Facebook Wants To Pay You For Your Voice Recordings

Remember that time Facebook tried to pay users to give up some of their privacy? It seems that Facebook has no qualms about that approach because the company has since announced a new program called “Pronunciations”. With this new program, Facebook is offering to pay users for their voice recordings.

So, how much will Facebook be paying users? According to the breakdown, Facebook will be paying users in points, which can later be cashed out. Each successful set of voice recordings will pay 200 points. However, users will only be able to cash out once they have accumulated at least 1,000 points, which is a $5 reward that will be paid through PayPal.

If you’re feeling a bit iffy about this and the privacy implications behind it, Facebook notes that these recordings will not be connected to your Facebook profile whatsoever, and that your activities will not be shared with Facebook or other Facebook-owned services without your permission.

That being said, not everyone will be able to participate in this program. There will be a minimum age limit of 18 and that it is only open to those living in the US. Also, users will need to sign up to participate in it, and that not everyone may necessarily qualify.

AI Helps Discover Powerful New Antibiotics That Can Fight Drug-Resistant Strains

Whenever you suffer from an infection, doctors generally prescribe antibiotics. The problem with antibiotics is that it’s a seemingly never-ending game of whack-a-mole, where what might work today, might not work the next. This is because bacteria mutates and evolves where it eventually gets to the point that the antibiotic you took might not work anymore.

Like we said, this can be a problem as it means that researchers have to constantly try to figure out their next step. However, it seems that the medical industry might have just gotten a helping hand thanks to AI, which has helped them discover potentially new powerful antibiotics that can fight against some of the more drug-resistant strains of bacteria out there today.

To train the AI, researchers taught it by showing it what kind of molecules kill bacteria. They tend fed the AI with a library of around 2,500 drugs and natural compounds, and how well these drugs work against the growth of the E coli bug. Once the AI was trained, the researchers then set it on a path of looking at over 6,000 compounds that are currently under investigation for treating various human diseases, and then getting to look for compounds that might seem effective.

They also taught it to think outside the box, where these compounds not only look effective, but are also unlike existing antibiotics. This in turn would allow the antibiotics to be more effective as it would allow it to combat bacteria that has yet to get a chance to develop resistance to. This seems to be particularly effective because according to the researchers, the process took a matter of hours.

The researchers are now hoping that they can apply the algorithm to find antibiotics that are more selective in the bacteria that they kill, and that eventually, they are hoping that this could also allow them to create brand new antibiotics from scratch.

Upcoming Fujifilm Instax Mini 11 Photos Leaked

While digital cameras have more or less become the standard we’ve come to know and expect these days, there’s a certain nostalgic charm with film-based cameras that is hard to ignore. However, if you’d rather not go through the trouble of developing the film yourself or paying someone else to do it, instant cameras are a good alternative.

In fact, it seems that Fujifilm could have a new instant camera in the works in the form of the Fujifilm Instax Mini 11. This is according to a series of leaked photos obtained by Nokishita Camera where it shows off the upcoming camera in a variety of bright colors. Unfortunately, the specs of the Instax Mini 11 aren’t known, but its concept should remain the same as its predecessors, where it will be capable of printing photos on the fly.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the Instax series, these are a series of cameras that can print photos the moment they are taken. Granted they might not have the highest resolution or come with a ton of control, but they are fun for parties and gatherings like weddings or birthdays, where they can be instantly printed and given out to guests who can keep them as a souvenir.

There is no word on when the camera will be launched, but the rumors are claiming that Fujifilm is expected to host an event next week where they could announce the Fujifilm X-T4, so perhaps we’ll learn more about the Instax Mini 11 then as well.

Sony, Prophesee Announce Development Of Stacked Event-Based Vision Sensor

One of the main hardware components that helps determine how good a camera captures images is its sensor. While the marketing department of companies tend to focus on the megapixel mount of the sensors, there is more to it than that, where there have been innovations made that we think might be more interesting than the camera’s resolution.

In fact, recently both Sony and Prophesee (formerly known as Chronocam, a company that Intel invested in) have announced that they are working together to develop a stacked event-based vision sensor. What does this mean? For those unfamiliar, basically a stacked sensor is a sensor that comes with several layers on it.

This means that there is a layer dedicated to collecting image data, a layer for processing that data, and in some cases, a layer for DRAM that will enable faster video frame rates (amongst other things).

With this new sensor, Sony and Prophesee are claiming to have created the “industry’s smallest 4.86μm pixel size and the industry’s highest 124dB (or more) HDR performance”. The sensor will be capable of detecting luminance changes in each pixel asynchronously and will also be able to output data like the coordinates and time for when a change is detected.

Ultimately, this is expected to result in higher efficiency, faster speeds, and lower latency data output. The companies envision that the use of this sensor could used for machine learning purposes, where it can be used to detect fast moving objects in a variety of environments and conditions.

The ‘Friends’ Reunion Is Officially Happening On HBO Max This May

Despite having come to a satisfying and emotional conclusion more than 15 years ago, the “Friends” TV show is still being talked about today where many are clamoring for a reunion of sorts. The good news is that if you’re a huge Friends fan and would love to see the cast get back together, you’re in luck.

HBO has recently announced that this coming May, the Friends reunion will officially be happening, although not necessarily in the way you think. This was confirmed by Kevin Reilly, chief content officer for HBO Max who said, “Guess you could call this the one where they all got back together — we are reuniting with David, Jennifer, Courteney, Matt, Lisa, and Matthew for an HBO Max special that will be programmed alongside the entire Friends library.”

So what will this reunion be about? Unfortunately, like we said, it might not be what you were hoping, which we imagine is a new season of episodes. Instead, this will be a one-off special unscripted episode that will be filmed on the original soundstage on the Warner Bros. Studio lot in Burbank.

It will be interesting to see how this episode will turn out, especially given its unscripted nature, and how well Friends will hold up in today’s climate and whether or not all the waiting and hype is worth it.
