Kazuo Hirai is a legendary figure at Japanese conglomerate Sony. The former CEO is credited with leading the company’s turnaround in recent years. Now, he has decided to take a well-earned retirement. An announcement sent out today confirmed that after 35 years of service at the company, Kazuo Hirai will now be retiring.
Hirai took the CEO job in 2012 as he replaced Sir Howard Stringer and set about implementing a turnaround strategy that saw the company become a profitable business once again. Hirai previously led Sony’s PlayStation business and that also played a significant part in returning the company to profitability.
He stepped down from the CEO role in April last year. He transitioned to chairman of the board while his CFO Kenichiro Yoshida became CEO. Hirai will now be retiring as the Chairman of Sony Corporation on June 18th, 2019. However, the company says that he will continue to provide guidance as requested by Sony’s management team in the capacity of Senior Advisor for the Company.
“Since passing the baton of CEO to Yoshida-san last April, as Chairman of Sony, I have had the opportunity to both ensure a smooth transition and provide support to Sony’s management. I am confident that everyone at Sony is fully aligned under Yoshida-san’s strong leadership, and are ready to build an even brighter future for Sony,” Hirai said in a statement.

Twitter is thinking about slapping a label on tweets that violate its terms of service but it may want to keep them on the platform because that might be in the public interest. For example, if a prominent politician tweets something that may go against the terms of service, Twitter may label the tweet as such but may not remove it because of its news value.
That’s according to the company’s head of legal, policy and trust Vijaya Gadde who told the Washington Post that the label would provide some context about such a tweet “so that people are aware that that content is actually a violation of our rules and it is serving a particular purpose in remaining on the platform.”
Twitter’s rules do allow for a newsworthiness exemption so tweets from people that are deemed notable enough do stay on the platform even if they might have been removed if they were posted by a regular user. This label that’s being considered would serve to clarify this disparity that the tweets in violation have not been removed simply because of their news value.
Gadde did add that Twitter does not provide a blanket exception to anyone for tweets that go against its terms. The platform will continue to take down tweets that cross red lines. “An example would be a direct violent threat against an individual that we wouldn’t leave on the platform because of the danger it poses to that individual,” she said.

Boeing had said a couple of weeks ago that it would roll out a software update fix for the 737 Max jets which have been involved in fatal crashes merely five months apart. Earlier reports have suggested that the updates would improve safety features of the aircraft to ensure that such accidents never take place against. Boeing has now detailed its 737 Max software update fix.
Once the fix is installed, the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) will now require data from both angle of attack sensors as opposed to activating based on data from just one sensor. If there’s a disagreement between both sensors of 5.5 degrees or more, the system won’t activate. The MCAS system will also reduce its input during an incident and won’t apply rigid input to the stabilizers that prevent the pilots from making their own inputs.
There have also been questions about the training provided to pilots about the new system Boeing has now developed a new PC-based training program which will help pilots better understand the MCAS system and teach them how to react when it kicks in. A safety feature which Boeing previously sold as an option to airlines will now be offered for free as well. It’s a disagree light which will notify the pilots that both angle of attack sensors are at odds with each other.
The Federal Aviation Administration now has to approve the fix and it will take considerable time after that for airlines to install it on their planes, get it tested by their pilots, and then train crews on the change. That’s in addition to tests that foreign airlines and regulators may want to run on their own before they allow the Boeing 737 Max to take to the skies once again. As of right now, all 737 Max planes remain grounded across the globe.

A new report from The Intercept claims that executives at Google are conducting a secret internet assessment of the work on a censored search engine for China. The government of the People’s Republic maintains a tight grip on the internet in its country and as such, foreign companies like Google are only allowed to operate their services if they comply with strict local laws.
The report adds that a small group of top managers at Google is carrying out a “performance review” of Dragonfly, the controversial effort to build a censored search platform for China. Such performance reviews are done annually at Google to measure employees’ output and development. They’re normally done in an open and peer review-style process. Workers are allowed to grade each other’s projects and the results are then assessed by the management.
In Dragonfly’s case, the peer review aspect has reportedly been done away with. Two Google sources cited in the report say that this procedure is highly unusual as executives have set up a separate group of closed “review committees” that have senior managers who had all been briefed about Dragonfly previously. There has been criticism within the company as employees have not been happy about the controversial project.
Google said last year that it currently had no plans to launch Dragonfly. The report mentions that work on the censored search engine is ongoing but the company maintains that there is “no work being undertaken on such a project. Team members have moved to new projects.”
