Apple is a company that is notorious for trying to do everything themselves. This is why they control as much of the hardware on their products as possible, and why they have even created their own software instead of relying on alternatives such as Android or Windows. It is this kind of approach which is why we weren’t surprised to learn that Apple wanted to start making its own modems for its smartphones.
However, making a modem from scratch is a massive undertaking, and that is why it was also not a surprise to learn that Apple could be looking to get some help by buying out Intel’s modem business. It turns out the rumors were true because Apple has since officially confirmed that they will be spending $1 billion to acquire (most) of Intel’s modem business.
According to Apple’s announcement, “Apple and Intel have signed an agreement for Apple to acquire the majority of Intel’s smartphone modem business. Approximately 2,200 Intel employees will join Apple, along with intellectual property, equipment and leases.” As a result, it is expected that Apple will use this opportunity to help further their efforts in developing their own 5G modems.
Currently, thanks to a settlement with Qualcomm, Apple is expected to start sourcing 5G tech from the company for its 2020 iPhone, but ultimately we imagine that the company will want to start making their own hardware to reduce their reliance on others.

Thanks to recently leaked specs, it was revealed that Sony had a new compact camera in the works in the form of the Sony RX100 VII, a new addition to its popular RX100 series of compacts. If you are in the market for a new camera, then you might be pleased to learn that the RX100 VII has since been officially launched.
While compacts don’t get a lot of attention, the RX100 has performed rather admirably, thanks largely to its 1-inch CMOS sensor that allows it to capture some pretty high-quality images and videos. It has also seen a lot of popularity amongst YouTubers who love the camera’s lightweight design for vlogging purposes.
Speaking of vlogging, the RX100 VII comes with several upgrades that will make it even more appealing. This is thanks to an external microphone port which means that vloggers who want better quality audio can mic up the camera. There are also some new features like “Single Burst Driving Shoot Mode” that can take up to seven photos at once.
The camera will also feature an upgraded autofocus system where it is capable of AF/AE calculations at 60 times per second, making it a beast at focusing on its subject. Sony is also boasting autofocus speeds of 0.02 seconds, making it similar to other high-end cameras like the Sony A9 and the A6400. The Sony RX100 VII will be launching this August and is expected to be priced around $1,200.

Apple’s MacBook keyboards are terrible. You can take a quick look on the forums on the internet where the general consensus is that not only are they not particularly nice to type on, but their durability has some serious issues where in the past, we’ve heard how debris getting under the keys is enough to render them useless.
However, we did hear a report from earlier this month which suggested that Apple could be changing the keyboard to a scissor switch design versus the butterfly design, and that it could be arriving for its 2020 MacBooks. The good news is that it could actually arrive earlier than we thought, and that it could actually arrive on the rumored 16-inch MacBook Pro.
This is according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who claims that Apple is expected to introduce the new keyboard design to the 16-inch model first, which is expected to arrive this year. That is actually good news if true, because we were wondering why would Apple launch a higher-end 16-inch model but retain the same old keyboard design, but if Kuo is accurate, and he usually is, then it looks like it won’t.
Apple is still expected to transition its future laptops away from the butterfly switch design in 2020, but it will start later this year where we will get an idea of what kind of changes the company will be making.
