Intel’s Ambient Display Concept Shows Apple How Touch Bar Should Have Been Done

When Apple introduced the Touch Bar to its MacBook Pro lineup, it was supposed to be a game changer in terms of how we used our laptops. Unfortunately, many still seem to largely prefer having a row of function keys instead of a OLED strip, although this isn’t to say that it is completely useless.

However, at Computex 2019, Intel has cooked up a concept which shows Apple how it should have been done. Dubbed the Intel Ambient PC, this is a concept laptop in which Intel has placed an OLED strip on the front outer portion of the laptop where the lid closes. With this OLED screen, it will be able to show laptop users additional information without having to open their computer.

For example, users could use it to show information such as their next calendar appointments, upcoming reminders, and it seems that it could even be used to control music playback. The concept shown off also seems to be integrated with Alexa where users could summon Alexa without having to open their laptops.

Unfortunately, this is only a concept and we are unsure if there are plans for computer makers to introduce a similar concept to their laptops. We are also unsure how useful this would be, but at a glance, we reckon it does hold more potential compared to what Apple’s Touch Bar feature can do.

Exploding Stars Could Have Been The Reason Why Humans Learned To Walk

There is a lot about our physiological makeup that is evidence of our ability to adapt to our surroundings. For example, have you ever considered why as humans we walk on our two legs instead of walking on all fours? Or why we even have legs instead of a fin? Turns out, it seems that exploding stars could have been the reason why humans have learned to walk.

According to researchers at the University of Kansas, they have published a study which suggests a possible reason as to why our species, learned to walk. They theorize that about 2.6 million years ago, stars exploded within the range of our planet and due to the cosmic energy that was unleashed, it resulted in extreme weathers, such as lightning strikes, which in turn caused wildfires and turned forests into grasslands.

Why this matters is because, in the very, very early days, our human ancestors were known as hominins who swung from tree to tree to get around. However, as we stated, the wildfires resulted in their habitat being destroyed, thus forcing them to adapt and find new ways of getting around, which resulted in walking.

According to Adrian Melott, the study author and professor emeritus of physics and astronomy at the University of Kansas, “It is thought there was already some tendency for hominins to walk on two legs, even before this event. But they were mainly adapted for climbing around in trees. After this conversion to savanna, they would much more often have to walk from one tree to another across the grassland, and so they become better at walking upright. It’s thought this conversion to savanna contributed to bipedalism as it became more and more dominant in human ancestors.”

Researchers Want To Develop A Toilet That Can Vaporize Your Poo

If you live in a developed country with access to running water, you probably don’t give too much thought to where your poo goes. You do your business, flush the toilet, and then it becomes someone else’s problem. However, in developing countries, sanitation can a big problem.

However, a company based in New Zealand is hoping to solve that problem by creating a toilet that will microwave your poo until it disappears, thus solving the issue of running water and where to dispose of your waste. The company, dubbed Scion, is being funded by none other than the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, who have in the past also helped fund the project that turned human waste into actual drinkable water.

The process of vaporizing your poo is known as wet oxidation, which takes your waste, puts it under pressure, add oxygen, and heat it till it gets to 200 degrees celsius. This eventually turns it into carbon dioxide and water. This isn’t a new technique as wet oxidation is being used in the mining and sewage treatment industry, but in this instance, Scion is hoping to bring it into homes.

According to Daniel Gapes, one of the engineers working on the project, “We get to flush here and it gets out of our household and treated and discharged into the environment and we’re removed from the issue so we don’t have to handle it personally or live amongst it. In a large part of the developing world that’s not the case. Their proximity to their waste is constant and the risk of disease is high.”

Ekasbo’s Matebot may be the cutest cat robot yet created

If Shrek saw Matebot, no amount of sad-eyes could win him back to Puss in Boots’ side. Created by Shenzhen-based robotics company Ekasbo, Matebot looks like a black and white cartoon cat and responds to your touch by wiggling its ears, changing the expression in its big LED eyes and tilting its head.

Built with voice recognition, infrared technology and seven moving parts, the Matebot is designed to serve as an interactive companion, including for people who can’t keep pets, creator Zhang Meng told TechCrunch at Computex in Taiwan.

The Matebot is controlled with a smartphone app and can be integrated with Android voice control systems. Its price starts at about 4,999 yen or about $45 USD.
