Apple’s 2020 iPhones Will Use 5nm Chipsets

For years, Apple has been working to build its chipsets using a smaller manufacturing process. The A13 chipset found in this year’s iPhones are built on the 7nm process, but if a report from Nikkei is to be believed, Apple’s 2020 iPhones could actually feature new chipsets that are built using the smaller 5nm process.

In case you’re wondering how this affects you as an end user, basically by using a smaller process, it allows more power to be packed into a smaller space. Ultimately, this in theory should result in a chipset that is more efficient and more powerful, but yet smaller, which could leave more space for other components.

Apple’s shift to the 5nm process doesn’t really come as a surprise. In fact, if anything, it was really only a matter of time before they did. This is also what other companies are working towards, but exactly what kind of gains and improvements we’ll see over the A13 chipset remains to be seen, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

In addition to the smaller process, the report corroborates rumors that 2020’s iPhones will come with 5G, and that Apple is expected to take advantage of Qualcomm’s X55 5G modem. We have heard that Apple is apparently interested in developing their own modems, but we won’t be seeing those arrive anytime soon.

The AirPods Pro’s Silicone Ear Tips Are Custom Made And Won’t Be Easy To Replace

The thing with Apple products is that they tend to come with parts that are custom made. For example, for years, Apple’s iPhones used custom pentalobe screws that made it difficult for people to repair the phone. Now it looks like if you want to fix your AirPods Pro earbuds, you might find it pretty difficult as well.

This is according to a report from iFixit who did their customary teardown of Apple’s newly-launched AirPods Pro. In their teardown, they discovered that Apple is using custom molded silicone ear tips. According to iFixit, “Most silicone tips slide over a groove on the outside of the earbud. Apple’s design uses some fancy engineering and (surprise!) isn’t compatible with any typical silicone tips.”

What this means is that if for whatever reason you lose the supplied ear tips or if they are damaged or if they don’t fit quite as well as you would like, you won’t be able to just grab any old pair of ear tips from other earbuds or earphones and stick them on. So what happens if you need to get them replaced?

Thankfully though, according to John Gruber, he was told that the replacement ear tips only cost $4 which is pretty affordable. This is versus replacing the actual individual earbuds themselves, which if they are no longer under warranty or if you don’t have AppleCare+, will cost you $89 per earbud.

Apple Releases New HomePod Update That Addresses Bricking Problem

As some of you might have heard, Apple released an update for iOS 13.2, but unfortunately during the update process, it seems that some HomePod users ended up with bricked devices. Apple has since warned users that if they have installed the update that they should not attempt to reset it or remove the device from the Home app.

If you have followed Apple’s instructions and you still have a working device, then you might want to update your HomePod ASAP. This is because Apple has released a new update for the speakers that bumps it up to version 13.2.1. The changelog is exactly the same as the previous one, but the main difference is that apparently it addresses the bricking problem.

Those with working HomePods should probably update to it where hopefully it will not present an issue. The update should be automatically installed so if you’re unsure, you can check your HomePod’s firmware history and if it is version 13.2.1, then you should be good to go. However, those who have updated and have a bricked HomePod, it seems that there is really nothing you can do except to bring it into an Apple Store where apparently, Apple will be replacing the bricked devices even if they are outside of its warranty.
