New Battery Tech Could Juice Up Electric Cars In Just 10 Minutes

While range anxiety regarding electric cars might have lessened over the years, thanks to modern day electric cars being able to travel greater distances, the next problem that needs to be addressed would be charging. This is because while charging tech has improved greatly, it still takes considerably longer to charge an electric car versus filling it up at the gas station.

However, thanks to researcher done at Penn State University led by Chao Yang Wang, they think they might have solved that problem by coming up with new battery technology that could potentially recharge an electric car to 80% in just 10 minutes. This might still be a tad longer than it would take to fill up a gas tank, but it is still pretty damn fast.

Wang’s research focused started out rather simple, with the idea of just pumping a lithium-ion battery with as much energy as possible. However, the problem with supercharging a lithium-ion battery is that in the process, there is a chance for lithium to form plate-like deposits on the negative electrode’s surface, which in turn decreases its battery life.

However, the researchers came up with an idea that by heating up the battery to a high temperature first, they could make it too hot for the lithium plates to form. They then tested it out on a commercially available industrial battery where first they tested it without heating, where after 60 cycles, lithium plates began to form.

They then tested it out again where at 60C, they managed to recharge the battery 2,500 times without lithium plates forming. This is said to be equivalent to about 750,000 kilometers. While we’re not sure if and when this tech could find its way to electric car batteries, the researchers are now hoping to go even further by reducing charging time to as low as 5 minutes.

Waze’s Carpool Gets Added To Moovit’s Public Transit App

If you do not have the luxury of owning a car, then public transportation is the next best thing. However, public transport can get a bit complicated because to get to certain places, you might need to take the bus and then the train, or vice versa. This means that you definitely need to plan your trip before leaving.

This is where Moovit’s app comes in handy, where in case you’re unfamiliar, it is an app that helps users plan their journeys using public transit networks. If you’re a Moovit user or if the app interests you, then you might be even more interested to learn that Moovit and Waze have teamed up, where Waze’s Carpool feature will now be integrated into the app.

What this means is that in addition to your usual public transit options, there will also be the option of looking for a Waze driver to carpool with. This basically gives users more options when it comes to choosing how they want to get to their destination, so you could take a train to some place and for the last leg of the journey, you could hop into a Waze Carpool.

That being said, the Waze Carpool integration is currently in testing where it will only be available to users in the US, Brazil, Mexico, and Israel. It will also currently only available for Android but it is expected to find its way to iOS shortly.

iPad Pro Might Not Be Refreshed This Year

If you are thinking about getting your hands on an iPad Pro, you might want to hold off until 2020. This is because according to reports, it has been suggested that Apple might not refresh the iPad Pro this year, meaning that for the sake of futureproofing, holding off until next year might be a good idea if you don’t have the need for it right now.

This is according to Apple’s chief financial officer Luca Maestri who during Apple’s earnings call, said that Apple’s revenue guidance for the holiday quarter accounts for the iPad Pro having a different launch timing on a year-over-year basis. This has led to speculation that there is a good chance that the iPad Pro refresh might not take place until 2020.

There have been reports suggesting that the refresh could happen in March 2020, so the comments made by Maestri seemingly corroborates those claims. It has been pointed out that Apple usually refreshes its 12.9-inch iPad Pro every 18 months or so, so it makes sense that we might not see a refresh this year for that particular model.

It is possible that Apple could still refresh the tablet this year, but if they don’t, don’t be surprised. Either way, we’ll be keeping an eye out for it.

Apple Card Owners Can Soon Buy An iPhone In Monthly Installments With Zero Interest

Apple’s iPhones do not come cheap which is why buying it through a carrier on an installment plan can be rather appealing. However, if you’d rather not be tied to a carrier, Apple might have an alternative solution for you. During Apple’s earnings call, the company’s CEO Tim Cook announced that soon, Apple Card owners will be able to buy an iPhone via an installment plan.

This will be repaid over the course of 24-months where each month’s payments will be charged directly to the Apple Card. There will be zero interest on these installments which means that ultimately, you pay the same amount instead of paying more. The best part is that because you are using the Apple Card, you will also be able to get a 3% cash back on the purchase, so you might actually benefit from this.

That being said, there is no word on when this new program will be launched. Cook mentioned that it should be launching later this year so if you had your eye on the new iPhone, then you might want to wait until this program launches if you’re trying to better manage your finances. It should also be arriving in time for the holiday season which means that you’ll be able to buy the iPhone for someone as a gift, or maybe even a gift for yourself.

16-inch MacBook Pro Could Sport Slightly Redesigned Touch Bar

According to the rumors, Apple’s 16-inch MacBook Pro will actually look a lot like the 15-inch MacBook Pro. This is because while the screen will be larger, it will have thinner bezels that will help it maintain its overall size. Now according to a report from 9to5Mac, they have discovered a new image in macOS 10.15.1 which suggests a slightly redesigned Touch Bar.

As you can see in the image above, the Touch ID button seems to have been separated from the Touch Bar itself. In case you’re unfamiliar, current MacBooks with the Touch Bar feature a look that stretches the Touch Bar from end to end, with the Touch ID button at the right hand corner. The way it’s been designed makes it look seamless, but with this design, Touch ID has been clearly separated from the Touch Bar.

It has been speculated in the past that Apple could actually also introduce a physical Esc button. Right now, Esc exists as a software button on the Touch Bar, which some users weren’t too thrilled about. With this redesigned Touch Bar, it has led to speculation that a physical Esc button could be part of this design. Some of the other changes include a redesigned scissor switch keyboard.

That being said, it is unclear when the laptop will be announced. It was previously rumored that the laptop could be announced this month, but it’s starting to feel unlikely. A new report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is now suggesting that it might not arrive until mid-2020.
