WhatsApp Will Stop Working On Device Running iOS 8 In February 2020

If for whatever reason you are still holding onto an iOS device running iOS 8, then you might want to take note because according to WhatsApp, the company has confirmed that come 1st of February, 2020, the app will stop working for these devices, where you will need to update to iOS 9 or later if you wish to keep using it.

We are already in iOS 13 which means that iOS 8 is about 5 generations ago and about 5 years old. We’re not sure why some users might still be using iOS 8, but if you are and can’t upgrade to iOS 9, there is a good chance that you are using a very old device and it might be time to upgrade anyway.

We imagine that WhatsApp is only implementing these changes because the number of users that will be affected by this is minimal. The company also warns against running WhatsApp on jailbroken devices, stating that they will not be able to provide support for those who are using WhatsApp on jailbroken iPhones.

According to WhatsApp, “We don’t explicitly restrict the use of jailbroken or unlocked devices. However, because these modifications might affect the functionality of your device, we can’t provide support for devices using modified versions of the iPhone’s operating system.”

iOS 13 Touch ID Bug Could Be Messing Up Banking Apps

There was a point in time where Apple would release iOS updates that were riddled with bugs. Apple later clamped down on this by promising that future updates will have better quality checks, and this was true for a while, but it’s starting to feel like things could be slipping once again.

This is because in yet another iOS 13 bug, it seems to be messing with the way users log into their banking apps. Basically, if you’re still using an iPhone that comes with Touch ID, you might encounter issues where you won’t be able to log into your banking app because the prompt to use Touch ID simply does not appear.

This also seems to affect password managers such as 1Password where the prompt just does not show up. However, as it turns out, the alert dialog box for Touch ID is actually still there, it’s just not being shown due to a bug. There is no fix at the moment, but it seems that you can go ahead and authenticate yourself normally by placing your finger on the Touch ID button.

We’re not sure why the prompt isn’t showing up, but we imagine that this might be frustrating to users who do not know that it is there, simply just hidden. Recently, there have been several other bugs discovered in iOS 13, one of which granted third-party keyboards full access even if the user did not grant it.

Free Pilot Episodes Could Be Netflix’s Answer To Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus

Over the years, Netflix has steadily increased the price of its subscription. Customers mostly had no choice as there weren’t that many streaming services around, but then came along Apple and Disney, both of whom announced their own streaming services in the form of Apple TV Plus and Disney Plus.

This poses a threat to Netflix in terms of pricing and offerings, where Apple has vast resources that they could easily spend to get new shows, while Disney has Marvel and Star Wars to help bolster their platform, so what can Netflix do? Turns out that maybe offering free pilot episodes could be one way to do it.

Netflix has recently announced that the first pilot episode for its new series, Bard of Blood, can be streamed by just about anyone for free. At the moment, only the first episode of Bard of Blood is offered for free, but we imagine that it could be expanded where more shows could have their pilots offered for free in a bid to tempt customers into subscribing to Netflix.

Whether or not this will work remains to be seen, but given that quite a bit of Netflix’s catalogue is dependent on licensing, which can be revoked or not extended, this could be a good idea for now.

Google Duplex on mobile Chrome will soon let you buy movie tickets

Duplex is one of Google’s most interesting, and sometimes most worrying, products to be revealed in recent years. It combines a few key Google technologies, including Google Assistant, Search and Knowledge Graph, language processing, and, of course, machine learning. When it first came out, it was at the service of those trying to book restaurants or even services. Now Duplex … Continue reading

Apple's improved Maps expand across the northeast US

Apple is starting to roll out its major Maps update more broadly across the US. It overhauled the app for iOS 13 with revamped maps for parts of California and Texas, and now it’s expanding its new and improved Maps across the northeast US.

This ‘Space Plane’ Could Fly From London To Sydney In Just 4 Hours

The problem with travel is that sometimes it involves long flight times. Unless you can afford the comforts of business class, safe to say that no one truly enjoys being stuck on an 8-12 hour flight in the cramped seats of economy. However, the good news is that this discomfort could soon be reduced somewhat.

This is according to the UK Space Agency who announced that together with the Australian Space Agency, they will be working on the “world-first Space Bridge”. This comes in the form of the Synergetic Air-Breathing Rocket Engine (SABRE) engine from Reaction Engines that could potentially reduce the time it takes to fly from London to Sydney by as much as 80%, resulting in a flight time of four hours.

Based on the early tests of the SABRE engine, they have found that in simulated conditions, it could hit Mach 3.3, which is roughly three times the speed of sound and it also makes it 50% faster than the cruising speed of the Concorde. It also matches the speed of the Lockheed R-71 Blackbird, the fastest jet aircraft ever made.

Now, before you get too excited at the idea of supersonic flight, note that we are still a very long way off from it being made a reality. According to Graham Turnock, head of the UK Space Agency, “When we have brought the SABRE rocket engine to fruition, that may enable us to get to Australia in perhaps as little as four hours. This is technology that could definitely deliver that. We’re talking the 2030s for operational service, and the work is already very advanced.”

iPads, MacBooks With Mini-LED Displays Could Arrive Late 2020

Apple has been starting to transition to OLED screens. It first started with the Apple Watch and it later expanded to the iPhone, and we expect that in the future, it will find its way to the iPad and MacBooks as well. However, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, that might not be 100% accurate.

According to the analyst, he claims that instead of OLED, Apple could instead turn to the use of mini-LEDs. Kuo believes that there are a couple of reasons as to why Apple could use mini-LEDs instead of OLED. One of those reasons is that mini-LEDs could help avoid burn-in issues. Another reason is that they might be easier to produce compared to OLED.

Last but not least, it could help Apple reduce their dependence on Samsung, who for now supplies Apple with the majority of their OLED panels. Instead, Apple could potentially turn to LG for their mini-LED needs. In terms of the advantages mini-LEDs have over OLED, they could potentially allow for thinner and lighter devices, offer a wide color gamut, higher contrast, and HDR.

As for which Apple devices could receive the new hardware, Kuo claims that it will find its way to “high-end” iPads and MacBooks in late 2020 or mid-2021, so it seems that we won’t be seeing it anytime soon.

Researchers Looking To Develop Electric Car Batteries That Could Last A Million Miles

Like all batteries, the batteries found in electric cars have a limited lifespan. This means that eventually at some point in time, they will start to degrade in which they will stop offering up the same range as they once did when they were brand new. However, researchers are hoping to fix it.

In a paper published in the The Journal of the Electrochemical Society, researchers at Halifax, Nova Scotia’s Dalhousie University could have potentially found a way to double the current lifespan of lithium-ion batteries. As it stands, batteries powering our electric cars are estimated to last 500,000 miles, but if this research proves successful, it could double that amount where it could last 1 million miles.

In addition to lasting 1 million miles, this research suggest that the battery could last for 4,000 charging cycles while only losing 10% of its charging capacity as it reaches the end of its lifespan. Now, most car owners probably do not drive their cars until the 1 million mile mark, but it seems that this battery tech could use useful for vehicles that are constantly on the road, like taxis, delivery trucks, and so on.

We’re not sure when we can expect to see these batteries make their way into electric cars, but we imagine that it will probably be a while, so don’t hold your breath just yet.

Mac Pros might be a more expensive as Apple tariff relief gets denied

The US government’s blacklists and tariffs were meant to send a strong statement to China and pressure the latter in its ongoing trade and political spat. Unfortunately, it won’t just be the Chinese economy that will get affected as even the US tech market will soon feel the aftermath. The Mac Pros, already one of the more expensive computers in … Continue reading
