The best computer interfaces, some experts say, are those that you may not even see or at least get out of your way when you don’t need them. If the rumors are true, Apple is said to be ditching 3D Touch in its 2019 iPhones. Instead, Apple will be replacing it with Haptic Touch, a feature that debuted in 2018’s iPhone XR. As such, it’s not surprising to learn that in a new report from 9to5Mac, the publication is claiming that Apple’s 2019 iPhones are all expected to come with a revamped taptic engine.
The taptic engine that Apple will be using has been given the codename “leap haptics”. Not much is known about this new component at the moment, but there is a chance that it could be used towards improving on the Haptic Touch feature. Given that the 2019 iPhones are no longer expected to have 3D Touch, it would make sense that the company would be trying to improve on the Haptic Touch feature.
While 3D Touch and the concept of pressure-sensitive displays make a lot of sense, the downside to 3D Touch was that it wasn’t always intuitive. This is because how a developer chooses to implement the feature is inconsistent across the board, where some developers choose to use it, while others don’t.
This means that if you’re used to certain 3D Touch features for one app, it might not be present in a different app. In any case, we’ll just have to wait and see what this new engine will be bringing to the table, so check back with us in the coming months for the details.
