Facebook Coin Rumors Supported By ‘Pay With Facebook’ Option

It has been reported for a while now that Facebook is looking to launch its own digital currency that’s commonly referred to as Facebook Coin right now. The company hasn’t made any official announcements regarding this as yet but a new “Pay with Facebook” option noticed by users in Italy suggests that it may not be long before we hear from Facebook about this.

The Pay with Facebook option noticed by several Italian-language Facebook users has a Bitcoin-like icon which hints at the digital currency nature of this payment option. Italian site Mobile World reports that this option has been spotted by users on both the Android and iOS Facebook apps in Italy. There have been no reports of this option surfacing in any other market.

No further details are available about this payment option right now but it seems to be different from the payment service in Facebook Messenger which has been available for a couple of years now. Mobile World reports that this new system works in a fashion similar to Facebook Marketplace where the buyer has to send a payment request first and then wait for it to be accepted. Instead of using funds in their local currency or from their bank account, users will apparently be able to make use of this new digital currency to make purchases.

Reports also suggest that the Facebook Coin could also be used for payments in the company’s other platforms like WhatsApp but all of this is just speculation at this point in time. Nothing has been officially confirmed by Facebook regarding a digital currency.

Google Reportedly Downsizing Tablet And Laptop Division

Has Google decided that its tablet and laptop gambit has not paid off? A new report claims so. It mentions that Google is downsizing its laptop and tablet hardware divisions. The company is said to be asking employees to move to other positions within Alphabet temporarily due to “roadmap cutbacks.”

Citing sources familiar with the developments over at Google, Business Insider reports that Google has told dozens of employees on the Google Create division, which worked on its Pixelbook and Pixel Slate hardware, to more to other positions within Alphabet temporarily.

Employees that have been asked to move to other positions reportedly include technical program managers, hardware engineers, and program manager supporters. This decision is said to have been made because of project cancellations at Google Create. This is the in-house division which developed the Pixelbook, Pixel Slate, and other products that were branded “Made by Google.”

One source mentions that the Google Create team had “a bunch of stuff in the works” and this move shows that the company is cutting down the portfolio of products. Whether or not this means that the company won’t launch another Pixelbook or Pixel Slate remains to be seen. Since Google is asking them to temporarily move to other positions and not laying them off, it’s possible that these changes could be reverted down the line.

WhatsApp To Prevent Fake News With Image Search Tool

The spread of fake news remains a constant problem for WhatsApp and the Facebook-owned company continues to take steps in order to clamp down on it. A new report reveals that the company is developing a new feature which will enable users to identify whether an image that they have received is legitimate or not.

A “search by image” tool has been discovered by the folks at WABetaInfo in update 2.19.73 of WhatsApp. This feature will allow users to upload a received image directly to Google so that they can find “similar or equal” images on the internet. You can already do a reverse image search on Google so this tool is essentially tapping into that from within WhatsApp.

That additional context will hopefully enable users to ascertain the legitimacy of the images that they receive on WhatsApp. This feature hasn’t been enabled in the app as yet and the company hasn’t said when it plans on doing so.

Since it has been developed, it may be officially rolled out to WhatsApp users in the coming weeks. An easy and quick reverse image search feature in WhatsApp will certainly come in handy to prevent the spread of misinformation on the world’s biggest cross-platform messaging app.
