These Genius Wallpapers Will Flaunt The Galaxy S10’s Hole-In Display

With the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S10, Samsung has approached the design of the handset very differently from the competition who have either been using a notch to house the front-facing cameras and sensors, or relying on a popup camera mechanism. Samsung has instead opted to use a hole-in display, where there are cutouts on the display just for the cameras.

Some might argue that it looks more awkward compared to the notch, and judging from the press renders, Samsung is certainly trying to downplay the holes with wallpapers. However it seems that instead of hiding the hole, why not flaunt it? In a series of images shared by Matt B on Twitter, it shows a couple of different wallpapers that seem to embrace the camera cutouts on the handset with some cleverly placed wallpapers.

We have to say that these are absolutely genius as not only do they embrace the holes, but it also does a good job of camouflaging them as well, so it serves a dual purpose. Unfortunately we’re not sure where these wallpapers can be downloaded, but if you like what you see, you can find similar images online and perhaps try to edit or align them in such a way that will make them fit perfectly behind the cutouts.

Pokémon Sword and Shield For The Nintendo Switch Announced

Last year Nintendo released a couple of new Pokemon games for the Nintendo Switch, but for the most part they felt like a remake of older (read classic) Pokemon games, such as Pokemon Yellow. For fans who are hankering for a brand new Pokemon, Nintendo stated that such a game would be launching in 2019.

The good news for fans who have been waiting is that it looks like the game has since been officially announced in the form of Pokémon Sword and Shield. Similar to Pokemon Let’s Go! where there were two versions, these new games will be split into Sword and Shield where they are set to take place in a brand new region called Galar.

Three new Pokemon belonging to this generation were also shown off where one of them is a grass-based Pokemon called Grookey, the other a fire-based Pokemon called Scorbunny, and a water-based Pokemon called Sobble. The game also seems to feature cell-shaded graphics where it seems to be a blend between 3D graphics and also cartoony anime-style graphics.

It comes off looking pretty good, although the company did caution that what we see in the trailer isn’t the final footage. There is no set date for these new games yet, but The Pokemon Company had previously stated that the game will be everything fans have been waiting for.

Aquaman 2 Confirmed For 2022

DC’s movies have been kind of hit or miss where some have proven to be huge hits, while others have become flops. Suicide Squad and Justice League were panned by critics, but other movies such as Wonder Woman were extremely well-received, and while Aquaman’s reviews were mixed, it still managed to become the highest-grossing DC movie of all time.

This is why it doesn’t come as a surprise that a sequel for the movie has been greenlit, and now according to a report from EW, we have a date to look forward to. According to the report, Aquaman 2 will be released on the 16th of December, 2022 roughly four years after its debut back in 2018.

As expected Jason Momoa will be returning as Aquaman but it is unclear if the movie’s director, James Wan, will also be making his directorial return. However the movie is expected to be written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who was the co-writer on the first film. The movie has managed to gross $1.1 billion worldwide.

DC currently has several movies planned for the future, and the confirmation of Aquaman 2’s release date makes it the eighth DC film to have been confirmed, all of which range from release dates in 2019 up to 2022.

Photojournalist Credits His Leica Camera For Saving His Life

Being a journalist in a war-torn country is a dangerous job because while it is generally frowned upon to engage in combat with journalists who are simply trying to do their job, sometimes it cannot be helped as they can get caught in the crossfire. Italian photojournalist Gabriele Micalizzi recently found himself in such a predicament, although thankfully he walked away relatively unscathed.

According to Micalizzi who spoke to Corriere (via Leica Rumors), he has credited his Leica camera for potentially saving his life. This was because while in Syria, shrapnel from an RPG hit the lens of his camera which he had held up against his eye while taking photos. It is possible that had his camera not been in the way, he could have potentially lost his eye or worse.

“I can tell you the story now, in a corridor of San Raffaele hospital, thanking those who did everything for me. The Kurdish military, the American doctors, the Italian embassy. My Leica camera, too. If I hadn’t been holding it in front of my face, I wouldn’t be here to talk about it: in the impact it damaged my eyes, but it served as a shield. I was wearing a helmet, a bullet-proof vest, the right gear.”

In a post on Instagram, it seems that for the most part, Micalizzi is fine. He suffered lesions on his eyes and arms and still has blurry vision, which hopefully will not be permanent.

Analyst Claims The Worst Of Apple’s iPhone Sales Are Over

Earlier last month Apple announced that they would be revising their forecasts with regards to iPhone sales. This seemed like pretty bad news for the company, but notable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that the worst would soon be over for the company, and that seems to be what another analyst thinks as well.

In a report from Business Insider, UBS analyst Timothy Arcuri claims that the worst is indeed over for Apple. He cites the price cuts Apple made in China as being one of the reasons why. “While March mix is still bad, the tone in the supply chain is starting to improve and price reductions in China may be starting to clear channel inventory. Procurement estimates for XR are actually now up Q/Q in June – atypical for this late in a ‘new’ model cycle (good near-term for QRVO), but reflective of inventory burn.”

It is unclear how accurate Arcuri’s claims are as we will most likely have to wait until Apple’s next financial report to get a better idea if things have indeed improved. Apple’s CEO Tim Cook had previously cited a variety of reasons why the sale of the new iPhones aren’t going as well as they’d like.

One of those reasons is the battery replacement program in 2018 which for $29, iPhone owners could sort of breathe new life into their older devices, thus allowing them to put off replacing their iPhones for another year. Cook had also conceded that price was one of the main issues, and in an interview with Reuters hinted that they might lower the price of the iPhone in select markets affected too adversely by the strong US dollar.

Apple’s Self-Driving Division Layoffs Have Been Confirmed

For a couple of years now, it hasn’t really been much of a secret that Apple could be working on a self-driving car, or at least tech that could help self-driving cars. More recently it was suggested that due to poor iPhone sales, Apple’s budget for other projects was reduced and that they could be looking to scrap or scale back its self-driving car program.

Apple had sort of confirmed it by claiming that they were reshuffling their employees, but now we know for a fact that layoffs did indeed occur. This is according to a report from the SF Chronicle where the point to a letter sent to the California Employment Development Department confirming that 190 employees in Santa Clara and Sunnyvale who were part of the self-driving program had been laid off.

These layoffs are expected to take effect on the 16th of April and consists of engineers from a variety of backgrounds, such as program managers, hardware engineers, software engineers, and product design engineers, just to name a few. It is unclear as to what this means for Apple’s plans and if the program had been scrapped entirely, or if it could simply be put on the backburner until things are looking better.

Apple has been pretty mum about what they are working on with regards to self-driving cars, so, unfortunately, these layoffs mean that the public may never know what Apple could have been up to or what they might have developed so far.

Popular Music App TikTok Hit With $5.7 Million Fine Over Privacy Violations

TikTok is one of the more popular social media apps in the market right now. For those unfamiliar, basically it’s a music app where users film themselves lip-syncing, dancing, or acting out to various songs or sound bytes. It has gained massive popularity where the company behind TikTok actually bought out its competitor, Music.ly.

Unfortunately the company now seems to be in a bit of a bind as the FTC has since slapped them with a $5.7 million fine (via Engadget) over COPPA violations. In case you’re unfamiliar with COPPA, it’s short for Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule. These are a set of privacy rules that are designed to protect children aged under 13 who use various internet services.

According to the FTC, TikTok had violated those privacies by collecting personal information about their under-13 users without their parents’ consent, and in some cases made their profiles public. The government agency also alleges that TikTok was well-aware of these issues and how the majority of their users were aged under 13, but despite the “thousands of complaints”, the company did not do anything to address it.

The app has since introduced some measures such as an age gate that will limit data collection, but given that it’s not that difficult to lie about one’s age, we’re not sure how much help that will do.

‘Bug’ Caused Apple Music To Appear On Google Home’s App

The other day we reported that it looked as though Apple Music integration could soon be finding its way into Google Home. This is thanks to a sighting in the Google Home app in which it listed Apple Music as being available, although at that time it did not seem to work. This led to speculation that Apple Music could be coming soon to Google Home.

Unfortunately that might no longer be the case. In a report from Bloomberg, a spokesperson from Alphabet claimed that it was apparently due to a “bug” that caused Apple Music to appear in the app. The spokesperson then said, “We have nothing to announce regarding updates to Google Home.”

We’ve seen our fair share of bugs in the past but this does seem like an odd one, although since Alphabet did not bother to share the details of the bug, we’re not sure what caused it. It could be possible that Alphabet might actually be working with Apple to get Apple Music onto Google Home and this could be their way of trying to put off announcing anything until they have something more concrete.

Either way don’t get your hopes up about seeing Apple Music on Google Home anytime soon, but hey, one can always hope, right?

Apple Shipped 9.2 Million Apple Watches In Q4 2018

Apple has so far remained mum on exactly how many Apple Watches they have sold. We’re not sure why, especially in the face of multiple reviews and third-party data, all of which seem to suggest that the device is doing pretty well, so why not boast about it, right? Unfortunately the company is still keeping quiet on that front, so for now third-party data will have to do.

According to the recent numbers from Strategy Analytics (via AppleInsider), it seems that in Q4 2018, Apple had managed to ship as many as 9.2 million Apple Watches. Note that these are shipped figures, meaning that the actual number of units sold could be less, but since Apple probably as a good handle on the demand for the wearable, it could be close.

The shipment of 9.2 million also meant that Apple had managed to capture 50.7% of the market. However according to Strategy Analytics, 50.7% is actually a lot less than the previous year in 2017 where Apple reportedly commanded 60.4% of the smartwatch market. The closest company on that list is Fitbit who is sitting at 12.2%, which is actually a remarkable jump considering that in 2017 the company was at 1.7%. Samsung also seems to have managed to increase their market share from 10.6% to 11.8%.

Despite Apple seemingly losing a bit of market share, they are still very much in the lead. With various stories about how the Apple Watch has been saving lives with its new features, we imagine that this could help spur sales further.

Android Buddhist Deity To Start Preaching At Kyoto Temple

A famed temple built in Japan’s cultural capital of Kyoto by the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a warlord from the 16th century who unified Japan, to commemorate her husband will now have an Android deity preaching to the public. The Android Kannon, with its hands clasped together, adds a touch of modernity to the historical temple.

The Android Kannon is a Buddhist deity of mercy and it was unveiled to the media earlier this month at the Kodaiji temple. It will officially start preaching to the public next month.

“We are hoping that the Android Kannon will help Buddhist teachings reach the hearts of people today,” said Tensho Goto, a priest at the temple, adding that Buddhism considerably spread across the world with the emergence of Buddhist images.

The robot is named Mindar and has been programmed to deliver a sermon from the Heart Sutras in Japanese. It will also project the translated versions in English and Chinese on the screen. The android can move its arms, torso and head which have see-through mechanical parts.

This wasn’t a cheap project by any stretch of the imagination. It cost 100 million yen or just over $900,000 to build the android. It was a collaborative effort between the zen temple at Hiroshi Ishiguro who is a professor of intelligent robotics at Osaka University.
