Amazon is reportedly interested in buying Boost Mobile

If helping to create a competitor is a necessary condition to get the Sprint/T-Mobile deal done, then perhaps Amazon can help. A report from Reuters suggests the retailer is interested in buying Boost Mobile from the combo, particularly because it wo…

Amazon Could Be Considering Taking Boost Mobile Off T-Mobile And Sprint’s Hands

As one of the conditions of T-Mobile and Sprint’s merger to be approved, they would need to sell off one of their subsidiaries, Boost Mobile (currently owned by T-Mobile). It was previously unclear as to who might be interested in acquiring the company, but if a recent report from Reuters is accurate, it seems that it might be none other than Amazon.

The report claims that Amazon is interested in taking Boost Mobile off T-Mobile’s hands because it seems that by doing so, it would allow them to stay on T-Mobile’s network for at least six years. The company is also reportedly interested in seeing if any of the wireless spectrum could be divested, although what Amazon might want to do with it remains to be seen.

In the past, we have seen Amazon express interest in mobile where the company has attempted to create their own mobile devices, such as tablets and smartphones. While the Amazon Fire tablets were pretty well-received, the same cannot be said for their smartphone. Perhaps by acquiring Boost Mobile, it would allow Amazon to expand their reach into the mobile space in a different sort of way.

As it stands, there several conditions that T-Mobile and Sprint need to meet in order for the US Department of Justice to sign off on this merger. One of those conditions is that they would need to help lay the groundwork that would allow a competitor to fill their spot, and it seems that Amazon potentially acquiring Boost Mobile could be one way to approach it.

MacBook Pro Reportedly Explodes During ‘Normal Use’

Usually, we hear reports about smartphones exploding, and less with laptops. Unfortunately, there is a first time for everything because according to the reports, it seems that at least one of Apple’s MacBook Pros has caught on fire and exploded. This is according to a DJ calling himself White Panda who recounted the details on a post on Reddit.

According to White Panda, “Yesterday afternoon my MacBook Pro exploded during normal use. It was on my lap, plugged in, and suddenly started to spew smoke out both sides. I quickly placed it on the floor where it popped, the smoke increased, and it caught fire. Toxic smelling smoke filled my house triggering smoke and CO alarms.”

It is unclear as to what might have caused the problem, but White Panda has since reached out to Apple who has yet to do anything about it. The service rep first told him that they would need to wait at least 24 hours while the laptop is kept inside of a fire-proof safe. Later when he called for a follow-up, he was told that the issue had been “escalated” and that he would hear from Apple in the next five days.

This is a pretty rare occurrence and that there could have been a number of issues that could have caused it, ranging from improper use, third-party chargers, or simply a faulty battery. As White Panda notes, it could have been worse, like what would have happened had this taken place on a plane? In any case, we’ll keep a lookout for more updates to this situation, but hopefully, Apple is taking steps to rectify this ASAP.

This Sensor-Packed Glove Could Help Computers Identify Objects By Touch

Built into our hands are nerves which sends signals to the brain to let it know what we’re touching. For example, it lets our brain know if an object we touched is cold, is hard, software, sharp, and so on. However, how does one convey those kinds of information to a computer who does not come with similar nerves?

According to the researchers at MIT, perhaps the answer could be in simulating nerves, in which they have since created a sensor-packed glove that can help teach computers how to identify objects by touch. Dubbed the “scalable tactile glove”, this is a glove that contains 550 tiny sensors embedded into it, with each sensor designed to record pressure signals.

This means that depending on how we grasp an object and where the various pressure points are, that information could be used to help computers identify objects. Ultimately, it would allow the computer to classify objects and predict its weight without need for visual input. So far, the researchers have had some success with the glove, where it was able to identify a dataset they compiled with 76% accuracy. This is also more efficient and cost-effective compared to other systems, where this glove was made using available materials for only $10.

Ultimately, this information could be used to help train computers on how to hold certain objects by understanding how we, as humans, hold them. This means that in the future, it could lead to more nimble prosthetic limbs, or create prosthetics that are designed for specific tasks.
