Nest smart thermostats will detect HVAC problems before they happen

Our homes today are equipped with some smart device or another, even if it’s just a smart TV. But despite their seemingly intelligent features, not many of them are smart enough to foresee problems in advance. That may be true for their own self-diagnostics but even less for diagnosing other smart devices. That’s where Google Nest is trying to lead … Continue reading

Blizzard Owns Your Custom Warcraft 3: Reforged Games

It is a fact somewhat lost to time—though certainly not one Blizzard will ever forget—that the eternally enduring MOBA genre got its start in Blizzard games. Riot and Valve, however, ended up reaping the rewards of seeds that were sown by custom game-makers in StarCraft and Warcraft 3. After a 2012 lawsuit, Valve even…

Australian Lab Manages To Recreate The Coronavirus

The new coronavirus is proving to be a bigger issue than some had initially thought, where it seems to be spreading to various parts of the world despite the best efforts by various governments and health organizations to contain it. However, there is some good news as over in Australia, scientists have managed to recreate the virus in a lab.

Now, some might be thinking, why on earth would you want to recreate such a deadly disease? This is because by being able to replicate the virus in a lab, it would be useful when it comes to testing vaccines against it. It will also allow scientists to better understand the nature of the virus which in turn would help develop a test to see if a person is infected with it before they start showing symptoms.

The lab in Australia will be sharing their findings with the WHO, who will then be sharing it with labs around the world in a race to try and find a vaccine as quickly as possible. It should be noted that the Australian lab is actually not the first to have recreated it. A lab in China is said to have done so as well, but they did not make their findings available to the WHO.

Previously, it was also reported that over in Hong Kong, researchers have managed to create a potential vaccine for the virus, although they suggested that it could be a while before it makes its way to humans. However, the recent success of the Australian lab could potentially help speed things up.

In the meantime, if you’re looking to keep track of where the virus has spread, you’ll be able to do so via an online tracker.

iPhone With Touch ID In Power Button Could Arrive In 2021

If the rumors are to be believed, Apple is not quite done with Touch ID just yet. The company is rumored to be looking to bring Touch ID to 2020’s iPhones by embedding it under the display, similar to what several other Android manufacturers have done. However, it also seems that Apple could be looking to embed it in other ways.

According to a recent research note released by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, he claims that in 2021, Apple could have a new iPhone in the works that could see Touch ID embedded into the power button of the phone itself. This is a similar style that we had previously seen companies like Sony use, and it looks like it could be adopted by Apple next year.

However, it seems that this is for a lower-end iPhone model that will continue using an LCD screen instead of OLED. Kuo had previously reported on such a device, where he said that the phone will not use Face ID, and now it looks like we know how Apple plans on protecting it. The embedding of Touch ID in the power button will also allow Apple to create a near edge-to-edge design, similar to its current iPhone lineup.

It is unclear if this will be the iPhone SE 3 or if it could be the third-gen iPhone XR, but either way with it launching in the first half of 2021, we still have quite a ways to go before we learn about it. Until then, take it with a grain of salt.

Netflix Announces Live-Action One Piece Series

There are probably thousands of manga currently in circulation at this moment, but when it comes to the best-selling manga, there’s no denying that at the moment, that title belongs to One Piece. For fans of the series, prepare for some excellent news as Netflix has announced that a live-action series based on the manga will be coming to its platform.

It should be noted that rumors of a live-action series of One Piece has been making its rounds for a while now, but this is the first official confirmation that we’ve gotten. The series will consist of 10 episodes, although we’re not sure if this will be a one-off thing based on a particular story arc, or if it will be the first season and that there will be more to follow, assuming it does well.

According to Netflix, they have “partnered with Tomorrow Studios and Shueisha to bring this pirate adventure story from Japan to audiences around the world. The original manga, written by Eiichiro Oda, has captivated fans for many years and sold over 460 million copies.” There is currently no word on who has been cast as whom, and when it will be released.

Given the somewhat fantastical nature of various mangas/animes, it will be interesting to see how it will be interpreted in a live-action series, and whether or not it will be able to remain faithful to the tone and story of the series that is beloved by fans around the world.

Apple Reportedly Pulls Its AI From The Pentagon’s Drone Program

Apple isn’t exactly known for having military contracts. The closest they have ever gotten was when they teamed up with the Pentagon to develop high-tech wearables for the military. However, the company did find themselves with a military contract when they acquired AI startup, Xnor.ai.

But it looks like Apple really doesn’t want anything to do with the military because according to a report from The Information (paywall), it seems that Apple has decided to pull out of it. If they had stayed in it, they would have been part of the Pentagon’s AI project known as the Algorithmic Warfare Cross-Functional Team.

This basically uses AI to help identify objects and people recorded in videos by drones. Currently, object and human identification from such videos still need to be analyzed by humans, but by using AI, it could help speed things up in the identification process, which in turn could help facilitate autonomous warfare.

It is unclear why Apple might have pulled out (the company has yet to make any kind of official confirmation or acknowledgement), but if you recall, Google faced a great deal of scrutiny from the public and its employees when they entered into a military contract with the US Department of Defense, ultimately resulting in them opting not to renew it. It is possible that Apple could be looking to avoid similar controversy and backlash as well.

Waymo And UPS Team Up For Self-Driving Delivery Vans

As a delivery and logistics company, UPS has been rather aggressive in finding new high-tech ways of staying ahead of the competition. The company has explored the possibility of using drones to help make deliveries, and now it seems that they are looking at the possibility of self-driving delivery vans.

This is done by teaming up with Alphabet’s Waymo, which for those unfamiliar, has been looking to develop self-driving technologies. These self-driving vans will not be used to make the actual deliveries, but rather they will be used to shuttle packages collected at various UPS Store locations to a local UPS sorting facility where they will be processed.

According to Scott Price, UPS chief strategy and transformation officer, “UPS and Waymo are exploring automated and autonomous technologies to enhance network operations. Getting packages to our sortation facilities sooner and more frequently, while also creating an opportunity for later drop-offs for next-day service, can add enormous value for our customers.”

UPS is definitely not the first company to explore new ways of making deliveries. For example, back in 2019, Domino’s teamed up with Nuro to test self-driving robots that can deliver pizzas to customers. Companies like 7-Eleven have also explored the idea of using drones to make deliveries of purchases directly to customers.

Google Launches A New Video Sharing App For DIY Tutorials

When it comes to tutorial videos on just about anything, YouTube is still pretty much the platform to go to. However, with the rise of Instagram Stories and TikTok where the focus is on short-form video content, it seems like Google is trying to find an answer to that, which they might have in the form of a new app called Tangi.

The app, which is short for TeAch aNd GIve, is coming out of Google’s Area 120, which is basically home to the company’s various experimental projects. The idea is that with Tangi, users will be able to create and share up to 60-second videos on a variety of topics related to DIY projects.

This includes crafts, cooking, clothing, and makeup, just to name a few. According to Google, “It’s an experimental social video sharing app with quick DIY videos that help people learn new things every day. Tangi is where creative people can get new ideas and connect with other passionate people like them.”

At the moment, Tangi is only available for iOS devices and can be downloaded via the App Store. There is no word on when it will be coming to Android, and also for now, uploading will be limited to a handful of creators, but there are plans to eventually open it up to more users in the future.
