Ring Doorbell App Sends Data To Facebook & Others Says EFF

Amazon-owned Ring, which is popularly known for its home security systems is now being criticized for its data collection techniques.

Not just how it works – but the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) published an article to share their findings regarding the data collection using Ring app on Android.

They identified that the app includes several third-party trackers to collect your personal information – which is potentially enough to help you make a unique profile for a user to facilitate surveillance.

Overall, they found that several different bits of information were being sent over to different trackers.

Not just limited to your name but your email address, local IP, sensors, carrier information, mobile resolution, OS info and a few more unique identifiers that can easily help someone to keep an eye on you (digitally).

It even sends some information to the Google-owned crash logging service Crashalytics – however, they still have to confirm what it sends.

In the report by EFF, they have also explained “what” and “how” exactly the Ring app works and collects the information.

They have also mentioned how they found the privacy breaches that voids the primary target of a company that focuses on home security devices. Ring Inc. hasn’t yet responded to the report. We shall keep an eye out for their official response to this report.
