Texas To Ban Red Light Cameras

Texas will soon become the 11th state in the country to ban red light cameras. The state Senate has already approved the House Bill 1631 by a 23 to 8 vote last week. Only the Governor Greg Abbott is now required to give his assent to the bill before it can formally become the law of the land. His assent is essentially a done deal since the governor had campaigned on the issue last year.

What red light cameras do is that they automatically capture a picture when a driver blows through a traffic stop. They’re then sent a citation in the mail which costs offenders $75. According to reports, these cameras earned the city of Dallas about $5.8 million just last year.

Abbott had campaigned against red light cameras when he was up for re-election in November last year. He cited studies which suggested that these cameras can increase the risk of accidents where they’re deployed and that there are also “constitutional issues” related to their use.

24 states currently have red light cameras deployed within their borders but 10 of those states have already banned their use. Texas will become the 11th state to do that once the bill is signed into law by the governor.

Sony Launches Studio To Create Movies Out Of PlayStation Games Itself

Sony has had to work with other media companies when it wanted to make shows based on its vast library of PlayStation games. The company is now switching gears by setting up its own studio which will allow Sony to quickly adapt its PlayStation games into TV shows and movies on its own. This new division is called PlayStation Productions.

PlayStation Productions is overseen by Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Chairman of Worldwide Studios Shawn Layden. The studio will be tasked with developing and producing projects that are based on Sony’s vast library of PlayStation games.

“We’ve got 25 years of game development experience and that’s created 25 years of great games, franchises and stories,” Layden told The Hollywood Reporter, adding that the company feels that now is a good time to consider other media opportunities across film, television or streaming.

“Instead of licensing our IP out to studios, we felt the better approach was for us to develop and produce for ourselves,” says Asad Qizilbash, who heads PlayStation Productions. He does have a point since Sony owns more than 100 digital gaming properties so it has plenty of content to mine for as it sets about creating new movies and TV shows.

“We don’t have to rush to market. We don’t have a list of ‘X number of titles must be done in this year.’ None of that,” says Layden. PlayStation Productions will work in collaboration with Sony Studios to develop projects that are up to the quality of the video game that they’re based on.

Pandora Releases A New App For Mac

If you have been wishing for a Pandora desktop app, your wish has come true today, provided that you use a Mac. The internet radio service has released a new Pandora for Mac app today. Don’t worry, there’s going to be a version for Windows as well. Pandora says that it’s going to be released for Windows in the near future.

The desktop app will enable users to access the internet radio service without having to deal with a separate browser window. The app itself has a very clean interface that’s very mobile-inspired and puts recommendation tools in the spotlight.

There are some new features as well that are exclusive to the desktop app. They include on-screen notifications, keyboard playback controls, and the controls for Pandora Modes, a feature which was launched in March this year.

The app isn’t overflowing with features which is actually a good thing. Everything is laid out in a very simple manner with the essential features all being within easy reach. It’s a refreshingly clutter free app that puts the focus squarely on the core internet radio service.

Pandora for Mac is now available for download. The Windows version of this app should arrive in the not too distant future.
