Apple Has An Idea On How To Prevent Flexible Displays From Cracking

Are foldable phones the future? That’s hard to say given that no one has one yet and it has yet to be decided if the concept is pure novelty or if it truly represents the next evolution in terms of smartphone design. While Apple has kept mum about their plans or thoughts on such devices, they have been quietly exploring the idea.

More recently it seems that a recently discovered patent (via AppleInsider) has revealed that Apple is looking into preventing foldable displays from cracking while faced with extreme temperatures. According to Apple, they claim that flexible displays could be prone to damage when bent in cold temperatures. The company has since proposed a solution in which the folded part of the display could be heated up to help prevent cracking.

This can be done by either lighting up the pixels in that particular area of the screen or a heating element could be introduced. It even suggests the use of a magnetic latching mechanism that would prevent the phone from being folded or unfolded when faced with such extreme temperatures.

It is an interesting take on things and if anything, it suggests that Apple is indeed exploring the technology. Whether or not Apple will actually move forward with such a device remains to be seen so maybe don’t get your hopes up just yet.

Huawei P30 Pro Will Support 40W Fast Charging

Image credit – Julian Chokkattu/Digital Trends

Fast charging is a feature that we’re starting to see on more phones these days, and the good news is that it looks like Huawei will be including the feature in its upcoming Huawei P30 Pro handset. In a report from MySmartPrice, China’s certification agency TENAA has revealed some of the specs of the upcoming handset, and fast charging is one of them.

According to the listing, the P30 Pro is expected to feature 40W fast charging, while the P30 will support 22.5W fast charging, slightly slower but still pretty decent nonetheless. Note that 40W fast charging isn’t exactly new as the Mate 20 Pro from 2018 was launched with 40W fast charging as well.

This means that Huawei will not be bumping up the speed of the charging feature to bring it in line with some of its competition, namely Oppo whose SuperVOOC offers 50W fast charging. However it is faster than others such as OnePlus whose fast charging speeds are at 30W, so it’s somewhere in between.

In any case the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro are expected to be officially announced on the 26th of March at the company’s own event that will be held in Paris, so check back with us then for the details.

CDs, Vinyls Are Reportedly Outselling Music Downloads

When digital music was first introduced, it was heralded as being the next standard in terms of music. It made sense because other physical formats of music such as CDs and vinyl not only consume resources when producing them, but they also take up space and it can be annoying to have to keep changing them out when you want new songs.

However in a somewhat interesting twist. A report from CNET has revealed that physical formats such as CDs and vinyls are actually on the rise again and are outselling music downloads, or to be more specific, iTunes downloads. This is based on data from the Recording Industry Association of America, or RIAA which found that downloads represented 11% of the revenue US labels made last year, versus physical sales which accounted for 12%.

However this does not mean that physical formats will be replacing digital music anytime soon. Instead it seems that while downloads are decreasing in terms of sales, streaming is on the rise where they represented a whopping 75% of revenue last year. This is why it’s not surprising to see many companies try their hand at launching their own music streaming services.

Right now Spotify is pretty much the king and sitting at the top of the pile, but Apple Music isn’t too far behind which could potentially allow Apple to help make up for the decrease in downloads.

Twitter Confirms They’re Testing A ‘Hide Tweet’ Feature

Twitter has come under fire in the past over how they seemingly don’t do enough to protect users from abusive users. There have been more than one instance of people, including high profile celebrities, being chased off the platform by trolls who leave behind abusive comments towards them.

However the good news is that it looks like Twitter is finally doing something about it. According to researcher Jane Manchun Wong (via TechCrunch), she has discovered that Twitter is testing out a new feature in the form of “hide tweets”. What this does is that it will hide tweets in conversations that users do not want to see.

Twitter Senior PM Michelle Yasmeen Haq has since confirmed that this is indeed a feature that is in the works and explained how it works. “We already see people trying keep their conversations healthy by using block, mute, and report, but these tools don’t always address the issue. Block and mute only change the experience of the blocker, and report only works for the content that violates our policies.”

She adds, “With this feature, the person who started a conversation could choose to hide replies to their tweets. The hidden replies would be viewable by others through a menu option. We think the transparency of the hidden replies would allow the community to notice and call out situations where people use the feature to hide content they disagree with. We think this can balance the product experience between the original Tweeter and the audience.”

Whether or not this will be enough remains to be seen, but the feature is expected to roll out in a bigger way in the coming months.

YouTube Will Now Disable Comments On Videos With Minors

With YouTube being such an open platform, moderating it can be difficult and as such it is usually left to the channel owners to moderate their own channels and comments. Unfortunately not all creators have the time to do so, which unfortunately has led to some very inappropriate comments being left behind on videos featuring minors.

YouTube has since announced that they will be taking drastic steps to prevent such comments from surfacing by disabling all comments on videos that might feature a minor. “Over the past week, we disabled comments from tens of millions of videos that could be subject to predatory behavior. These efforts are focused on videos featuring young minors and we will continue to identify videos at risk over the next few months. Over the next few months, we will be broadening this action to suspend comments on videos featuring young minors and videos featuring older minors that could be at risk of attracting predatory behavior.”

YouTube notes that a small number of creators will still be able to keep their comments enabled, but will be required to actively moderate their comments beyond YouTube’s own moderation tools, and also demonstrate a “low risk of predatory behavior”. More recently YouTube had also blocked ads on videos that contained predatory comments.

While we can appreciate what YouTube is doing, their all-or-nothing approach isn’t sitting well with some creators who feel that it is unfair. However we can only hope that whatever YouTube is doing now is a temporary measure until they can come up with a more viable solution for the long-term.
