It was reported last week that Uber could soon announce the acquisition of Careem, its main rival in the Middle East. The reports have turned out to be accurate as the company confirmed this morning that it’s acquiring Dubai-based Careem for $3.1 billion. The company was founded in 2012 and it has rapidly expanded in markets across the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. It developed services with the local customs in mind which led to Careem emerging as a bona fide Uber competitor in these markets.
The terms of the agreement indicate that Uber will be parting with $1.4 billion in cash to acquire Careem in addition to $1.7 in convertible notes. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and Uber expects the deal to close by the first quarter of next year.
With this acquisition, Uber is acquiring all of Careem’s mobility, delivery, and payments business across the Middle East region including other major markets like Pakistan, Egypt, and Jordan.
Once the deal is closed, Careem will continue to operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Uber under its own brand. It will not be merged with Uber proper. Careem co-founder and CEO Mudassir Sheikha will remain in the driving seat of the business.

History was due to be made on March 29th, 2019 as NASA had scheduled the first all-female spacewalk for that date. This would be the first time in decades of human spaceflight that an all-female crew would venture outside the International Space Station for a mission. It was unintentional but historic, nonetheless. However, NASA has had to cancel the all-female spacewalk because of what’s essentially a wardrobe issue.
The all-female composition of this crew was unintentional. NASA said that it recognized the historical significance of astronauts Anne McClain and Christina Koch going on an all-female mission but pointed out that the spacewalk “was not orchestrated to be this way.” Their mission was to replace the batteries on the outside of the International Space Station this Friday. NASA has now decided that McClain’s place will be taken by astronaut Nick Hague.
NASA says that this decision has been made because of the types of space suits that are available on the ISS. After completing an earlier spacewalk, McClain found out that she’s best suited to wearing a spacesuit that has a “medium-size hard upper torso” instead of a large-sized one.
A spokesperson for NASA said that there are at least two medium-sized spacesuit torsos on the ISS but only one of them is going to be ready for the spacewalk on March 29th. It was thus decided that Koch and Hague will wear suits that are already prepared instead of reconfiguring the suits before Friday as it can be quite a labor-intensive job.

Uber introduced its Ride Pass monthly subscription service to make riders cheaper in October last year. It was launched in five cities initially and provided subscribers with flat rates on all UberX and UberPool trips taken during the month. It locked in consistent prices for rides that subscribers can take anywhere in a supported city at any time of the day in exchange for a monthly fee. This service is now being expanded to 16 additional cities.
Uber announced the expansion today, adding that riders in select cities will also receive additional benefits on e-bikes and scooters with their Ride Pass which includes 30 free minutes a day with JUMP. Prices for the Ride Pass service start at $14.99 but increase to $24.99 in markets where the service offers scooters and e-bikes.
According to Uber, Ride Pass subscribers stand to save up to 15 percent on their overall monthly expense on the ride-hailing service. The fares they get won’t increase based on external events such as surge pricing as well. Ride Pass also has no limit to the number of rides that subscribers can take every month as long as they’re subscribed to the service.
The new markets include New York City, Dallas, San Diego, Seattle, San Antonio, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Orange County, Baltimore, New Orleans, Nashville, Portland, Raleigh-Durham, St. Louis, Jacksonville, and Memphis. The five launch cities include Los Angeles, Austin, Orlando, Denver, and Miami.
