McDonald’s Using AI To Optimize Drive-Thru Menus

The drive-thru accounts for a significant chunk of sales at McDonald’s restaurants across the globe and the company is now turning to artificial intelligence in order to drive those numbers up even further. It has acquired machine learning startup Dynamic Yield reportedly for $300 million. The technology it gets will enable it to use AI to optimize drive-thru menus.

What this means is that McDonald’s drive-thru menus will not be static in the future as they are today. The artificial intelligence technology will take into account various factors including local events, time, weather, traffic levels at the restaurant, and even what the customer is ordering to optimize the menu.

For example, if you’re ordering a sandwich, the drive-thru menu might proactively recommend fries or other side items even if you were not actively looking for them. The same tech may also promote iced coffees or the McFlurry on hot days and hot beverages when it’s cold out. If there’s a lot of traffic in the restaurant, it may suggest simpler items that are faster for employees to prepare.

McDonald’s has tested the technology at several locations in 2018 and the results have been promising so much so that it’s now going to roll out this technology to more than 1,000 locations in the next three months. The AI will ultimately be rolled out to all 14,000 U.S. locations in addition to overseas locations.

macOS Mojave 10.14.4 Adds Support For Apple News+ Subscriptions

The beta for the latest macOS update hinted that Apple might be launching a magazine subscription service. The company formally unveiled Apple News+ yesterday, its very own magazine subscription service. It would obviously be rolling it out on the Mac. Apple has released macOS Mojave 10.14.4 which brings support for Apple News+.

There are some other improvements included in this update as well. It brings Dark Mode support in Safari for websites that support custom color schemes and also streamlines website login when filling credentials with Password Autofill. Websites will only be able to show push notification prompts once the user has interacted with them.

With macOS Mojave 10.14.4, users also get support for the new second-generation AirPods. iTunes has been updated to show more editorial highlights on a single page in the Browse tab so that it’s easier for users to discover new content.

Maps will now show the Air Quality Index for the United States, the United Kingdom, and India. This update improves the quality of audio recordings in messages, supports real-time text for phone calls made through a nearby iPhone on Mac, resolves Wi-Fi connection issues that could occur after upgrading to macOS Mojave, and corrects the default screen brightness for the MacBook Air amid other tweaks.

ASUS Releases Fix For Update Tool Malware Attack

It was reported yesterday how hackers had managed to infiltrate countless ASUS systems by distributing a backdoored software update tool from the company’s own servers. The hackers digitally signed the ASUS Live Update Tool with one of the company’s own code-signing certificates before sending it to ASUS’ download servers where the backdoored tool was hosted for several months in 2018. The company today confirmed that it has rolled out a fix for the malware attack.

Hackers used the backdoor in the software update tool to send malware to users’ computers through a command and control server. It’s believed that the hackers were able to get access to the company’s own code-signing certificates through the supply chain.

ASUS said today that it has released an update to thwart this malware attack which security researchers estimate targeted more than a million Asus users. The company said that only “a small number of devices’ had been implanted with malware through this attack.

The company has also said that it’s putting in place “multiple security verification mechanisms” to ensure that something like this does not happen in the future. It has also started using an “enhanced end-to-end encryption mechanism” for this purpose and has made behind-the-scenes server system improvements to thwart similar attacks in the future. One has to wonder why ASUS never did all of this in the first place.
