Twitter’s CEO Just Had His Account Hacked

Being the CEO of a company usually comes with certain perks that customers of the company might not be able to enjoy. In Twitter’s case, we imagine that maybe the account of the company’s CEO, Jack Dorsey, would be extra safe with perhaps additional layers of security and monitoring.

It turns out that maybe it wasn’t because according to a post by Twitter, it turns out that Dorsey’s account was hacked. This was based on a series of tweets sent from Dorsey’s account that seemed to contain a lot of hate speech that included racist comments and also threats. It was later revealed that the attack seemed to have originated from a source called Cloudhopper.

If you are unsure who they are, they were a company that Twitter had acquired a lot time ago to boost their SMS service, suggesting that these tweets could be sent from that service. Twitter seems to have reacted pretty quickly where about after 30 minutes from when the first tweet was made, the company deleted them.

According to Twitter, “The phone number associated with the account was compromised due to a security oversight by the mobile provider. This allowed an unauthorized person to compose and send tweets via text message from the phone number. That issue is now resolved.”

More Details Emerge About Apple’s Upcoming Tile-Like Tracking Accessory

We have been hearing rumors that Apple could be working on a Tile-like tracking accessory of their own. Recently, it was revealed that one of the possible features of the tracker is augmented reality, although how exactly this works remains to be seen. Now thanks to additional information from MacRumors, we have learnt more details about the device.

One of those details is the ability to remove the battery of the tracker and change it. It has been suggested that the battery used would be one of those small circular batteries that you might use in a watch, meaning that you should be able to replace the battery easily and buy it from pretty much any store.

It also seems that users will be able to set “safe” locations. This means that should the device that the accessory is tracking end up in any of those locations, users won’t be notified of it. For example, you could setup safe locations in your home so that even if you’re out of range, like the tracker could be in your room but you’re in the kitchen, it won’t alert you. Instead, it will alert you if it was outside the safe zone.

Last but not least, MacRumors discovered an image of the accessory in an internal build of iOS 13 suggesting that this could be what the accessory looks like. It is unclear if this is a placeholder or if it could be the real thing, so take it with a grain of salt for now.

Google Discovers Malicious Websites Have Been Secretly Hacking iPhones For Years

Due to the slightly more open nature of Android, it had led to this perception that Android is less secure than iOS. That is not necessarily true as Apple’s iPhones have had their fair share of security and malware scares in the past. In fact, a recent report from Google’s Project Zero could end up leaving a bit of egg on Apple’s face.

This is because according to their findings, it seems that malicious websites have apparently been hacking iPhones secretly for years. These websites exploited a zero-day flaw in the iPhone, and given that these websites were said to receive thousands of visitors per week, we can only imagine how many users might have been affected by this.

The malware, once successfully installed, would be able to steal files and upload live location data. It would also be able to access the iPhone’s “keychain” which is where login information is stored. While this sounds scary, the malware is said to be non-persistent, meaning that once the iPhone has been rebooted, the malware would be removed, although not before it could have sent some information back to the hackers.

If you’re worried about the security of your iPhone, it should be pointed out that Apple has already fixed the flaw. The update was actually released at the start of the year so if you have updated your iPhone since then, you should be safe.

Convincing Iron Man Deepfake Video Replaces Robert Downey Jr. With Tom Cruise

While many of us would be hard-pressed to imagine anyone else playing the role of Tony Stark aka Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, did you know that at one point in time, it was reported that Tom Cruise had actually wanted to play that character? Neither Cruise nor Marvel have confirmed if those reports are true, but in case you’re wondering how that will turn out, you’re in luck.

This is because in a very convincing and slightly disturbing video, deepfake AI has been used to replace Downey Jr.’s face with Cruise’s face in some scenes from the various Marvel movies that Iron Man appears in. This of course includes the Iron Man movies, along with Spider-Man: Homecoming, and the Avengers movies.

A voice actor was also hired to try and mimic Cruise’s voice and speech patterns, resulting in a scarily accurate video. Now, in some scenes, the deepfake doesn’t work so good and you can see the AI trying to catchup, but in other scenes, it looks spot on. While this video is nothing short of amazing, it also serves to remind us how the rise of deepfake videos could lead to people being manipulated without them knowing it.

It could be used to create videos of politicians, like a video of a president giving a speech. This has led to concern that the technology could be used for malicious purposes. However, companies such as Adobe have been working on creating tools to help spot images that have been manipulated using AI.
