First Cruise Ship Partially Powered By Battery Sails For The Arctic

We have heard a lot of about battery power being used for cars but could it be used for significantly bigger modes of transportation? That’s a question the MS Roald Amundsen aims to answer. It’s the world’s first cruise ship that’s powered partially by battery. It’s operator Hurtigruten has said that the ship is going to set out from northern Norway on its maiden voyage.

The MS Roald Amundsen has been designed to sail in harsh climate waters while also taking 500 passengers onboard. The ship is named after the Norwegian explorer who had navigated the Northwest Passage in 1903-1906.

He was also the first to reach the South Pole in 1911. The ship is going to sail from Tromsoe this week for the Arctic and will then sail through the Northwest Passage to Alaska before it heads south to reach Antarctica by October this year.

The ships engines primarily run on marine gasoil, however, the battery pack onboard the ship enables it to run only on batteries for up to 60 minutes when the conditions are just right. The company is of the view that this hybrid arrangement will reduce fuel consumption and save around 20 percent in CO2 emissions compared to if the ship was running on gasoil alone.

Facebook To Ban Ads That Tell Americans Not To Vote

Facebook has taken a lot of flak for how its social network was used to spread misinformation during the previous election. With election season fast approaching, the company is taking steps to ensure that there’s not a repeat of last time. It has now said that ads which discourage people in the United States from voting ahead of the U.S. presidential election next year will be banned.

According to Facebook’s second annual Civil Rights Audits published over the weekend, the company is going to ban ads that tell Americans not to vote in the upcoming presidential election.

Facebook says that it’s new “don’t vote” policy is in developmental stages and that it’s seeking advice from voting organizations before it goes into effect. It did point out that this policy will initially apply in the United States only. Facebook promises that this policy is going to become effective by the fall this year.

Facebook has been taking steps to ensure that its platform is not used for voter suppression. It already banned posts that spread misinformation about voting methods, election dates and times, and polling locations last year. The rules added last year also banned intimidation tactics including misrepresentations about whether votes will be counted.

Sony Thinking About Buying Development Studios

Microsoft has acquired quite a few development studios over the years who have worked on titles for the Xbox One and PC. Sony didn’t follow in its footsteps but it appears that the Japanese giant is now thinking about doing the same thing. Sony has confirmed that it’s thinking about buying development studios.

Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan confirmed to Nikkei that the company is thinking about acquiring game development studios. Ryan believes that the content will now become more important than ever as major tech companies like Google enter the market with their game streaming services.

There have been no reports so far about any potential development studios that Sony might have its eye on. Ryan hasn’t revealed whether the company is in advanced talks with any studios for an acquisition. It goes without saying, though, Sony would be looking at multiple options before it decides which studio or studios are worth acquiring in order to achieve what it’s trying to.

Sony’s acquisition of game development studios might result in more exclusives for the company’s upcoming console. Sony is already working on the PlayStation 5 and it’s expected to be released next year. It will certainly be interesting to see how this plays out.

Uber Now Shows Bikes And Scooters Prominently In App

Uber has been working on micromobility solutions as well with scooters and bikes. The company today announced that it’s now integrating micromobility into its core services. Not only will Uber’s app show bikes and scooters from JUMP but from Lime as well in the main app. This is the first time that Uber has displayed a third-party’s services so prominently in its own app.

This is being done on a limited scale, though, with users seeing the bikes and scooters when they launch the main app in Atlanta and San Diego. The app will prominently display Lime’s offerings as well. This comes a year after Uber and Lime officially announced a partnership which saw Lime adding Uber branding to its scooters in the aforementioned cities.

If Uber finds that the initial test in these cities has gone well, it’s going to expand this to more cities where bikes and scooters are available. The company has seen considerable interest from users for its micromobility services.

Uber itself pointed out that one in five of all tripes are under a mile and nearly half of them are under three miles. Electric bikes and scooters are a good option to cover such short distances, particularly during rush hour.
