Americans Spent More On Airbnb Compared To Hilton In 2018

Hilton is one of the largest and well-known hotel chains in the world. Airbnb has been taking business away from it and other hotel companies. The latest data shows that it may have been causing some serious headaches for hotel companies. Americans spent more on Airbnb than they did on Hilton in 2018.

The latest data from Second Measure, a company which analyzes billions of dollars in anonymized debit and credit card purchases, reveals that consumers in the country spent more money on Airbnb in 2018 than they did on Hilton and its subsidiary chains such as Embassy Suites and DoubleTree.

In fact, spending at Airbnb is almost catching up to spending at Marriott, which happens to be the largest hotel company in the world. It expanded even further in 2016 when it acquired Starwood back in 2016.

The data reveals a growth of approximately 30 percent last year in U.S. consumer spending on Airbnb. The bulk of that growth, according to Second Measure, is being driven by travelers who live in the central U.S. A third of Airbnb’s customers are from states like New York, Florida, and California.

Airbnb has also been expanding its offers to better compete with the hotel chains. It now allows customers to book boutique hotels through the platform which was primarily for people to rent out spare rooms in their home. It has also acquired HotelTonight, a last-minute hotel booking website to better compete in the mainstream market.

ISPs Told To Reveal Information They Collect On Users

The Federal Trade Commission has sent out an order to several big internet service providers in the United States, telling them to detail the data that they collect on their customers and the purpose for which it’s collected. This may signal new regulatory action from the FTC as the information may reveal patterns of abuse or otherwise concerning use of data against which states or the FTC may want to take action.

The letters for this information have been sent by the Federal Trade Commission to Google, T-Mobile, Comcast, and the fixed and wireless sub-companies of both Verizon and AT&T. These “represent a range of large and small ISPs, as well as fixed and mobile Internet providers,” said a spokesperson for the FTC.

This new push is over and above the consumer protection rules that the FTC already has in place to take action against internet service providers that are found to be abusing the privacy of their customers. The information that the FTC wants from ISPs include the categories of personal information collected, any third parties that are provided the data, how long it’s retained, how it’s aggregated, anonymized or deidentified, and more.

The agency says that it has asked the ISPs for data so that it can better “understand Internet service providers’ privacy practices in light of the evolution of telecommunications companies into vertically integrated platforms that also provide advertising-supported content.”

Google Now Helps You Book Vacation Rentals

Heading someplace nice for the summer? Google already allows you to book hotels directly through its platform and it’s now expanding this service to include vacation rentals as well. It redesigned the mobile and desktop hotel search experience last year so that users can easily find hotels by price, location, and retains. It’s expanding the hotel search experience by including a wider assortment of vacation rental properties across the globe.

Mobile users will now be able to see and book vacation rentals from different partners include HomeAway, Expedia, Hotels.com, RedAwning, Rentals United, TripAdvisor, and more. The properties, be it a beach house in Sydney or a cabin in Lake Tahoe, will surface in the hotel search experience when the vacation rentals filter is applied or users click on the relevant tip.

The search can then be narrowed using price and amenity filters. The experience will also include photos, reviews, provide rates, and availability status of the property. When you want to book, just click on the “Book” button to complete the transaction on the travel partner’s page.

All of the property information and bookings are provided by that particular partner. The company says that it will bring the vacation rentals filter to the Google Hotels desktop experience next month.
