Vertical Movies Are Coming Whether Anyone Actually Wants to Watch Them

Smartphone cameras have become so good that they’ve turned us all into amateur directors. But because social networks like Snapchat and Instagram encourage vertical videos, we don’t shoot the horizontal footage that makes sense for, say, a movie. That’s fine when an Instagram Story video is only 15 seconds long. But…

Samsung, LG Could Be Making Portable Monitors For Smartphones

The size of our smartphone displays have come a very long way since back in the day. However, we imagine that there probably still several instances where we wished we had a bigger screen. Now according to a report out of Korea, it seems that both Samsung and LG could be working on a solution.

This is said to come in the form of portable displays which would allow users to connect their smartphones to in the event they need a larger screen. This could be useful for photo or video editing, or if you needed to make a presentation on the go. Samsung’s display is rumored to be called the DeXbook and will sport a 14.1-inch display and a 10,000mAh battery.

LG’s answer will be the Cloud Top which will also feature a 14.1-inch display but will come with a smaller 5,000mAh battery. It should be noted that both Samsung and LG have offered up software features in the past (such as Samsung’s DeX Mode) that allows users to give their smartphones a desktop experience when connected to a display, so this seems like a natural evolution of that.

However, we’re not sure where the appeal lies in carrying around an external display versus a tablet, especially if the rumors are accurate about the display essentially being just a display and where users will still need to connect their own peripherals. Either way, take it with a grain of salt for now, but with MWC 2020 now being cancelled, it is possible that perhaps we could have learnt more about those devices then.

Future Apple Watches Could Come With User Replaceable Modules

One of the problems with a lot of devices is that sometimes you get reviews where depending on the person and their needs, some may like a product, and some might not. Some might like it a lot, but wish that there were certain features that could have been added or changed. Basically, it’s hard to make everyone happy.

This is where the concept of modular devices come in, and it seems that this could be something that Apple is exploring for the Apple Watch. This comes in the form of a recently-discovered patent where it suggests that maybe in the future, the Apple Watch could come with user replaceable modules that will let them customize their watch and its functions according to their needs.

The patent’s description reads, “The modular configurations allow a user to easily customize a watch with one or more functional modules to provide features that integrate with other operations of the body of the watch. The functional modules can be easily exchanged with each other to provide different components and functions at different times.”

For example, users who are more into workouts can add certain sensors and modules that are fitness specific. It could also be tailored to meet certain medical needs, such as glucose sensors and so on. So far, there have some some attempts at creating third-party accessories for the Apple Watch, although admittedly none of them have really taken off in a big way.

That being said, with this being a patent, there’s no telling if Apple actually plans on making it a reality, but it is a good idea and one that might be worth exploring.

IKEA Uses Google Maps To Give Discounts Based On How Far You’ve Had To Travel

Due to the fact that IKEA tends to combine their actual store with a warehouse, they need a lot of space. As such, most of the time if you wanted to go to an IKEA store, they might be located out of the city and sometimes far away. However, to encourage customers to make trips to their stores, IKEA has come up with a rather novel idea.

Over in Dubai, it seems that IKEA is testing out a discount system where based on how far you’ve had to travel, you will be given a discount accordingly. This will rely on the use of Google Maps and the Timeline feature, which records the routes you take everyday. Based on that, customers can then show IKEA staff members how far they’ve had to travel to the IKEA store, and based on that, they will be given a discount.

Based on the average Dubai salary, this works out to be around $28 for one hour of travel, meaning that it is possible that customers could essentially get themselves free products the further they’ve had to travel.

However, like we said, right now the feature seems to be only available in Dubai. It is unclear if IKEA has plans to eventually roll it out to other countries they operate in, or if it is simply exclusive to Dubai. It is, however, a rather novel idea and seems to be a good way to take advantage of Google Maps’ Timeline feature.
