Justice Department Comes Out Against T-Mobile And Sprint Merger

The proposed merger of T-Mobile and Sprint now faces a major hurdle. The Antitrust Division at the United States Justice Department has come out against the deal. It has recommended that the law enforcement agency block the merger between these two major U.S. carriers. This, according to a news report.

CNBC reports that the antitrust division staff of the Justice Department has recommended that a lawsuit be filed to block the pending $26 billion merger between T-Mobile and Sprint. A final decision is yet to be made, though. They seem to fear that T-Mobile will have less of an incentive to aggressive cut prices and improve service after the merger goes through in order to compete with its rivals Verizon and AT&T.

It will be up to the political appointees at the department to make that call, which are led by antitrust division chief Makan Delrahim. Two sources mentioned in the report say that the Justice Department is likely to make a final decision on the matter in a month.

Even though staff at the Justice Department appear to be against the merger, the Federal Communications Commission said earlier this week that it had reached an agreement in principle to allow the merger after it was agreed that Sprint would sell its Boost Mobile prepaid brand.

Sony Will Keep Making Smartphones But Only For Four Markets

Sony’s Xperia smartphone business has been losing money for quite some time now. Despite rumors that the company was looking to give up on the business altogether, Sony has reiterated its commitment to making smartphones, but will only be selling them in four markets going forward. It’s exiting all of the other markets for a more sustainable approach to the business.

Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said that the Xperia smartphone business is a pivotal part of Sony’s identity which is entertainment focused. “We see smartphones as hardware for entertainment and a component necessary to make our hardware brand sustainable,” pointing out that younger generations no longer watch TV, “their first touch point is smartphone.”

Sony used to be a big player in the smartphone market but that’s not the case anymore. It only shipped 6.5 million units in the previous financial year and incurred a loss of almost $900 million. The company confirmed at its investor day event this week that it will “defocus” on all but four markets for its smartphone business which include Hong Kong, Europe, Japan, and Taiwan.

It will no longer be focusing too much on markets like the Middle East and Australia. Whether or not this renewed focus for the smartphone business will achieve the desired results is another matter entirely.

Uber Eats May Offer Unlimited Delivery Pass For $9.99

If you rely on Uber Eats for most of your meals you may notice that the delivery fees can add up rather quickly. To provide more flexibility to regular customers, it appears that the ride-hailing company’s food delivery service will soon offer customers an unlimited free delivery pass. It will be called the Uber Eats Pass and will cost $9.99.

The Uber Eats Pass hasn’t been officially announced but the company has been working on it. App reverse engineering specialist Jane Manchun Wong, who has found many unreleased features in different apps, has discovered this as well.

Customers who pay $9.99 per month for the pass won’t be charged delivery fee for their orders. Given that Uber’s service fee on orders can normally be 15 percent of the order cost, they do stand to save a fair bit of money since that cost often works out to $5 per order.

Therefore, Uber Eats customers who tend to use the service frequently for meal deliveries will be able to save a fair bit of money. This move will certainly help the company build loyalty in the intensely competitive food delivery space.

Uber Eats hasn’t confirmed at this point, though, precisely when it’s going to start selling the Uber Eats Pass to customers.

League Of Legends Could Arrive On Smartphones

League of Legends is an immensely popular MOBA title that’s yet to arrive on mobile devices. That’s said to change in the not too distant future according to a report. Riot, the developer of League of Legends, is reportedly working with its parent company Tencent on a mobile version of its popular game.

Reuter reports that Riot and Tencent have been working on an iOS and Android version of League of Legends for over a year now. However, it may not arrive this year. The report mentions that the mobile version of League of Legends may not be released before 2020.

The report mentions that Tencent had initially suggested a mobile version of League of Legends to Riot several years ago but the developer had turned that proposal down. Tencent later released Honor of Kings, its own mobile MOBA, in 2015. The game did well in China but didn’t get that much traction in the west where it had been launched as Arena of Valor.

A mobile version of the game will certainly help Riot significantly expand the game’s footprint across Asia where people tend to favor mobile gaming more compared to PC or console gaming. League of Legends fans in other markets will simply be able to get their fix while they’re on the move.

Apple Pay Express Transit Integration Debuts In Portland

iPhone and Apple Watch owners in the United States can now use the Express Transit functionality of their devices for the first time in the United States. Portland has become the first city in the entire country to offer integration for the Apple Pay Express Transit feature. They will be able to use it to board the TriMet and C-Tran buses, MAX light rail trains, and the Portland Streetcar in the Portland-Vancouver area.

Apple Pay Express Transit is available in other cities across the globe, including cities in Japan and China. Portland has became the first city in the United States to offer integration for this feature.

TriMet and C-Tran have confirmed the immediate Apple Wallet integration of the Hop Fastpass, the app-enabled version of the pass to be precise, which is the ubiquitous transit fare card in the Portland-Vancouver area.

Hop Fastpass has support for the Express Transit technology which means that iPhone and Apple Watch owners can make touchless transactions on terminals without having to unlock or even wake up their device. It would really speed up things during rush hour particularly.

“Apple Pay transforms everyday experiences and we’re thrilled Portland-Vancouver residents will now be able to go quickly through their daily commute with just their iPhone and Apple Watch,” said Apple Pay boss Jennifer Bailey.

OnePlus 3 And 3T Finally Get Android 9 Pie Update

It’s not common for Android devices to get more than two major OS updates. So when a device is released, it will only be supported for two major OS updates in most cases. There have been deviations from the norm in a few cases but the two year cutoff is more or less the norm in the industry. You can imagine how happy OnePlus would have made its customers when it announced that it would update the OnePlus 3 and 3T with Android 9 Pie. The company has followed through on that promise today.

The OnePlus 3 and 3T are now receiving their Android 9 Pie update today. This is the third major Android OS update for the device. The OnePlus 3 series was released by the company in 2016. It’s now rolling out Android 9 Pie for both devices.

The OxygenOS 9.0.2 firmware update is now rolling out for the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T across the globe. It brings all of the features that are part and parcel of Android 9. This includes a new user interface, Google Lens support in the camera for an improved image recognition experience, an enhanced Do Not Disturb mode, and a lot more. The firmware update also brings the April 2019 Android security patch.

OnePlus is rolling out Android 9 Pie in stages for the OnePlus 3 and 3T. It will take a couple of days before the update becomes available for all users.
