Google Has An AI That Helps Clean Up Trashy Videos On YouTube

YouTube is home to millions of videos due to the ease of uploading them to its platform where anyone can upload a video at anytime they want. However, more often than not, many of us have probably encountered instances where videos end up being clickbait or are misleading, leaving us frustrated in the process.

For those who are wondering what Google is doing to curb such videos, a recent report from Bloomberg has revealed that Google actually has an AI that runs behind-the-scenes where its job is to clean up all these so-called “trashy videos”. The company has recently confirmed the existence of the tool, where they say that they initially rolled it out as a test in 2015 but only deployed it in earnest in 2017 following incidents involving inappropriate videos surfacing on YouTube Kids.

According to a Google spokeswoman, “We started testing a clickbait classifier in 2015, which we rolled out broadly in 2016 in order to improve users’ experience. It looks for titles or thumbnails that misrepresent the content of the video or include offensive language, among other things.”

There were, of course, financial incentives to help clean up YouTube, where a better curation of videos and less trashy and clickbaity content would encourage users to keep using its platform, thus generating more ad revenue for Google and its creators.

Firewatch’s Publisher Just Created Their Own Handheld Console Called ‘Playdate’

When it comes to handheld gaming consoles, it’s really hard to beat the likes of Nintendo and their DS-series of handheld consoles. However, it seems that Nintendo could be getting a challenger in the form of a console called Playdate. This device was created by Panic, better known as the publisher of popular indie title Firewatch.

The Playdate console is rather unique in terms of its design, where it actually features a small crank on its side. What does the crank do? Basically it acts as a controller where there will be some games played on the console that will actually be able to take advantage of it. We suppose it is rather clever, although we are a bit worried about it breaking off during transit.

The console itself will feature a 2.7-inch monochrome LCD from Sharp with a resolution of 400×200, meaning that this console is not designed to be a high-powered gaming console. There will be a D-pad and two physical buttons used to control its games. Speaking of games, Panic has opted for a rather unique method of game distribution.

The console will come preloaded with one game but there will be an entire “season” worth of games, bringing the total to 12. These games are expected to be released on a weekly basis until the season is complete. The console is priced at $149 which includes the cost of the 12 games, with pre-orders expected to open later in the year and a release set for 2020.

Google Search, Maps, Assistant Will Soon Let You Order Food Directly

One of the things Google has been working on over the years is to make its products and services easy to use and indispensable. What we’ve seen Google do is try to make all kinds of information readily available right from the jump, thus saving users precious time when they are browsing the web.

For example, if you wanted to know currency conversion rate, you could Google it directly without having to go to another website. Now Google is taking that convenience and applying it to food delivery, where users will soon be able to order their food directly from Google Search, Google Maps, and Google Assistant.

According to Google, “Now you can use Google Search, Maps or the Assistant to order food from services like DoorDash, Postmates, Delivery.com, Slice, and ChowNow, with Zuppler and others coming soon. Look out for the “Order Online” button in Search and Maps when you search for a restaurant or type of cuisine.”

In the past, we have seen Google offer up similar conveniences for other services. For example, when searching for a location on Google Maps, users could also hail themselves a ride from a service such as Uber (although it seems that feature has since been deprecated).

SpaceX finally launches 60 Starlink satellites into orbit

We, and especially SpaceX, probably imagine rocket launches that take off any time just like planes. Reality, however, is that such launches are at the mercy of the weather even more than planes are. That’s pretty much the reason why SpaceX postponed the launch of its ambitious satellites twice. They say third time’s a charm and, finally, 60 satellites from … Continue reading
