BMW Unveils Its X6 Covered In Vantablack

If you thought black only came in one shade, think again. If you recall, several years ago, there were reports that a new shade of black was developed called Vantablack that apparently can absorb 99.965% of light. Now it looks like BMW will be taking advantage of the color by covering their X6 with it.

Dubbed the VBX6 Vantablack, this is a show car made in collaboration between BMW and Surrey NanoSystems, the latter of whom is the inventor of the Vantablack technology. According to BMW, they claim that they the BMW X6 is the only vehicle in the world to feature the use of the Vantablack VBx2 finish.

The VBx2 finish has actually been specifically developed for architectural and scientific use. The end result is a BMW X6 that looks kind of “flat”, but that’s kind of what makes the paint so surreal where it absorbs so much light that it can make 3D objects look flat. We’re not sure if BMW plans on making the VBx2 an actual option for future BMW X6 customers, but there is no doubt that if it were, it would be quite a striking look to see on the streets.

According to Hussein al-Attar, the designer of the new X6, “We often prefer to talk about silhouettes and proportions rather than surfaces and lines. The Vantablack VBx2 coating foregrounds these fundamental aspects of automotive design, without any distraction from light and reflections.”

Apple Announces Plans To Improve On Siri’s Privacy Protection

For a company that prides itself in protecting its users’ privacy, we imagine that Apple must have been mortified when a report surfaced that revealed that Apple had sent Siri recordings to outside contractors for analyzing. Following the report, Apple suspended the program and last we heard, they terminated the contractors that worked for them.

It has been several weeks since the news broke, and Apple has since come forward with an official statement and also to apologize to its users. The company has also announced that they will be making some changes and improvements to help better protect user privacy when using Siri.

This includes not retaining audio recordings of Siri interactions. Apple will still analyze Siri interactions, but it will only be through computer-generated transcripts. Apple has also announced that users will be able to opt into a program that will allow Apple to improve Siri through audio samples. Apple will also only allow Apple employees to listen to these audio samples, suggesting that maybe the use of outside contractors may no longer be on the table.

According to Apple, “Apple is committed to putting the customer at the center of everything we do, which includes protecting their privacy. We created Siri to help them get things done, faster and easier, without compromising their right to privacy. We are grateful to our users for their passion for Siri, and for pushing us to constantly improve.”

Japan Is Selling Special UV Ink Stamps To Help Mark Perverts On Trains

When it comes to personal safety, there are plenty of things that we can buy to help keep ourselves safe in public. For example, you can buy mace/pepper spray to fend off attackers, or there are also whistles and devices that emit loud and shrill noises to deter attackers or to bring attention to yourself.

However, over in Japan, a stationery company based in Nagoya by the name of Shachihata has started to sell something called the Anti-Nuisance Stamp. This is a stamp that uses UV ink that marks the person it has been stamped on, similar to how some clubs use UV ink mark patrons who enter their establishment.

This stamp has been designed to help women fight back against perverts on trains. If you’re familiar with Japan, then you might know that the country faces an issue of “chikan” or sexual harassment where men take advantage of the crowdedness of trains to molest and grope women.

The idea of the stamp is that it will allow women to quickly stamp their attackers without them necessarily knowing about it. After which if the women were to report the incident to the police, the stamp can help identify the groper. It appears that these stamps have proven to be a hit where the company has sold out of its entire batch on the first day of it going on sale.

Apple’s Tile-Like Tracker Could Come With Augmented Reality Features

According to a rumor from earlier this year, it has been suggested that Apple could be working on a new accessory similar to the Tile tracker. For those who are unfamiliar, the Tile tracker is a small Bluetooth accessory that you slip into a bag or hang off a keychain. It has been designed to help users keep track of their items using their phones.

This is something that Apple is apparently interested in, but according to a recent report from MacRumors, it appears that Apple’s Tile-like tracker could have added functionality. The report suggests that based on evidence discovered in the Find My app bundle, there is an ARKit “star” image that suggests that this accessory could have some kind of augmented reality support.

Perhaps it could be used in a way where an AR interface can be overlaid on the screen to point the user towards where the tracker is, or maybe tell them how far away it is, and so on. Also, it suggests that the device could be tethered to an iPhone or an Apple Watch. Given that it would be hard to physically attach such an accessory to a phone or watch, this tethering would allow users to receive alerts when the tracker is out of range of an iOS or watchOS device.

There is no word on when this tracking accessory is expected to launch, but there have been some evidence to suggest that it is in the works. Perhaps we’ll learn more about it at Apple’s iPhone event this September.
