MIT’s New Robot Can Do Backflips

The Cheetah team at MIT has already shown that they’re pretty good with making robots and their latest creation just might be their most impressive robot so far. Some of the robots that they have previously made are capable of jumping through hurdles and even navigating blindly. This new robot can do backflips.

The new Mini Cheetah robot weighs just 20 pounds and can perform several different actions. The team calls it “virtually indestructible” and that does appear to be the message you take away from the video released by the team.

This robot can run at speeds of up to five miles per hour and can also do a 360 degree backflip from a standing position. It can even right itself quickly after it’s kicked to the ground.

It would also be easier to repair if the robot ever gets damaged since each of the four legs use three inexpensive electric motors. So when a part fails, all you have to do is swap it out for a new one. Lead developer Benjamin Katz said that “because the robot is super robust and doesn’t break easily, and if it does break, it’s easy and not very expensive to fix.”

The MIT is creating 10 more of such robots in order to “to form a mini cheetah research consortium of engineers, who can invent, swap, and even compete with new ideas.”

Apex Legends Crosses 50 Million Players In One Month

Respawn Entertainment’s Apex Legends battle royale title has seen considerable success ever since the surprise launch of this game set in the world of Titanfall. It continues to see growth at a healthy pace so much so that EA and Respawn have now announced that merely a month after the game’s launch it now has more than 50 million players worldwide.

A tweet sent out by the official Apex Legends account confirmed that the title now has more than 50 million players worldwide. “We are humbled by all your support and can’t wait to show you what’s next,” it said.

The developer and publisher haven’t revealed the number of simultaneous players so it’s unclear how the game is doing on that front but it did see more than two million people playing at the same time during its first weekend.

It’s a significant achievement for this title given the fact that Respawn still has to kick off the season pass or even introduce more new content other than just some cosmetic items and a new weapon.

Apex Legends still has a ways to go before it can reach the numbers that Fortnite boasts, 200 million players as of this fall, but it’s pertinent to mention here that Fortnite has been out for much longer and the figure also includes players on mobile. Apex Legends is only available on consoles and Windows PC right now.
