iOS ‘CarKey’ Feature Lets You Send Digital Keys Over Messages

Earlier this month, the iOS 13.4 beta revealed that Apple had an upcoming feature in the form of a digital car key, where users would, in theory, be able to use their iPhones to unlock their (compatible) cars. Now upon further investigation, more details about the upcoming feature has been revealed.

As with smart locks, it seems that the CarKey feature of iOS will actually allow users to send digital keys to other users through the Messages app. This means that in theory, you could send the keys to your car to someone, like a friend or family member, over a text message and they’ll be able to unlock your car.

This will be useful if you’re overseas and you need someone to move your car. It can also be handy if someone left something in your car and they need to get it, but you can’t meet them and unlock the car for them. It has also been suggested that this could be useful for services like valet, where you can create a temporary key while retaining the actual physical one yourself for safety and security reasons.

While such technology isn’t exactly new, it is expected that Apple could be working with car makers to integrate the feature into cars, much like CarPlay. We’re not sure if there could be an aftermarket version, but we’ll have to wait for the feature to officially launch before we can get more details about it.

Apple has been rumored to be hosting an event on the 31st of March where they will be announcing the new iPhone SE 2. Assuming iOS 13.4 hasn’t been launched then, perhaps we will hear more about the feature then.

Researchers Use A Low-Tech Hack To Trick A Tesla Into Speeding Up Unnecessarily

Cars these days are getting smarter where they come with a variety of sensors and cameras on board that can warn drivers of obstacles. All of this seems to be paving the way towards a future of self-driving cars, but it seems that there still needs to be some work done on them, especially when they can be tricked with a simple two-inch piece of tape.

In a recent demonstration by McAfee, they show how a Tesla car using Mobileye’s EyeQ3 camera system, can be fooled into unnecessarily speeding up by 50 miles per hour. Basically, the camera system reads speed limit signs. That information is then analyzed by the car which then determines the appropriate speed to drive while in cruise control (or Autopilot).

However, the researchers show that by adding a two-inch piece of black tape to a speed limit sign that reads 35 miles per hour, it tricked the system into reading it as 85 miles per hour, thus forcing the car to speed up from a nice gentle drive into a harrowing one.

According to Steve Povolny, a member of McAfee’s Advanced Threat Research team who was part of the research, “What we’re trying to do is we’re really trying to raise awareness for both consumers and vendors of the types of flaws that are possible. We are not trying to spread fear and say that if you drive this car, it will accelerate into through a barrier, or to sensationalize it.”

Now, if you own a Tesla or are planning to buy one, note that Tesla has since moved to using proprietary cameras for its newer models, while Mobileye has also upgraded its cameras which no longer make it susceptible to these types of attacks, but the fact remains that there are still plenty of older models on the road today that could potentially be affected.

Sony Cancels Plans For PAX East Over Coronavirus Concerns

We already know that Sony will not be participating in E3 2020, but if you were hoping to see the company and hear announcements from them at other gaming events, you might be disappointed. This is because Sony has recently announced that they will not be participating at PAX East this year.

According to an update made on the PlayStation Blog, Sony writes, “UPDATE: Today, Sony Interactive Entertainment made the decision to cancel its participation at PAX East in Boston this year due to increasing concerns related to COVID-19 (also known as “novel coronavirus”). We felt this was the safest option as the situation is changing daily. We are disappointed to cancel our participation in this event, but the health and safety of our global workforce is our highest concern.”

Sony’s decision to skip the event doesn’t really come as a surprise. Ever since the virus outbreak, many have been advised to try and stay home where possible and to avoid confined areas with a lot of people, such as events. This has led to many companies cancelling their plans to attend events.

Take for example MWC 2020, where company after company pulled out which ultimately led to the event being cancelled this year. We imagine that Sony will most likely host its own event if they have anything they want to announce, but if you are planning to attend PAX East in Boston this year, know that Sony will not be there.

Sony Reportedly Shelved Plans For A New Mirrorless Camera Over DRAM Constraints

If you were hoping to see a new mirrorless camera from Sony, you might be disappointed because according to a report from Bloomberg, it seems that the company might have cancelled plans for a new mirrorless camera. The report claims that this is due to DRAM constraints in which Sony has decided to focus on the development of its upcoming PS5 console.

According to the report, “Sony has reportedly shelved plans to develop a new mirrorless camera this year owing to the constrained DRAM supply. The company is instead focusing on the launch of PS5, keeping the pricing factor under wraps.”

The report adds, “The company’s biggest headache is ensuring a reliable supply of DRAM and NAND flash memory, with both in high demand as smartphone makers gear up for fifth-generation devices, according to people familiar with Sony’s operations.” That being said, the report does not mention which potential mirrorless camera was cancelled.

Sony does have a pretty wide range of mirrorless cameras, ranging from more budget-friendly models to higher-end full frame models aimed at professionals, so we’ll just have to wait and see which model does not get refreshed in order to get a better idea of which camera the company might have cancelled.

There was also no mention if Sony has plans to potentially revisit the camera once supply is back at normal levels.
