Huawei Says Over 10 Million Mate 20 Units Shipped Globally

Huawei has received largely positive reviews for the Mate 20 series which was found to be a pretty solid offering compared to some of the other smartphones on the market. It appears that the company has seen considerable demand for the Mate 20. Huawei has now revealed that it has shipped more than 10 million units of the Mate 20 globally.

Granted, shipped does not mean sold, but such a high number suggests that there has been good demand from customers for the Mate 20. It’s pertinent to mention here that Huawei’s smartphones are not officially available in the United States. This 10 million figure doesn’t include any shipments to the United States, one of the primary markets for premium smartphones.

The 10 million figure represents shipments for the entire Mate 20 lineup which includes the Mate 20, Mate 20 Lite, Mate 20 Pro, and the Mate 20 X. Some variants are market-specific but the overall performance is commendable given that the series was launched in October last year.

Huawei has made no secret of the fact that it wants to become the top smartphone vendor in the world. It has been rolling out some impressive devices to help guide it to that spot. The company’s upcoming devices, the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro, are due to be unveiled on March 26th. It remains to be seen if they will receive a similar response from customers when they hit the market.

FDA Restrictions On Genetically Modified Salmon Removed

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has lifted an import alert on genetically modified salmon. This means that the genetically modified fish will eventually find its way into the country’s food supply. The import alert on AquaBounty’s AquAdvantage salmon eggs has been lifted. The fish can now reach the United States some three years after initial approval was granted by the FDA.

The FDA had been told by Congress in 2016 to block the modified salmon until new labeling guidelines were issued. The administration is now of the view that the recently enacted National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard is in line with that directive.

FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb added that the genetic changes have been found to be safe for the salmon and that they won’t have a “significant” impact on the environment. The modifications that AquaBounty has made use DNA from other fish to speed up the rate at which salmon grow. While this has raised concerns about contamination, these modified salmon are bred to be sterile and female which eliminates the possibility of them breeding with wild salmon.

AquaBounty boss Sylvia Wulf has said that the certification for a growing facility in Indiana is expected to arrive in weeks following which the eggs would be received. It would take around 18 months after that for the salmon to reach their target weight. It remains to be seen if that ends up happening as an alliance of environmental, pro-fishing, and public interest groups are in the process of suing the FDA to pull the approval on safety grounds.

WhatsApp Banning Users Running Modified Apps

WhatsApp is the world’s most popular cross-platform messaging service. It’s sending warns that urge users to not use third-party modified versions of the app such as WhatsApp Plus and GB WhatsApp. The company has said that those who use these apps are at a security risk since WhatsApp can’t vouch for the security practices of the modified versions. The Facebook-owned company has even said that it will ban users that use the modified apps.

Users who opt for the modified versions of the WhatsApp app will be handed out temporary bans for their accounts. If they get banned, they have to download the official version of WhatsApp to regain access to their account.

Users are also responsible for saving their chat history before they download the official app if they’re using a modified version other than WhatsApp Plus or GB WhatsApp. Reports suggest that this new policy is already in place and that WhatsApp is actively handing out temporary bans so that users turn to the official app instead. It has also issued warnings that the entire chat history of users violating this guideline may be deleted.

If for some reason you having been using a WhatsApp clone, it would probably be best to get rid of that and install the official version on your device.

Tesla Owner Claims Unintended Acceleration Crashed His Vehicle

There have been a couple of cases involving Tesla vehicles alleging unintended acceleration and there’s another addition to the list, this time from China. A Model S owner crashed his vehicle into the river near a Supercharger station in China. The owner claims that the car had accelerated on its own and ended up in the river.

According to reports, this Model S ended up in the river next to the Tesla Qingpu District Supercharger in Shanghai last week. The owner, Xiao Chen, was pulling into the Supercharger station when he claims the car accelerated on its own and got out of his control.

“I was from the beginning stepping on the brakes, and the car suddenly rushed out of control!,” translated local media reports quoting the owner say, adding that the owner is adamant that he was driving very slowly when pulling into the station but the car itself got out of control.

Since the car had hit shallow water once it broke through the fence, both the driver and passenger were able to safely get out of the vehicle. Tesla is reportedly investigating the matter. The logs in earlier incidents have often revealed the driver to be at fault so it remains to be seen if a similar discovery will be made in this incident as well.

Adobe Shockwave To Be Discontinued At Last On April 9th

It’s not just Flash that Adobe has given up on. Taking into account customer feedback, Adobe has confirmed that it’s now going to discontinue Shockwave at last for Windows. This will happen next month, on April 9th to be precise, after Adobe already phased out the Director authoring tool and the Mac player two years ago.

For most people, this will be the swan song for Adobe’s web plugin. The only users who will continue to receive support for Shockwave beyond April 9th, 2019 will be enterprise customers who have contracts that are due to run out in 2022.

It’s not surprising to see that Adobe has now decided to make this decision. The Shockwave plugin isn’t as useful as it once used to be. The use has declined as the internet has adopted newer technologies such as HTML5.

Adobe discontinuing Shockwave may not mean much to most users as they’re unlikely to face any issues due to its absence on most websites. Many developers gave up on Shockwave long ago which is why there won’t be any issues with modern websites. However, some issues may be noticed on older websites that have features and media experiences built using Shockwave, so do keep that in mind.
