Google Acknowledges That Pixel Smartphone Sales Are Declining

At the start of the Nexus program, the idea behind it was to create a relatively affordable Android smartphone that offered users a stock/vanilla Android experience. This is versus the more expensive flagships from the likes of Samsung, LG, HTC, and so on that came with highly-tweaked versions of Android, and not necessarily for the better.

However, over the years we’ve seen how Google has started to increase the price of their Google-branded smartphones, where last year’s Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL were the most expensive of the entire series. Perhaps that wasn’t such a good idea after all, because Google’s CFO Ruth Porat has since acknowledged that despite launching the Pixel 3 lineup in 2018, the company has actually sold fewer Pixel phones compared to the previous year.

According to Porat, this was apparently due to “industry-wide pressure on high-end phones”, but she did not elaborate what that meant. Some have taken this as a form of admission that maybe Google’s decision to price the highest-end Pixel 3 XL smartphone close to $1,000 wasn’t the best idea.

That being said, Google is not alone in feeling this as Apple themselves have also found that the cheaper iPhone XR is actually outselling its higher-end siblings, despite it “compromising” on certain features. Could this be a sign that the Pixel 4 will be more reasonably priced? We suppose we’ll have to wait and see, but in the meantime, Google is expected to launch its budget-friendly Pixel 3a smartphones next week.

OnePlus 7 Won’t Come With A Notch

Based on the leaked renders that we’ve been seeing, it seems that the company will not be including a notch in the OnePlus 7. Instead, the company will be adopting a popup camera. Wondering how true those rumors and renders are? Turns out that OnePlus has more or less confirmed it.

In an ad taken out in the New York Times, OnePlus has teased some of the upcoming features of the phone, one of which is the fact that it will not come with a notch in its display. It is an interesting turn of events as previously, OnePlus had encouraged their customers to embrace the notch, but now it looks like the company is done.

The ad taken out in the paper also seems to poking fun at the competition as well. One of which seems to be a jab at Apple with the “no random music” tagline, which could be referencing that time Apple thought it was a good idea to include music predownloaded onto the iPhones of their customers.

There could also be a dig made at Samsung where the tagline reads, “No $2,000 price tag”, which could be a jab at the Samsung Galaxy Fold which launched with a price tag of $1,980. Of course, whether or not OnePlus can walk the walk remains to be seen, but check back with on the 14th of May where we should have all the official details.

2019 iPhones Could Finally Ship With An 18W Charger

In case you didn’t know, Apple’s iPhones in recent years have started to support fast charging. Unfortunately, Apple’s method of fast-charging is an expensive one as it means that customers will need to buy a separate, more high-powered charger (unless you happen to own the 2018 iPad Pro or a MacBook computer).

It was rumored last year that Apple could start to ship an 18W charger with the iPhone XS and XS Max, but clearly that did not pan out. Now according to a report from Mac Otakara, the publication claims that Apple will be doing that for the 2019 iPhones where the handsets will come bundled with an 18W charger.

In addition to the charger, Apple will also start to supply a USB-C to Lighting cable which will then connect to the charging brick. This also means that unlike the 2018 iPad Pros that adopted USB-C over Lightning, it seems that Apple won’t be so quick to use the technology for their iPhones just yet.

That being said, it’s not really an issue and actually the USB-C end will be more useful since Apple has done away with older USB ports in its new MacBook computers, a change that we wouldn’t be surprised if it extended to the iMac in the future as well.
