Twitter Now Hides Harmful Tweets From Public Figures

Twitter executives had recently hinted that the platform could make a change soon which reduces the reach of harmful tweets from public figures. It has officially announced this change today. A new notice for tweets from public figures is rolling out today, particularly the tweets that break its community guidelines. So if a public figure were to tweet something against the guidelines, Twitter can notify users of the violation and then reduce the reach of that tweet.

Twitter says that this notice is only going to apply for tweets that are posted from accounts that belong to political figures, users that are verified, and other accounts that have over 100,000 followers.

If a tweet is flagged as violating the guidelines, a team at Twitter will then decide whether it’s a matter of “public interest.” If they so decide, a gray box will be shown before the tweet which tells users that the tweet is in violation but they can view it if they click through the box.

“In the past, we’ve allowed certain Tweets that violated our rules to remain on Twitter because they were in the public’s interest, but it wasn’t clear when and how we made those determinations,” the company said in a post on its blog, “Serving the public conversation includes providing the ability for anyone to talk about what matters to them; this can be especially important when engaging with government officials and political figures.”

Google Maps Can Tell You How Crowded Your Train Might Be

Google Maps is a great resource for finding transit directions and it will also tell you how long it will take you to reach your destination. What it could tell you was just how crowded your train or bus ride was going to be. Google is rolling out a new feature today which will predict crowdedness for transit options.

A crowded bus or train ride isn’t the most peaceful experience in the world. You often find yourself packed into big crowds like sardines in a can. It can get hot and sweaty in there, quickly making you wonder why you didn’t decide to take a taxi instead.

Google Maps wants to take the pain out of this as well. It has introduced crowdedness predictions so that users can see just how crowded their bus, train or subway ride might be. The predictions will be based on past rides. They will help commuters decide whether or not they want to travel in a can of sardines or just wait a few more minutes to grab the next train or bus where their chances of getting a seat might be higher.

Google says that this feature will be rolling out in almost 200 cities across the globe for users on both iOS and Android starting today.

Waymo Making Self-Driving Pickups Available To Lyft Riders

Waymo has its own commercial self-driving ride-hailing service called Waymo One but the company did ink an agreement with Lyft back in May to bring its self-driving vehicles to the latter’s ride-hailing platform. It has now made some of its autonomous minivans available to Lyft riders.

The self-driving vehicles only undertake rides in a restricted small area just outside of Phoenix, Arizona, reports CNBC. Waymo has been testing its self-driving cars there already. The company’s had said last month that their agreement will see Waymo adding 10 of its autonomous cars to Lyft’s platform in Phoenix over the next few months.

The full 10 Waymo self-driving vehicles are reportedly still not available on the platform with only a few being put in service to offer autonomous rides to Lyft users. The service will only be offered to those Lyft customers that are planning to start and complete a ride within the geofenced area where Waymo has been allowed to operate its self-driving cars.

So when customers in those areas look for a ride on Lyft, they will be given the option to take a ride in a Waymo minivan or stick with a conventional vehicle with a human driver. Even though Waymo’s cars are completely autonomous, there’s always a human safety driver behind the wheel in order to take control should the need arise.
