People Are Waiting Longer Than Ever To Upgrade Their Phones

Flagship smartphones have continued to get expensive over the past few years. One would easily cost you north of $1,000 now and if you opt for one of those fancy upcoming foldable smartphones, be prepared to spend over $2,000 on a phone that will be outdated in a couple of years. No wonder people are waiting to upgrade their phones longer than ever before.

Verizon says that the upgrade rate for customers on its network fell to a record low in the previous quarter. Since phones receive incremental upgrades each year, most consumers don’t feel the need to upgrade the very next year. They may also wait and see how long it takes for 5G to be properly rolled out before buying a new handset that supports the network technology.

Verizon Chief Financial Officer Matt Ellis expects that the replacement rates will continue to be down throughout the rest of this year. This trend started a few years ago when carried discontinued their deep discounts on handsets in return for two year contracts. As devices got more expensive, they started offering installment plans for phones.

That being said, companies like Apple, Samsung, Huawei, and other continue to pump out multiple new models every year as they refuse to concede any ground to their rivals. The question is, whether there are enough customers out there to actually make it worth the effort.

US Army’s New Night Vision Tech Will Let Soldiers Shoot Around Corners

The US Army has been tested advanced night vision technology which will enable soldiers to shoot around corners even when their visibility is impaired on the battlefield. The technology is being put through its final round of user testing before it enters full-rate production and deployment in the field later this year.

The Enhanced Night Vision Goggles – Binocular (ENVG-B) will be put to the test at the last of ten limited user events. The first unit to deploy with this system is thought to be an armored brigade combat team which is due to deploy to South Korea later this year in the fall.

These new night vision goggles feature dual-tubed binoculars which provide improved depth perception and increase situational awareness. There are white phosphorous tubes for higher resolution compared to the conventional green glow of night vision goggles. The improved thermal capabilities will let the soldiers see through fog, dust or smoke.

The new goggles can be directly connected to the Family of Weapon Sights-Individual for Rapid Target Acquisition. The picture-in-picture setup will thus enable soldiers to point their weapon around the corner to either observe or fire on targets without leaving their position.

The Army adds that the technology “enables Soldiers to detect, recognize and engage targets accurately from any carry position and with significantly reduced exposure to enemy fire.” Augmented reality is also an option for these goggles which will enable the Army to use them as a virtual reality platform for training.

Verizon 5G And Broadband Customers To Get YouTube TV

Verizon is working with Google to provide its internet customers with streaming media. It has confirmed that both wireless 5G home and Fios broadband customers will receive YouTube TV, the company’s standalone online TV streaming service. It confirms an earlier report about Verizon wanting to partner up with Google to provide more streaming options to its customers.

Verizon 5G Home and Fios broadband customers will be able to view YouTube TV on any platform they choose. The service will give them access to live TV from major networks like CBS and Fox in addition to cable stations such as CNN, ESPN, and more.

With this partnership, Verizon’s customers can add the service to their bundles but it’s not known at this point in time if they will receive the option to subscribe to YouTube at a lower price. A YouTube TV subscription normally costs $50 per month and it provides access to 70 channels with three simultaneous streams, and a personal DVR that has no storage limits.

Since Verizon does mention in its press release that it will offer “unique, high-value YouTube TV promotions to customers across platforms,” this does leave the door open for some cost savings for Big Red’s 5G home and Fios customers.
