 and affects a variety of HP laptops launched between April 2015 and December 2018. “Batteries affected by this program may have been shipped with specific HP Probook 64x (G2 and G3), HP ProBook 65x (G2 and G3), HP ProBook 4xx G4 (430, 440, 450, 455, and 470), HP x360 310 G2, HP ENVY M6, HP Pavilion x360, HP 11 notebook computers and HP ZBook (17 G3, 17 G4, and Studio G3) mobile workstations sold worldwide from December 2015 through April 2018.”
For more information about the recall and if you want to check if you are affected by the recall, head on over to HP’s website for the details.

According to the rumors, Apple could be planning to refresh its iPad lineup. One of the tablets part of the refresh is the iPad mini 5 and also the budget iPad model that was originally launched in 2018. However it turns out that the refresh of the budget iPad could also come in a new design.
This is according to a leakster by the name CoinX who claims that Apple could actually be working on two new iPads – a 10.2-inch model and a 10.5-inch model. He/she also claims that the tablets will be launching separately as opposed to together. If true, it will be put the iPad lineup in a bit of a weird spot.
As it stands Apple has two iPad Pro models. They also the budget iPad which is keeping the 9.7-inch display, so it is unclear where these new models will fit. Will Apple replace the 9.7-inch model with the 10.2-inch model? And if so, what will the 10.5-inch represent? Will it still be part of the budget lineup except with a slightly larger display for those who might need the screen real estate?
As AppleInsider notes, CoinX has in the past been pretty accurate with their leaks, such as predicting the 2018 iPad Pros and also the 2018 iPhones, so there is a chance that their latest revelations could be spot on as well, but until we get the official word, take it with a grain of salt for now.

In the past we have come across incredible stories of how our gadgets have managed to save lives by stopping things like bullets and shrapnel. Adding to those stories is a report out of Australia in which it seems that a man from New South Wales had his life saved by his iPhone when it stopped an arrow that was shot at him.
According to the report from News.com.au, a man was ambushed by another man in his driveway in the morning. The victim took out his iPhone to record the assailant who then aimed a bow and arrow at him and shot. As you can see from the photo above, the arrow nearly went through the iPhone but was ultimately stopped.
The victim was not seriously injured and only suffered a slight laceration and did not require medical treatment. It was also speculated that the laceration was not from the arrow, but rather the force from the arrow which caused the phone to hit the victim in the chin.
The attacker was then arrested at the scene by officers who responded to the incident. He was also charged with armed and intent to commit an indictable offense, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and malicious damage.

For the longest time ever, PCs and keyboards have come with media keys on them. These keys provide shortcuts for users to control their media, such as pausing/playing a song, skipping a track, and so on. However the only downside is that for the most part, they only worked with apps and not websites.
This means that if you’re watching a YouTube video, you will need to go to the video to pause it instead of using the media key. However the good news is that Google has recently updated its Chrome browser where it will now support your PC’s media keys. This means that while you watch videos on the web, you will be able to control its playback using those media keys if you choose to.
This will work even if the browser is in the background, like if you have a YouTube music playlist that is playing, you can use the media keys to control its playback without having to bring the browser to the foreground. However a downside as noted by Engadget is that if you do keep other media apps open, like VLC, iTunes, and so on, it could interfere with the controls so do keep that in mind if you plan on taking advantage of the feature.

Having a steady hand while taking photos can mean the difference between a photo that is perfectly sharp and one that is blurred. Since it can be difficult to remain perfectly still all the time, that’s where image stabilization tech comes into play. The good news is that if you are planning on buying a Canon EOS R camera, Canon has confirmed that in-body image stabilization (IBIS) will be a feature on future cameras.
This is according to an interview that Amateur Photographer did at CP+ where the publication managed to speak to several Canon executives. When the topic of IBIS was brought up, Canon’s execs confirmed that this would be a feature that photographers will be able to expect in future cameras.
“In terms of IBIS, we are looking into it for the future. We believe IBIS will work together hand in hand with optical IS lenses, such as the ones you see in front of you, to offer better features.” IBIS would no doubt be a much welcome feature as it means that regardless of the lens attached to the camera, there will be stabilization.
This is versus lens-based stabilization where it will depend on whether the lens has the feature or not, which isn’t as convenient. No word on which future models will be getting the feature, but we’ll keep an eye out for details.

One of the features of Waze is that a lot of the information you can see in the app is crowdsourced. For example Waze gives users the ability to report things like accidents (which other users can later confirm whether or not it is still there), speed traps, police road blocks, and more.
Now it seems that Google Maps is getting similar features as well. According to a post on Reddit (via 9to5Google), users are reporting that they are now seeing the ability to report on accidents and speed traps through Google Maps. This comes in the form of a new icon that you can see on the app (see screenshot above) where upon tapping it, users will be able to report accidents or speed traps.
Those are the only two options presented to users at the moment and it is unclear if Google Maps will be getting other reporting features similar to Waze. How the feature works is pretty straightforward, where all users need to do is click on the icon and it should show up on the map for other Google Map users.
As 9to5Google points out, this isn’t exactly a new feature as Google has been working on and testing out this feature since at least last year. However based on the roll out, it seems that Google could finally be done with it (or are expanding the testing in a larger way), so keep an eye out for it on your phone.
