Apple Could Design Its Own 5G Antenna For This Year’s iPhone

With Apple and Qualcomm having set aside their differences, it is widely expected that with this year’s iPhone, Apple could be turning to the use of Qualcomm’s modems for 5G connectivity. However, it seems that it won’t be all Qualcomm and that Apple could actually be contributing to the design process.

According to a report from Fast Company, it appears that Apple isn’t too pleased with Qualcomm’s QTM 525 mmWave antenna module. This is due to the design of the antenna that apparently doesn’t fit into Apple’s design. We’re not sure if it due to the actual design and that it doesn’t gel with the iPhone’s design language, or if it could be a size issue where it would not fit into the iPhone.

However, regardless of which it is, the report claims that Apple will instead of be attempting to design its own 5G antenna. That being said, Fast Company notes that Apple might not necessarily be very good at that, as evidenced with the iPhone 4 that resulted in poor reception if held in a wrong way.

They also point out that 5G antennas are a bit more tricky compared to 4G, and that the slightest imperfections could result in connectivity issues. The last thing Apple wants is for its first series of 5G iPhones to run into such issues.

Apple has been rumored to be working on its own 5G modems so with this report, we suppose it might be a good way for Apple to showcase a bit of what they might have been working on so far.

Google Could Be Planning An Apple News+ Competitor

Both Google and Apple currently offer a news aggregator service in the form of Google News and Apple News. However, back in 2019, Apple launched a premium version called Apple News+ in which it gave users access to a bunch of online newspapers and magazines for a price of $9.99 a month.

Now according to report from The Wall Street Journal, it appears that Google could be planning on something similar as well. The report claims that Google has been in talks with various publishers not just in the US, but also other regions like France and other parts of Europe, where they are attempting to reach some kind of licensing agreement.

Following the report, Richard Gingras, VP of news at Google issued a statement which seems to somewhat confirm it by saying, “We want to help people find quality journalism – it’s important to informed democracy and helps support a sustainable news industry. We care deeply about this and are talking with partners and looking at more ways to expand our ongoing work with publishers, building on programs like our Google News Initiative.”

It is unclear whether this final product could end up being similar to Apple News+ where customers pay a monthly subscription, or if Google will pay to license this content but make it freely accessible so that more users can read it, while leveraging its userbase to sell ads.

Apple is taking a huge gamble on the iPhone 5G

Qualcomm may be providing the 5G modem for the iPhone 5G later this year, but rumors suggest it could end up being connected to an antenna of Apple’s own design. The two companies settled their legal spat over technology licensing last year, paving the way for Apple to use Qualcomm’s 5G tech for its 2020 iPhone. However not all of … Continue reading
