Pixel 2 finally gets Live Caption, sideloading required

The Pixel 4 may have been a dud rather than a bang when it came to hardware but, as with other Pixels before it, Google has more or less made up for it in terms of software. In addition to the usual AI-based camera tricks, the Pixel 4 flaunted a few features that, technically speaking, is part of the general … Continue reading

Twitter’s CEO Shuts Down The Idea Of An ‘Edit’ Button

Whenever a tweet is made, that’s pretty much it. There is no going back and there is no editing what you tweeted. Sure, you can delete it, but due to the internet archive and also people who are quick to save tweets, especially if you’re someone prolific, there is really no way of completely erasing your tweets once it’s been posted.

This has led to a lot of misunderstandings where people had to post more tweets to clarify what they said. Back in 2018, Twitter said that they were mulling the idea of creating an “edit” button, but in a recent WIRED Q&A video, Twitter’s CEO Jack Dorsey basically said that the edit button will not be coming.

According to Dorsey, he effectively stated that this goes against the very concept of Twitter to begin with. The CEO explained by saying, “We started as an SMS, text message service. And as you all know, when you send a text, you can’t really take it back. We wanted to preserve that vibe, that feeling, in the early days.”

Dorsey’s comments essentially down any hope of seeing an edit button, at least not anytime soon. Back in 2019, Dorsey still seemed like he was on board with the idea, where he hinted that maybe Twitter could implement a “clarify” feature for users to clarify their tweets. We’re not sure if that feature is still coming, so for now, it’s probably best to think not twice, but maybe thrice before you make that tweet.

Apple’s AirPods Reportedly Accounted For 71% Of True Wireless Headphone Revenue In 2019

Walk about the streets these days and you would be hardpressed to find someone without Apple’s AirPods sitting in their ears. In fact, did you know that Apple’s AirPods are so popular that as far as the true wireless headphone market is concerned, Apple managed to nab about 71% of the market’s revenue?

This is according to a report from Strategy Analytics who claims that back in 2019, Apple sold about 60 million AirPods and also managed to earn 71% of the revenue from that particular market. According to Strategy Analytics, they believe that Apple is expected to continue their dominance for the next five years.

This is actually surprising when you consider that when Apple first launched the AirPods, no one really gave it much thought. Many had in fact made fun of it, but time has proven that the AirPods are becoming a must-have item for iPhone owners due to their portable nature and also how quickly and easily they pair with iOS devices.

Apple has also since released the AirPods Pro, a variant of the AirPods with better sound quality and active noise cancellation. Not too long ago, there was even a slightly outlandish rumor that said that Apple could be considering bundling the AirPods with its 2020 iPhones. However, we doubt that this is true as it would effectively mean a lot of lost sales for the company.

This Switch Accessory Lets You Mount The Pro Controller To The Console

The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is a great accessory as it definitely feels a lot better to play with compared to the Joy-Cons. However, it isn’t quite as practical to bring with you on the go as you would need to stand up the console on a table or a surface, but the folks at Columbus Circle might have the answer to that problem.

The company has unveiled a new Switch accessory that lets you mount the Switch onto your Pro Controller. As you can see in the image above, this basically puts a clamp on the Pro Controller where you can either choose to mount the Switch Lite or the regular Switch console where it will sit on top of your controller.

This means that if you wanted to play the Switch while using the Pro Controller without having to find a table or surface to rest your console on, this could be it. It’s actually a pretty clever idea and we’re not sure why there aren’t more of these accessories available. It will be released on the 21st of January in Japan where it will be priced at 1,738 yen.

We’re not sure if there are plans to eventually bring it stateside, but we imagine that it probably won’t be too long until we start seeing more lookalikes released in the market by the competition.

Instagram Reportedly Fact-Checking Photoshopped Images On Its Platform

Instagram is a platform where users share photos. It is also where photographers and other creatives use it as a medium where they can showcase their portfolio to prospective clients. However, it seems that it could soon get a lot trickier for some to use the platform in that manner.

According to the original report, photographer Toby Harriman discovered that while scrolling through his Instagram feed, a “False Information” warning popped up. It was an image of a man standing on rainbow-colored mountains which clearly had been photoshopped and manipulated.

While we can appreciate how seriously Facebook and Instagram takes fake news these days, the art of photo manipulation isn’t new and when done right, it can be downright impressive. For Instagram’s algorithms to consider such images to be “fake news” doesn’t seem like a very appropriate label, and could hinder artists from showcasing their work to prospective clients.

Facebook has since responded to the report in a statement that reads, “We don’t hide content because it’s photoshopped, we apply a label when a fact-checker has rated it. Upon review from the fact checker, they changed the rating, so it is no longer being labelled as false on Instagram and Facebook.” It does seem like extra work, but perhaps the algorithm could be fine tuned to better distinguish between works of art and photos that have been clearly manipulated to send the wrong message.

WordPress Admin Bug Lets Anyone Login As An Admin

WordPress is one of the main platforms powering many websites and blogs that you read today. It is an incredibly popular platform augmented by the fact that there is a very active developer scene where there are a ton of plugins that users can use to improve their website. However, it seems that not all plugins were created equal.

According to a recent report, it seems that a recent bug has been discovered in the InfiniteWP Client plugin, where if exploited, it would allow just about anyone to log into a website running the platform as an admin, and they wouldn’t even need the password to begin with! To make matters worse, this is a particularly popular plugin.

It has been estimated that it is currently installed on over 300,000 websites at the very least, meaning that hundreds of thousands of websites are affected. The good news is that the plugin’s maker, Revmakx, has since patched the flaw after the vulnerability was disclosed. If you are running the plugin on your website, then you probably want to update it to the latest version to close the loophole.

It is unclear if there were any websites that might have been affected and exploited due to this flaw, but we haven’t heard any reports yet so for now, it seems like it was patched in time.
