Scientists Create An Artificial Material With ‘Lifelike’ Traits

These days scientists are getting a lot better at creating more humanoid-looking robots, but for the most part, this is mostly an aesthetics thing. However, it seems that in the future, machines could not just look more lifelike, but could also potentially start to exhibit lifelike tendencies as well.

This is thanks to the creation of a new artificial material by the engineers at Cornell University. Dubbed DASH (DNA-based Assembly and Synthesis of Hierarchical), this material has been designed to sport lifelike traits, which includes metabolism, self-assembly, and organization. What this means is that in the future, machines could have the potential to self-reproduce.

According to Shogo Hamada, the lead author on the study, “The designs are still primitive, but they showed a new route to create dynamic machines from biomolecules. We are at a first step of building lifelike robots by artificial metabolism. Even from a simple design, we were able to create sophisticated behaviors like racing. Artificial metabolism could open a new frontier in robotics.”

While we have to admit that it sounds rather exciting, we’re not sure we’re too thrilled at the idea of robots being able heal themselves and self-replicate one day. We’re not alone in our concerns as we have seen in the past, several prominent people from the science and tech industry have expressed their interest in avoiding a Terminator-like future.

LG Could Halt Smartphone Production In Korea For Somewhere Cheaper

As expected of a MNO such as LG, the company has production plants and factories all over the world. However, a report from Korean publication Yonhap News Agency claims that LG could be considering halting the production of its smartphones over in Korea where they might try to seek out more affordable alternatives.

LG has yet to confirm anything, so take it with a grain of salt for now, but it does serve to highlight how the company seems to be struggling in the smartphone market. According to the reports, LG’s mobile business has apparently been losing money for at least seven quarters now, so by moving it to more affordable countries such as Vietnam could help curb their losses.

Now, this isn’t to say that LG is in trouble or that they are quitting smartphones entirely, but rather they are simply shifting operations from their home country to another. This isn’t a surprising move as companies such as Apple have long outsourced their production to countries such as China.

LG already has factories outside of Korea, which includes China, Brazil, Vietnam, and India, although its Korean factories are the ones that handle its higher-end mobile devices, such as the recently launched LG G8 ThinQ and the LG V50 ThinQ.

Pirated Copies Of Avengers: Endgame Have Already Leaked Online

Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame has already been released in some parts of the world, such as China, and unfortunately, it looks like Marvel has a piracy problem on their hands because according to a report from TorrentFreak, it seems that pirated copies of the movie have already made their way online.

What’s ironic is that the decision to release the movie early in China was to combat piracy, where presumably the idea is that if moviegoers could see the movie before everyone else, they wouldn’t need to turn to piracy. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. That being said, TorrentFreak does not expect that this pirated copy will have too much of an impact on Marvel and Disney’s bottomline.

This is because based on what they’ve seen, the version leaked online is terrible. According to their source, “The image flickers constantly throughout. It’s semi-rotated and is littered throughout with watermarks for a gambling site that spin around the screen.” This means that unless you really, really don’t care, chances are most would probably just skip this pirated copy in favor of watching it in the cinema.

So far Avengers: Endgame has been raking in money hand over fist, where it opened in China with $90 million in sales.

AT&T’s CEO Anticipates 5G Plans Could Be Tier-Based And More Expensive

It goes without saying that many are excited to see what kind of changes and improvements 5G could be bringing to the table. As it stands, LTE is pretty fast, but tests have shown that 5G is faster. Unfortunately, it also seems that 5G plans could potentially be more expensive, or at least that’s what AT&T’s CEO Randall Stephenson is anticipating.

During AT&T’s earnings call, Stephenson said that he anticipates that there is a chance 5G mobile plans could more closely resemble broadband internet plans versus current LTE plans. For example, with LTE plans, it is priced based on how much data you need, but other than that, a customer on a 1GB data plan versus a customer on a 50GB data plan will experience the same speeds.

However, with 5G, Stephenson said, “I will be very surprised if, as we move into wireless, the pricing regime in wireless doesn’t look something like the pricing regime you see in fixed line. If you can offer a gig speed, there are some customers that are willing to pay a premium for 500 meg to a gig speed, and so forth. So I expect that to be the case. We’re two to three years away from seeing that play out.”

This isn’t to say that this is how AT&T plans to price their 5G plans, but if Stephenson’s comments are anything to go by, it looks like adopting 5G won’t come cheap.

The Nintendo Switch Has Surpassed The N64 In Lifetime Sales

Nintendo’s future felt a bit murky during the era of the Wii U, where Nintendo was attempting to build on the success of the Wii with an updated model with newer features. Unfortunately, it never quite took and it felt like Nintendo might just drop out of the console race entirely. However, the company managed to successfully rally with the Nintendo Switch.

Not only has the Switch sold pretty well, but it has also managed to surpass the Wii U’s lifetime sales and there are no signs that it is slowing down. This is because according to Nintendo’s latest financials, it has been revealed that the Switch has also managed to surpass another Nintendo console, this time in the form of the N64.

The Switch’s lifetime sales is currently at 34.74 million units sold, which is an increase of 2.47 million units from the previous quarter, allowing the console to overtake the N64. This means that the next Nintendo console on the list is the SNES which managed 49.1 million units over its lifetime, but it remains to be seen if Nintendo can manage to squeeze out another 15 million units.

That being said, there is a good chance that they could. This is because there are rumors that Nintendo could have a cheaper Switch model in the works that might launch by the end of June, as well as an upgraded model that is set for a launch this year, both of which could help drive the sales of the Switch family.

Samsung Galaxy View 2 Officially Announced

Last year it was reported that Samsung could be working on a successor to its massive Galaxy View tablet. It turns out the rumors were true because Samsung has since officially unveiled the Galaxy View 2 where it will be available for purchase through AT&T.

In terms of its specs, there’s really not much to shout about. According to AT&T, they told Engadget that the tablet will be packing a mid-range Exynos 7884 octa-core processor with 3GB of RAM and a 5MP rear-facing camera. While those are unimpressive specs, we imagine that the selling point will be its Full HD 17.3-inch display.

This means that while it won’t be as portable compared to smaller tablets, it will make for a good multimedia device in your home. It also packs a 12,000mAh battery that should last you quite a while. Since the tablet is available for purchase through AT&T, there will be LTE connectivity which means that you can use it even when WiFi isn’t available.

Unfortunately, the Galaxy View 2 will not come cheap. It is priced at $37 a month over a 20-month installment plan, making it $740 over the entire duration. However, if you are still interested, the tablet will be available for purchase starting from the 26th of April.
