Facebook Messenger Dark Mode Can Be Accessed With A Simple Trick

It was already known that Facebook is working on a dark mode for its popular Messenger app and the company is now available through a simple trick. There’s not a simple toggle that you tap to enable dark mode. Facebook has actually hidden it behind a trick which requires you to moon someone, (but not really.)

The folks at 9to5Mac spotted this trick to enable dark mode in Facebook Messenger. Just send yourself or one of your contacts a crescent moon emoji. After that’s done, a shower of moons will show up in the chat window with a prompt to activate the dark mode in settings. Users can then go to the profile page in the app and there they will find an option to enable dark mode.

It’s possible that the option has been obscured behind this trick because Facebook hasn’t officially rolled it out to all users. Some users have apparently also seen messages informing them that this mode is still a work in progress.

That would explain why there’s not a simple toggle to enable dark mode in Facebook Messenger just yet. We can expect it to surface once Facebook feels that the mode is ready for public consumption. That might be sooner rather than later given that the development work does appear to be quite far along on dark mode.

Amazon May Open A New Grocery Store Chain

It appears that Amazon is thinking about opening up a new grocery store chain. A new report claims that this chain will have dozens of locations in major cities across the United States. It’s also said to be completely separate from Amazon’s Whole Foods chain and its Amazon Go cashier-less convenience stores.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Amazon’s goal with this initiative is to establish a better foothold in the conventional grocery market that’s largely dominated by companies such as Walmart, Kroger, and Publix. The report mentions that it has already signed leases for locations in major cities such as San Francisco, Seattle, and Chicago. That’s also where both Amazon Go and Whole Foods locations are present.

Amazon may expand its grocery footprint by acquiring smaller grocery chains that have a dozen or so locations. What’s not clear right now is whether the stores in this new chain will bear the Amazon name or will they get a separate sub-brand.

The company may sell mainstream products through these stores that customers are unlikely to find at Whole Foods. The latter remains an organic-focused option that has higher prices which don’t make it competitive on the same level as a conventional grocery chain. Amazon hasn’t commented on plans for opening up a new chain of grocery stores.

Microsoft Excel Uses AI To Let You Insert Data From Picture

Data entry in spreadsheets is not something that many people enjoy doing. It can be more tedious if the data is not coming from a source which allows you to copy/paste, such as a printed receipt. Microsoft wants to take the pain out of that by relying on artificial intelligence to enable Excel to insert data from a picture.

Excel’s new insert data from picture feature will let you scan a receipt or table-type information such as a recipe into spreadsheets. It will make the whole process as simple as taking a picture.

To use this feature, users have to open Excel on their phone or tablet and tap on the “Insert data from picture” button. They have to narrow in on the data until it’s surrounded by a red border and then tap on the capture button. The sizing handles around the edges of the image can be used to crop the image to size first if required.

Excel’s AI engine will then process the image and covert it to a table automatically. Not only does it import the data but it also lets users correct any issues that it discovered during the conversion process. Once the conversion process is done, Excel will display the data neatly tabuled into the spreadsheet.

The company does mention that this is a beta feature which is only available “to a portion” of Office Insiders right now. It will continue to optimize the feature in the next few months and once it’s ready, it will be released to all Office Insiders and Office 365 subscribers.

Tesla’s Promised $35,000 Model 3 Is Finally Here

Tesla fans have long been holding out hope for the promised $35,000 base variant of the Model 3 and the wait for them ends now. The company has reduced the price of its mass-market electric car to $35,000. It has made a significant change to the way it sells cars as well.

Tesla offered only the long-range variant of the Model 3 when the car entered into production back in July 2017 and it cost $56,000. Prior to the price cut the cheapest available version started at more than $40,000. The company will now be selling the base version of the Model 3 for $35,000. It will have a range of 220 miles with a top speed of 130 miles per hour. It can do 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.6 seconds.

CEO Elon Musk also announced that there will be a new version of the car called the Model 3 Standard Range Plus. It starts at $37,000 and has a range of 240 miles in addition to an upgraded interior and slightly faster speed. Tesla is trimming expenses elsewhere to allow for this price cut. It’s now moving its sales process almost entirely online by closing most of its stores. A few stores will be kept as “galleries” and information centers but most of the retail locations will be shut down.

This will obviously result in job cuts to which Musk’s response was “I wish there was some other way to do it,” adding that “It’s a binary choice: a $35,000 car and have fewer people, or not have a $35,000 car.”

Original Resident Evil Intro Turned Into An 80s Sitcom

The intro for the original Resident Evil is something special. The cheesy acting, the low production values, and the clothing all combine to create something I still love watching. But one fan decided this video could be improved and made the whole thing into a sitcom intro.
