International Android 9 Pie Release Underway For LG V30

LG isn’t known for being quick to release software updates for its devices. The LG G7 didn’t receive its Pie update in the United States after almost a year of its being first rolled out. LG is currently rolling out the Pie update for the V30, a handset launched in 2017, for the international variant only.

LG V30 owners in the United States have drawn the short end of the stick as there’s no confirmation as yet when this update will finally be released for the V30 in the US. LG has released the update so far for the V30’s South Korean and European variants. It’s now rolling out the update for the international variant.

No other LG V30 variants have received the Android 9 Pie update so far and there’s little in the way of assurance from the company about when these variants will finally get the update. This includes the US variant as well.

LG had made a big deal about launching a software update center which would focus on rolling out updates quickly. That has turned out to be nothing more than a PR move. There has been no noticeable difference in the speed at which the company rolls out updates. Some would even argue that it has actually got slower than it used to be.

Capital One Data Breach To Be Investigated By NY Attorney General’s Office

Capital One has confirmed a massive data breach which has impacted over 100 million people in the United States and Canada. It wasn’t likely that an investigation wouldn’t be launched into the breach. While the bank has carried out its own investigation, the New York Attorney General’s Office will be looking into this breach as well.

New York Attorney General Letitia James has announced that her office is going to investigate the Capital One data breach. This will be done to ensure that New Yorkers who were victims of this breach are provided relief,” according to James, who added that We cannot allow hacks of this nature to become every day occurrences.”

According to reports, this breach was allegedly the work of a former Amazon Web Services engineer. The leaked data includes phone numbers, emails, names, dates of birth, and self-reported incomes. The bank’s press release also mentioned that 140,000 U.S. Social Security numbers, 80,000 bank account numbers, and 1 million Canadian social insurance numbers were compromised as well.

Capital One has said that it immediately fixed the vulnerability which was exploited in this breach and that it’s working with federal law enforcement. The person responsible has been arrested by the FBI, it said. Capital One believes it is unlikely that the leaked information “was used for fraud or disseminated by this individual.”

Autoplay Videos Could Be Banned If This Bill Passes

how to record calls on iPhone
A new bill has been sponsored by Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) which seeks to hold the tech industry’s “addictive” design to account. It seeks to ban endless scrolling and YouTube autoplay. The bill, titled Social Media Addiction Reduction Technology Act or SMART, seeks to ban features that make people spend more time on the platform by design.

It would include Snapstreaks as well as it’s a feature which incentivizes the continued use of the service. If this bill is approved, similar rules could be created by the Federal Trade Commission and Health and Human Services which would expire after three years unless codified into law by Congress.

If the legislation is passed, it would result in a ban on features like endless scrolling for news feeds and autoplaying videos. It would also mandate that social media platforms integrated natural stopping points and also offer in-app tools which allow users to track how much time they have spent on the platform.

“Big tech has embraced a business model of addiction,” Hawley said, adding that “Too much of the ‘innovation’ in this space is designed not to create better products, but to capture more attention by using psychological tricks that make it difficult to look away.”

Apple Hasn’t Patched An iPhone Exploit Discovered By Google Engineers

Google Project Zero researchers Natalie Silvanovich and Samuel Groß have discovered six vulnerabilities in iOS one of which Apple is yet to patch successfully. The researchers are part of Google’s elite bug hunting program that often finds such exploits in other services and informs the relevant companies so that they can be patched before some bad actors exploit them.

Five of the six iOS vulnerabilities that were discovered by these researchers were patched with the iOS 12.4 update that Apple sent out last week. It did bring security fixes for compatible devices and these patches were included in it. All of the six vulnerabilities that the two discovered are “interactionless,” which means that they can run without requiring any interaction from the user.

This is done by exploiting a vulnerability in the iMessage client. Four of them, which includes the one that’s still not patched, needs an attacker to send a message with malicious code to an unpatched device. It can then execute as soon as the message is opened by the user. The other two vulnerabilities use a memory exploit.

The security researchers have posted the details of the five bugs that have been patched by Apple. They will not reveal the details of the bug that still remains unpatched until Apple rolls out a fix.

Waze Now Lets Drivers Invite Multiple Passengers To A Carpool

Waze today announced that it’s launching a feature that has long been required by Waze Carpool users. It’s now allowing them to invite multiple passengers to join a carpool. This will let them easily choose more people from their Carpool crew and then ride with them together as this will open up the HOV 3+ express lanes for drivers.

This isn’t something like an Uber Pool even though one can draw a parallel between the two. When Waze launched the service last year, it pointed out that drivers could only offer two trips a day.

This feature is primarily meant to match users with other people who both live and work in similar locations. This is being done to make car journeys more efficient instead of making people undertake more individual car journeys.

Once drivers have confirmed a ride, they can tap on the + icon in the app to invite more riders on their route with a minimal detour. As more riders accept the carpool ride, drivers can save even more on their commute. They can fill up to four seats in a carpool with prices being adjusted so that they don’t exceed the total sumo of gas as well as wear and tear.

Waze Carpool users will be able to access this new feature starting this week. It’s available everywhere Waze offers its Carpool service.
