There’s always a lot of activity on Twitter right around election time, be it the United States or anywhere across the globe where the service is available. Twitter is doing its bit to control the spread of misleading information, particularly that related to elections, on its platform. It’s now offering a dedicated report option for misleading election tweets.
The tool will be available starting with the ongoing elections in Indian and the upcoming European Union elections. Starting tomorrow, Twitter users in India will be able to report tweets which they feel are trying to mislead voters. This may be misinformation about the date or location of polling stations, inaccurate claims about identity requirements for voting, etc.
The tweets can be reported by tapping on the arrow menu and choosing the “It’s misleading about voting” option. The tool will be available in all European Union member states on April 29th as the EU parliament elections are due to take place next month. In a blog post about this feature, Twitter explains that this option is going to be available in the list of available choices for reporting tweets a week after each election ends.
Twitter will also roll out this feature to other elections across the globe as and when they happen throughout the year. It didn’t say which countries will be prioritized for this tool.
