Huawei P30 images show off flat tops and bottoms

In just a few days, Huawei will be unveiling what many expect and some hope to be the camera smartphones of the year, topping the company’s own Huawei P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro from last year. While that will be the biggest change inside, Huawei has changed very little on the outside of the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro. … Continue reading

The UK's Extremely Dumb Plan to Force Porn Sites to Verify Users' Ages May Come Next Month

The UK’s disastrous plan to implement a nationwide system blocking web users from viewing pornography unless their age and identities are confirmed by a verification service—an astonishingly ill-conceived idea being spearheaded by doddering Brexiteer Theresa May’s Tory government—is nearly a year behind schedule. But…

Apple Confirms ‘It’s Show Time’ Event For March 25

Last month there was a rumor that Apple could be planning a star-studded event for the 25th of March. The company is expected to launch its new streaming service and it was also rumored that many celebrities could be in attendance. Whether or not that is true remains to be seen, but at the very least Apple has confirmed that they are hosting such an event.

The company has officially announced that come 25th of March, they will be hosting an event aptly named, “It’s Show Time”. Based on the name it is pretty much a giveaway that it will be about the company’s upcoming streaming service. Not much is known about the service for now, but some claim that Apple’s original content could be released for free for device owners, and they will also have the option to subscribe to other services as well. Exactly how this will work out is unclear, but we should find out soon enough.

Apple has also been rumored to be planning other kinds of services too, such as a revamped news service which could combine news and magazines, which is one of the reasons why Apple had acquired the Texture magazine subscription service. We’re also unsure if this event could potentially unveil new hardware, especially since devices like the iMac have yet to be updated for nearly 2 years now.

In any case we should have all the official details soon, so do check back with us in the coming weeks if you’d like to learn more about what Apple has to offer.

Huawei Caught Using Stock Photos To Promote The P30 Pro’s Camera

You would think that after getting caught the first time trying to pass off a DSLR photo as a photo taken by their smartphone, Huawei would be a bit more careful with their marketing materials. However it seems that the company hasn’t learnt from its previous PR blunder because they were caught doing it again.

Huawei recently shared a series of promotional images that were meant to promote their upcoming P30 series of smartphones, but as GSMArena found out, the photos used to promote the camera on the phones were not actually taken by the phones themselves. They weren’t even taken by Huawei either as a quick reverse image search pulled up several photos belonging to Getty Images, a repository of stock images.

While we understand that this is merely for marketing purposes, it can be a bit misleading as you might think that the level of bokeh and image quality can be achieved using the company’s phones. Also zooming in to a cropped photo taken by a professional camera will obviously yield very different results compared to that of a smartphone.

This is due to professional cameras sporting larger sensors and better lenses, allowing it to capture more detail and clarity compared to most smartphones. That being said, we love what Huawei has done with its cameras, so it is unclear why the company felt the need to embark on what feels like a misleading marketing campaign.

Huawei Has A ‘Plan B’ To Android Should It Ever Be Required

The majority of smartphones out there run on Google’s Android operating system. Even devices in China where Google’s services are almost non-existent are powered by the mobile operating system. We’re sure that many would much prefer using their own OS as it means more control over what it can do and what goes into it, but we imagine that it could be hard breaking Google’s grasp.

However it seems that Huawei is more than prepared. Speaking during an interview with German publication Welt, Huawei’s CEO Richard Yu revealed that the company has actually built and developed their own operating system should the day ever arise that Android is no longer available to them.

According to Yu (translated), “We have prepared our own operating system. Should it ever happen that we can no longer use these systems, we would be prepared. That’s our plan B. But of course we prefer to work with the ecosystems of Google and Microsoft.” Huawei would not be the first company to develop its own platform as an alternative to Android.

Samsung has in the past tried to use Tizen, although admittedly it never quite took off. As to why Huawei might be concerned about why Android may no longer be available to them: the company has been facing a bit of pushback from various governments around the world regarding their technology. They have also seen deals with carriers and retailers fall through.

There is also a concern that one day Google might decide that they’d rather keep Android for themselves instead of making it open source. Of course whether or not that day actually comes remains to be seen, but in the meantime Huawei seems to be prepared for it.
