Facebook Shows Off Upcoming Redesign, Will Include Dark Mode For Web

If you’re getting a bit bored of the way Facebook looks, you’re in luck because at the company’s annual F8 developer conference, they took the wraps off what appears to be a brand new upcoming design that they will be rolling out across all platforms, including mobile and the web versions of Facebook.

This redesign, known as FB5, will feature a much brighter and cleaner-looking interface. As it stands, Facebook currently sports a design with the Facebook-blue navigation bar at the top of the page, but judging by what we can tell from the video, Facebook will be doing away with that in favor of a completely white and bright interface.

If you’re worried about this being potentially glaring, not to worry because Facebook also announced that they will be introducing a dark mode for the web version of Facebook as well. Unfortunately, there was no mention of whether the dark mode could come to the mobile version, but given that more mobile apps (including Messenger), we wouldn’t be surprised if it were to come to the mobile version later on.

There is no mention of when this redesign is expected to roll out, but we have to admit that it does look a lot better than the current version, so we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for it.

Facebook Will Soon Let Users Chat Across Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp

Earlier this year, it was rumored that Facebook could be looking to unify some of its apps. This included WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger where the idea was that by unifying them, users could chat across them all at once. This is versus the current situation where each app is standalone and more or less separate from each other.

It looks like the rumors have come true because during Facebook’s F8 developer conference, the company has since confirmed that they will be unifying their apps in the future. This was revealed by Messenger’s head of consumer product Asha Sharma who said that in the future, users will be able to send messages across all three of their platforms.

This is expected to be part of the new Messenger experience where one app will be able to handle messages from multiple sources. Sharma likens this experience to how phone calls are made, where it doesn’t matter which carrier you use or your friend uses, a call is still a call and it will go through.

We’re not sure how exactly Facebook plans on implementing this feature and whether or not it could end up being a mess, but we’ll have to wait and see. That being said, we probably shouldn’t expect to see it anytime soon so don’t hold your breath for it just yet.

Niantic’s Ingress Game Now Available On Netflix As An Animation Series

Many might be familiar with Niantic as the developer of the popular augmented reality game, Pokemon GO. However, years before Pokemon GO became a reality, the company was actually developing another AR based game in the form of Ingress, which admittedly did not quite receive the same level of attention that Pokemon GO did.

However, it looks like Niantic is hoping to revive some interest in the franchise and have since teamed up with Netflix to launch an animated series based on it. Plans to launch the series was announced in mid-2018 and was initially pegged for a release in the later part of 2018, but it looks like it did not make it and it has instead chosen to launch in 2019.

For those who did not play Ingress, this will be a completely new experience and a new world to explore, but for those who have, you could think of this series as being an extension of sorts that lets you explore the world in a new way. There is no doubt that Niantic is hoping that those who watch and enjoy the series might want to play the game as well, thus expanding its player base.

In the meantime, Niantic is also working on a new AR game based around the Harry Potter franchise. There is no word on when the game will be released, but so far initial reviews of the beta has been largely positive.

Apple Acknowledges iPhone Price Cuts Are Showing Better Results

Did Apple make a mistake by pricing its iPhones too high? Some seem to think so, and Apple themselves have quietly acknowledged that as well by cutting the price of their iPhones in certain markets. It turned out to be a smart move because over in India, one of the markets that the iPhone’s price was “corrected”, it’s starting to show positive results.

During Apple’s Q2 earnings report, the company’s CEO Tim Cook acknowledged that following the price cuts they made in India, the preliminary results have been positive. That is to be expected given the basic law of supply and demand, where a lower price will no doubt increase the demand.

It had previously been reported that Apple had experienced similar positive results in China following price cuts made in the region. According to Cook, “We have made some adjustments in India and we’ve seen preliminarily some better results there. Everything that we do [referring to pricing actions in China], does advise everything we do in the future so we try to learn the best we can and fold that into our thinking.”

Of course, whether or not Apple will revise its pricings for future iPhones remains to be seen, although it does seem like it should be an obvious move. It was recently reported that the iPhone XR is dominating iPhone sales in the US, suggesting that the iPhone’s price has gotten to the point where customers are willing to give up certain features to save themselves a few hundred dollars.

Concept Imagines The MacBook With A Foldable Display

With laptop makers churning out laptop/tablet hybrids, there have been some Apple fans who have called upon the company to do the same. Apple has resisted the idea in the past, but as we have seen with devices like the Apple Pencil, it is not unprecedented for Apple to have a change of heart.

Of course, when exactly we will see such a hybrid remains to be seen, but in the meantime, designers at Astro HQ (makers of the Luna Display) have cooked up a concept which shows what a hybrid MacBook could look like, but with a twist where instead of it being a laptop with a touchscreen display, it is a laptop with a completely foldable display.

The end result seems to resemble a much larger iPad Pro rather than a MacBook, where the top half of the display acts as the main screen, while the bottom part could be thought of as a drawing area. This would be similar to foldable devices like the Nintendo 3DS where the upper half of the screen shows the game, while the bottom half is where gamers interact with the game.

We imagine that it would be pretty hard to create such a massive foldable display, but we wouldn’t be surprised if that is where our devices ultimately evolved to. At the moment, we’re seeing how some companies such as Samsung and Huawei are creating smartphones that can be unfolded into tablets, so we wouldn’t be surprised if in the future, we’d have tablets that could be further unfolded into even larger tablets.
