LG Android 10 Desktop Mode might be heralding a huge change

It was rather odd that LG, who needs every bit of good publicity it can get, was so silent about the Desktop Mode feature it sneaked in with its UX 9.0 Android 10 update. After all, it’s no small thing when you’re offering a power user feature few aside from Samsung and Huawei have. It turns out, that silence might … Continue reading

Facebook’s New AI Allows Robots To Navigate Without The Use Of Maps

Devices like Roombas rely on maps to find their way around your home. This is done by the robot moving around and when it detects an obstacle, it marks it down, and ultimately this creates a map of the room so that it knows where it can or cannot go. However, Facebook thinks that they might have developed an AI for robots that could potentially eliminate the need for maps.

According to Facebook, the downside to using maps is that it can become outdated. For example, shifting furniture around would essentially result in the older map being obsolete. However, according to Facebook, they have created a new distributed reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm called DD-PPO, which they believe solves that problem.

Facebook believes that with this new algorithm, it will be capable of creating robots that can navigate an area without the need for maps, where it is also said to be capable of reaching its destination 99.9% of the time and with only a 3% deviation from the ideal path. This means that in theory, you could place a robot in a room or an area without a map and it should be able to find its way to its destination.

However, as Facebook notes, there is still a lot of work left to be done. “We look forward to exploring new solutions to RGB-only point-goal navigation, which is important because compass and GPS data can be noisy or simply unavailable in indoor spaces. We will also apply DD-PPO-trained models to different tasks.”

It Looks Like Apple Hasn’t Completely Abandoned Touch ID Just Yet

With Apple ditching Touch ID on the iPhone and iPad, it feels like the company could be ready to completely give up the technology, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. According to a recently discovered patent, it only seems to fuel the rumors that Apple could actually be looking to bring an in-display fingerprint sensor to future iPhones.

According to the patent’s description, it reads, “Touch screens, in particular, are becoming increasingly popular because of their ease and versatility of operation as well as their declining price. Touch screens can include a touch sensor and a display device positioned partially or fully behind the touch sensor so that the touch-sensitive surface can cover at least a portion of the active area of the display device.”

There have been rumors that for 2020’s iPhone, Apple could actually be looking to bring back Touch ID by embedding it into the display of the phone. Other companies such as OnePlus and Samsung have already launched similar devices, so in this instance, Apple would actually be late to the party.

While Apple is most probably not ditching Face ID, giving users more options to unlock their devices is not necessarily a bad thing. Whether or not this patent is realized remains to be seen.

Price Of Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Leaked, And It Won’t Be Cheap

According to the rumors, Samsung is said to be working on a new foldable smartphone. However, unlike the Galaxy Fold, the upcoming foldable handset will be similar in design to a flip phone, except with a flexible display in the middle. Now thanks to a report out of Korea from Naver, the alleged price of the phone has been leaked.

Based on the leak, it seems that the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip will be priced at 1.6 million won, which after conversion is roughly around $1,374. This is actually cheaper than the Galaxy Fold, but then again, this is a smaller device with a smaller display, so it shouldn’t be too surprising that it is cheaper.

However, even at $1,374, it is still considerably more expensive than other flagship phones out there, but chances are you are paying to be an early adopter. It also makes it ever so slightly cheaper than the Motorola Razr, where it was recently announced that it would be going on sale next month where it would be priced at $1,500.

Samsung has yet to officially announce the Galaxy Z Flip, but the company will be hosting a Galaxy Unpacked event on the 11th of February where we expect that more details about the phone will be shared, along with the announcement for the Galaxy S20, Samsung’s first flagship handset of 2020.
