Jigsaw’s Tune Chrome extension filters out toxic comments

The Internet is something of an equal opportunity tool that empowers both the good and the bad. The anonymity it provides has encouraged frightened voices to speak up in opposition to oppressive powers but it has also emboldened less conscientious actors to say things they would never say face-to-face. That’s why Alphabet’s Jigsaw is working on an experimental Tune Chrome … Continue reading

Alphabet’s AI-Powered Chrome Extension Will Hide Toxic Comments

Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and Reddit face toxic comments everyday, and unfortunately it is rather difficult to try and put a stop to. If you’re the type of person who’d rather not have your day sullied by toxic comments, then perhaps Tune might be a Chrome extension worth checking out.

Developed by Jigsaw, an offshoot of Alphabet, Tune is an AI-powered Chrome extension that has the ability to hide toxic comments from your view. Tune is built on the company’s previous efforts, Perspective, which launched a couple of years ago which also attempted to fight toxic comments online automatically through machine learning.

Users will have the option of tuning the comments to their preferred levels, where they can opt to hide all toxic comments completely, or turn it off and allow everything in, or set it somewhere in the middle where you get a nice mix of both if you’d rather not completely sanitized comments.

However according to Jigsaw, they note that the machine learning used by Tune is still very much experimental which means that it might work in some instances, and it might not in other instances, but they’re working on improving it. If this is an extension you might be interested in, you can download it via the Chrome Web Store.

Withings Sleep Tracking Mat Can Now Detect Sleep Apnea

According to the statistics, about 22 million people in the US suffer from sleep apnea. It’s not something that you might know you have, but if you usually find yourself waking up feeling more tired despite having 8 hours of sleep (or more), there is a chance that sleep apnea could be the reason.

However one of the ways to test it is to go for a sleep clinic in which you will be monitored for the problem, but if you’d rather not go through the hassle, Withings has announced that its sleep mat has recently been updated where it will now be able to detect if the user is suffering from sleep apnea.

According to the company, “The new feature acts as a first step towards Withings’ strategy to introduce even more advanced sleep diagnostics including sleep apnea detection, which affects 22 million Americans, 80% of whom are unaware they have the condition despite its potential for serious health impacts.”

If you already own the sleep tracking mat, you won’t need to do anything new as the feature will come in the form of an update. If you don’t, then you can pick one up from Amazon for $100. Note that the mat can only diagnose sleep apnea and that you will still need to make a trip to the doctor or hospital if you do suffer from it.

Chrome Lite Pages Will Help Speed Up HTTPS Websites

One of the features of Chrome on Android is the Data Saver. As its name implies, this feature will help reduce the amount of data a website consumes while helping it load faster at the same time. However the only problem was that it only worked with HTTP websites, versus the more “secure” HTTPS websites that is becoming more commonplace these days.

However according to Google, they have since made some changes where Data Saver will now help to speed up HTTPS websites through Chrome Lite Pages. “We use built-in optimizations and Google servers to improve page loading. The specific optimization techniques depend on what region the user is in and on how the developer wrote and served that particular page. When Chrome optimizes an HTTPS page, only the URL is shared with Google; other information – cookies, login information, and personalized page content – is not shared with Google.”

Typically such data saving features are aimed more towards users in emerging markets where internet speeds aren’t quite as fast. However even if you live somewhere with fast internet speeds, it’s not a bad idea to try and improve their load times anyway.

If this sounds like a feature you’d like to check out, make sure that you have the latest version of Chrome on Android, head on to the Settings menu where you will be able to find the toggle for the feature.

Gboard on Pixel phones get fast offline speech recognition

Even before there was Google Assistant, Google was already playing with voice and speech recognition for various features, including Voice Search. Like most of Google’s AI-powered functionality, however, those relied on an active, not to mention good, Internet connection. That’s OK when you’re trying to search for something online or place an order, not so much when you’re dictating or … Continue reading
