The Salvation Army’s Famous Donation Kettle Now Supports Apple Pay And Google Pay

If you’ve ever walked past someone representing the Salvation Army, there’s a good chance you might have seen them rely on their iconic red kettle in which you can drop in cash that will be used towards donations. This has been a tradition for over 100 years now, and it looks like it is about to get a modern and hi-tech makeover.

It seems that if you walk past a Salvation Army volunteer with the red kettle, you’ll actually be able to donate to it using mobile payment methods such as Apple Pay or Google Pay. This means that no longer will you have the excuse of not having enough change on your person to make a donation.

This is not exactly a new idea as the Salvation Army had previously tested it out last year, where the idea is that it is hoped that the modern approach of donating will appeal to the younger crowd. While it wasn’t exactly the runaway success that they were hoping for, we suppose having more options is not a bad thing.

In the meantime, the Salvation Army is not alone in trying to use mobile payments to elicit donations. Just last year, we had heard that the Church of Englandhad also started to accept mobile payments like Apple Pay and Google Pay for donations.

This Keychain-Sized Controller Lets You Take It Anywhere

When it comes to gaming, depending on how seriously you take it, there are some gamers who prefer using gaming controllers even when playing on their smartphones. It makes sense because there are some games that just benefit from being played using physical controllers, such as racing or fighting games, where the nuances from a physical controller is heaps better than virtual controls.

However, it isn’t always practical to bring a game controller wherever you go unless you have a bag with you, but the good news is that 8BitDo is hoping to solve that problem with its Zero 2 Bluetooth Gamepad. As you can see from the photo, this is a game controller that is small enough to fit onto a keychain, meaning that you can easily stuff this inside your pocket and you’re good to go.

The fact that it is Bluetooth means that we imagine pairing it with your smartphone or tablet should be a cinch. It will also play nice with computers like PCs and Macs, so you can even game while you’re on the go. It also seems that it will be compatible with the Nintendo Switch so if you need a third controller, this will work in a pinch.

The Zero 2 Bluetooth Gamepad is currently available for pre-order on Amazon where it is priced at $20. Note that on its website it lists support for the PC, Switch macOS, and Android, so we’re not sure if there is support for iOS devices.

Tile Introduces New Smart Alert Features For Its Trackers

According to the rumors, Apple is set to launch its own set of Tile-like tracking accessories. When exactly that will happen remains to be seen, but it seems that ahead of Apple launching said accessory, the folks at Tile have been working at pumping out new features, one of those being Smart Alerts.

With this new feature, what it does is that it will alert you after five minutes if you have left the location and the item is not with you. For example, this will be useful for things like bags, coats, and umbrellas, where you might forget to take them with you after you leave the library, coffee shop, office, and so on.

For those who might be worried about false alarms, not to worry as you will be able to set “safe zones”, meaning that if an item is in a location designated as your “safe zone”, then the alerts won’t be sent. For example if it’s a clear sunny day and you leave home, which has been set as your safe zone, without your coat or umbrella, it won’t ping you about it.

That being said, the only downside to this feature is that you will need to subscribe to Tile Premium at $30 year. Also, we should point out that Smart Alerts is currently only in beta so there could be some bugs that Tile has yet to iron yet.

Fujifilm X-H2 Might Have Been Cancelled

Fujifilm’s flagship camera lineup used to consist of the Fujifilm X-Pro and X-T series, but in 2018, Fujifilm decided to add a new camera to the lineup in the form of the X-H series starting with the X-H1. The camera was Fujifilm’s way of showing that they cared about videographers and included some features aimed at making video capture better.

However, according to a report from Fuji Addict, it seems that the X-H1’s successor, presumably the X-H2, may never see the light of day. Their sources are telling them that within Fujifilm, there is some disagreement about the fate of the camera, with some feeling that it needs to be discontinued while others thinking it should be given a second chance.

Their sources also tell them that Fujifilm is expected to hold a meeting at the end of November where the fate of the series will be discussed, although it has been suggested that the majority of people at Fujifilm seem to want to move on without it. Instead, it seems that Fujifilm could possibly bring some X-H1 features over to its X-Pro or X-T series.

For example, it was recently reported that the X-T4 could come with in-body image stabilization, a feature that debuted with the X-H1. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but if we don’t see an X-H2 in 2020, there’s a good chance it might have been cancelled.

Amazon Wants To Bring Alexa To Low-Powered Devices

Software usually requires a certain level of hardware to run, and depending on the application, it could be run by just about any device, or only a device with enough power. This in turn creates limitations since not all devices are created equal, but this is something that Amazon is hoping to overcome as they are eyeing the possibility of bringing Alexa to low-powered devices.

So what do we mean by that? In case you didn’t know, for a device to power Alexa Voice Services, it would need at least 100MB of RAM and an ARM Cortex A-class processor. However, Amazon has since lowered those requirements where it only requires as little as 1MB of RAM and a Cortex M-class processor.

This is excellent news for hardware makers who are hoping to incorporate Alexa into more devices as it means that they can soon start to use it with devices like lightbulbs, light switches, toys, thermometers, and more. Speaking to TechCrunch, AWS IoT VP Dirk Didascalou said, “We now offload the vast majority of all of this to the cloud. The only thing that the device still needs to do is wake word detection.”

This is actually pretty exciting news and will only serve to strengthen Amazon’s hold on the IoT market.

A $1.4 Million Video Game Character Was Accidentally Sold For $552

How much would you be willing to pay for an in-game item? In the past, we have seen people bid crazy amounts of money for in-game items, and we’ve also seen players spend a ton of money for cosmetics and other perks that gives their characters an advantage over others in games.

That being said, a recent report from the South China Morning Post has shed some light on just how much people are willing to spend on their characters, where it was revealed that one gamer who plays MMORPG Justice Online spent $1.4 million on his character, only to have his friend accidentally sell it off for a meager $552.

Now, $552 is still a lot of money to pay for a video game character, but it’s a drop in the pond when you think about how much was invested in the character to begin with. According to the report, the man had loaned his friend (former friend?) the character, only to have his “friend” try to sell it back to him for over $50,000.

However, in the process of trying to sell it back to him, he listed it on NetEase’s in-game marketplace for $552 where another player swooped in and purchased it. The man had initially filed a lawsuit against NetEase and his friend, but a judge mediating the case led it towards a settlement where his character was ultimately returned to him.

Tesla’s Cybertruck Goes Up Against Ford’s F-150 In A Tug-Of-War

When it comes to pickup trucks, it’s hard to beat Ford’s F-150 which is one of the best-selling vehicles in the US for the past few decades. However, Tesla decided to take Ford on at their own game by announcing the Cybertruck, a futuristic all-electric pickup truck. Only time will tell how well the Cybertruck will do, but in the meantime, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk decided to show off what their truck could do.

In a video shared on Twitter, it shows how the Cybertruck is going up against the Ford F-150 in an uphill tug-of-war, where both trucks are essentially tugging away from each other to see who will win. Based on the video, it looks like the Cybertruck managed to beat the F-150, but many have pointed out that this might not be a fair fight.

For starters, the F-150 in the video is said to be the rear-wheel drive version and as such, its position does put it at a bit of a disadvantage. Also, some have mentioned that the version in the video is a lower-spec model of the truck, so it might not be a 100% fair comparison again the Cybertruck.

Some are also claiming that the Cybertruck got a head start on the F-150. That being said, in light of this, Ford’s VP Sunny Madra has since called out Musk on this, asking Tesla’s CEO to send over a Cybertruck for their own comparison. Musk has since responded that he’s game, but whether or not we’ll be seeing that video remains to be seen.
