Apple’s TV Service May Initially Have More Third-Party Content

Apple has been investing heavily in original content for its long-rumored TV service. It has now announced an event for March 25th where this service is expected to be announced. A new report mentions that most of Apple’s original content won’t be ready in time for the launch. This means that the service will largely rely on third-party content initially.

Bloomberg reports that much of Apple’s original content is not going to be ready at the time of the service’s launch later this month. Apple is expected to show some teasers on stage but the launch lineup will mostly consist of third-party content.

For this reason, Apple is in talks with a variety of content providers, including premium cable networks like HBO and Showtime. They have reportedly still not decided if they want to be a part of Apple’s service and have to reportedly make a decision by this Friday.

It’s not known at this point in time if Apple’s service will offer some or all content from these premium networks. Many of these networks have their own streaming services and it’s already possible to access their libraries from the TV app on iOS devices and the Apple TV.

Official details on the service are obviously slim at this point in time. Apple is expected to reveal more details about the service at its March 25th event.

Microsoft Demonstrates Its xCloud Game Streaming Service

Some of you might be aware that Microsoft has been working on a game streaming service of its own. With Google announcing a “future of gaming event” for next week, Microsoft has now provided a demonstration of its Project xCloud game streaming service. Public trials of the service are going to be launched later this year.

Microsoft first unveiled xCloud last year, saying that the service will enable users to stream titles to consoles, PCs, and even mobile devices. The company’s CEO Satya Nadella said that public trials of the service will begin in 2019. There hasn’t been much update on this front from Microsoft but it has now shown a demonstration of the Project xCloud streaming service publicly for the first time.

Microsoft demoed Forza Horizon 4 streaming to an Android device from its Azure datacenters at the Inside Xbox event yesterday. There was a Bluetooth controller connected to the phone thus highlighting the ease at which users will be able to stream and play titles like Forza Horizon 4 on a mobile device.

“We’re developing Project xCloud not as a replacement for game consoles, but as a way to provide the same choice and versatility that lovers of music and video enjoy today,” said Kareem Choudhry, the head of Microsoft’s cloud gaming efforts.

The company still hasn’t confirmed, though, when public trials will be launched for the game streaming service.

NASA May Use Commercial Rockets For Upcoming Moon Mission

NASA caught many by surprise at a Senate hearing today when its administrator Jim Bridenstine suggested that the agency’s upcoming Moon mission might fly on a commercial rocket. Orion is NASA’s upcoming crew vehicle and its first flight, dubbed Exploration Mission-1, is scheduled for June 2020.

The first test has been planned as an uncrewed test. It will involve sending the crew vehicle around the Moon for six days while the total mission duration will be around three weeks. It was previously believed that this mission would mark the debut of the Space Launch System or SLS, NASA’s heavy lift rocket.

However, due to the ongoing production and cost overrun issues with the SLS program, the EM-1’s launch date has already been pushed back multiple times. So in order to have some progress on the Moon mission by next year, the administration now appears to be willing to send the mission up on a commercial rocket.

A firm decision has not yet been made, though, and it will be decided in the next few weeks whether or not Exploration Mission-1 will indeed be launched with a commercial operator. The only two heavy lift rockets operating currently that are capable of supporting this missile are the Falcon Heavy from SpaceX and the ULA’s Delta IV Heavy.
