Flipboard Database Leaked Usernames And Passwords

It’s not uncommon for online services to get infiltrated which results in the username and passwords of countless users being compromised. That is precisely what has happened with Flipboard. The news aggregator has confirmed that some of its databases were accessed by an unauthorized copy which resulted in usernames and passwords of its users being compromised.

Flipboard confirmed that the unauthorized party was able to access some of its databases multiple times and that they “potentially obtained copies” of the user information in those databases. The unauthorized access took place between June, 2018 through March, 2019 in addition to between April 21-22, 2019.

The company does confirm that not all users have been affected by this security breach. However, out of an abundance of caution, it has decided to mandate password resets for all of its 145 million accounts. Users who log into their accounts next time will be required to change their password.

The databases which were breached included usernames, passwords, and email addresses. Fortunately, Flipboard wasn’t storing the passwords in plain text format, as they were kept hashed. The company says that the investigation into this breach is ongoing and it hasn’t put a firm number on the total accounts affected by the security incident.

Uber May Allow Riders To Pick ‘Favorite’ Drivers

It could be by pure chance that you get the same Uber driver at some point in the future. The service operators by connecting you to drivers that can get to you the fastest, not to those that you prefer to ride with over and over again. However, it might do that in the future.

An unannounced feature has been discovered in Uber which may allow riders to pick their “favorite” drivers, enabling them to ride with those drivers in the future. This unannounced feature was discovered by well-regarded app researcher Jane Manchun Wong, who has developed a habit of finding unannounced features in some of the most popular services.

The feature she has discovered in Uber suggests that the ability to favorite drivers will enable riders to be able to ride with them again in the future. No such thing has previously been possible on the world’s largest ride-sharing service.

No further information is available about this feature so far. Uber appears to be testing it out at this point in time so the company itself is yet to acknowledge its existence. It would depend upon the outcome of this test, one would imagine, whether or not this feature is to be rolled out to all users.

NBC’s Free News Streaming Service Launched

NBC was building a standalone news streaming service to cater to cord-cutters and the network has now launched the service. NBC News Now is the free streaming service that will provide news programming between 3 pm and 11 pm ET. The service will be accessible via the web as well as through the NBC News app for devices like the Apple TV and Roku in addition to mobile devices.

Since there is no subscription fee for the service, viewers will have to put up with ads. They will experience a mixture of ad-supported live programming which will feature both breaking news and on-the-hour segments as well as pre-recorded interviews and features.

The hours are limited initially but NBC has previously floated the idea of providing non-stop content through the service. NBC is taking on the likes of ABC and CBS with its own free news streaming service.

The idea here is to provide a news streaming service to cord cutters who don’t want a traditional cable TV connection but wouldn’t mind keeping an eye on the news as well. It remains to be seen, though, if NBC News Now will be able to pull in a significant number of viewers repeatedly on account of its news programming.

Windows MR Headset Support Coming To HTC Viveport

HTC continues to expand support for the Viveport VR store. The company has now confirmed that all Windows Mixed Reality headsets will be able to access the Viveport VR store starting next month. Not only that, they will also be able to access its Viveport Infinity subscription service. This will provide a boost in the content available for Microsoft’s headset platform.

There are some 600 titles included in the Viveport Infinity subscription service and only 200 of them will be able to work on Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality headsets. Nevertheless, it will be a welcome boost to the numbers for this platform.

Those who subscribe to the service will also be able to get premium content on the Viveport Video service. HTC is also encouraging Viveport developers to add support for Windows Mixed Reality to their creations if they want to cater to a larger audience. HTC’s Viveport VR platform is thus available to all of the notable virtual reality platforms.

It already has support for Valve’s Index and Oculus Rift headsets. This means that HTC can generate revenue from subscriptions and purchases made on its Viveport VR store even from customers who don’t own one of its Vive headsets. It’s a good play on part of the company.

Boost Mobile Could Be Sold For Up To $3 Billion

T-Mobile and Sprint have had to offer to sell the latter’s Boost prepaid brand if they are to get an approval of their pending merger. This has been set as one of the conditions before the long sought after merger between the third and fourth largest mobile carriers in the country can proceed. According to a new report, T-Mobile and Sprint are likely to offload Boost Mobile for a value of up to $3 billion.

Reuters hears from interested buyers that Boost Mobile could be valued at up to $3 billion by T-Mobile and Sprint. The two carriers had to offer concessions to the Federal Communications Commission in order to win an approval from the regulatory for their $26 billion merger.

The concessions include the sale of Boost Mobile in order to reduce the combined entity’s market share in the prepaid segment. The deal is still awaiting a ruling from the U.S. Department of Justice but parties interested in Boost Mobile have reportedly started to prepare bids already. The sale process may only begin after the Justice Department’s review, though.

Prepaid brand Q Link Wireless is believed to have put together a bid for Boost that could range between $1.8 billion to $3 billion, according to Chief Executive Issa Asad. The bid price will depend on the quality of the prepaid brand’s customers, the rate of cancellations, the devices they are using, among other factors. Boost Mobile is estimated to have between 7 million to 8 million customers. Sprint has so far not disclosed the true figure of Boost customers.

Apple’s Declining Brand Image In China Could Hit iPhone Sales Hard

China is one of Apple’s biggest markets for the iPhone. The company’s flagship handset has done very well in one of the world’s most lucrative smartphone markets despite the fact that local rivals have a commanding position in the market as well. However, due to recent events, Apple’s brand image is said to be declining rapidly in China.

This might lead to iPhone sales taking a significant hit this year. Analysts predict that the iPhone could be one of the victims of the ongoing bitter trade dispute between the United States and China which has already resulted in a wide-ranging ban on Huawei.

According to reports, the ongoing trade dispute has resulted in something of an informal boycott of Apple products by customers in China. This will have a direct impact on iPhone sales in the country and it would surely reflect on Apple’s bottom line. It’s also feared that the Chinese government’s next move in the ongoing trade dispute could result in Apple’s access to the Chinese market being restricted. That would also prove to be very damaging to overall iPhone sales.

The trade dispute may compel Chinese citizens to shun Apple products and purchase devices from domestic brands instead, even more so than they already do. Apple reportedly shipped 6.5 million iPhones in China in the first three months of this year. The current quarter’s data will paint a clearer picture of the Chinese market’s recent behavior to the iPhone.
